University of Miami Beats Marlins

It's not exactly great news when your local college baseball team beats your local professional baseball team. That's just not how the world is supposed to work. Yet the Miami Hurricanes baseball team pulled out a surprising win against the Florida Marlins yesterday in an exhibition game. To add literal injury to insult, promising slugger Mike Stanton was hurt during the game.

Yes, true, the Marlins suited up only a ragtag group of backups and minor leaguers for the exhibition game at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter yesterday, while the Canes were more or less at full force. Yes, true, the Hurricanes are one of the more consistent and successful teams in the NCAA, while, except for those two championship seasons, the Marlins are notoriously mediocre at best. It doesn't make the outcome any less backward.

Especially considering the Marlins led 7-1 until the sixth. Then UM sophomore Michael Broad hit a grand slam to bring the Canes back into the game. The college team took it at the end 9-8.

The Marlins can move on past an exhibition loss, sure, but what's more concerning is the injury of buzzed-about slugger Mike Stanton. The 21-year-old strained his right quadricep while trying to round the bases and had to be taken off the field in a golf cart. The Miami Herald reports the team should know the seriousness of his condition within the next day or two.

As for the Canes, they definitely needed the morale boost. They're only 4-3 this season, with losses to minor teams such as Florida Atlantic and Appalachian State.

The Marlins suck. Now the taxpayers of Miami-Dade County have to pay over $3.5 Billion in taxes to pay for the Marlins new stadium.

Carlos Alvarez needs to be recalled. Vote him out. Early voting is open.
