Randy Shannon Reportedly Interviewing for Maryland's DC Job
"I'm told Randy Shannon is scheduled to interview for the vacant Maryland DC job this wk. More in my blog on ESPN later," tweets Bruce Feldman.
The rumors that Shannon was heading to Texas or UCLA were easy for 'Canes fans to digest, since the teams would only in the rarest of Bowl scheduling chances meet head-to-head and don't share much in the way of traditional recruiting territory. No one really begrudged the guy a chance at a new job as long as it didn't interfere with U business.
A job at another ACC school, though, is a different matter. True, Marlyand plays in the Atlantic Division, but it would still guarantee Shannon would be standing on the other sideline every few years (plus there's always the possibility of ACC championship meetings). Awkward.
Though, linebacker Jordan Futch came out and criticized Shannon in The Miami Herald recently, hinting that his bond with players may have not been that strong. Futch claimed Shannon's favoritism didn't create a very competitive atmosphere and that he'd sometimes banish players to the old woman's basketball team locker room. (Hey, whatever. The woman's b-ball team is the only team in Coral Gables making the U proud this season, so maybe that wasn't so bad.)
We wonder if more players would air some of their Shannon grievances should he take a job at a rival school.
Maryland and Miami will meet next year up in College Park. The teams met this year in Miami, and the 'Canes managed to pull out a 26-20 victory.
