Democratic Rep. Pushes for Amendment to Legalize Medical Marijuana in Florida

Categories: Politicks

With a recent poll showing 57 percent of Floridians favoring legalizing marijuana for medical purposes, state Rep. Jeff Clemens (D-Lake Worth) has introduced a resolution to put an amendment on the 2012 ballot that would do just that. Clemens claims that the move could bring in $5 to $12 million a year in tax revenue for Florida, and he ultimately has an eye towards complete decriminalization of marijuana. Too bad the bill probably won't go anywhere.

Clemen's resolution would put a medical marijuana measure on the ballot as a constitutional amendment in 2012. Sixty percent of voters would have to approve it to become law.

Marijuana would only be legal if prescribed to patients with debilitating conditions, though critics point to Florida's out-of-control pill mill problem in which powerful pain pills are freely prescribed by shady doctors.

Clemens retorts that while pain pill abuse kills up to six people a day in Florida, medical marijuana has never killed anyone. He also says that many recent laws passed to curb pill mills would also make sure that medical marijuana was not abused.

"We have a lot of people suffering here in the state of Florida, and I don't think we need to be telling them that prescription narcotics are the way to go when we have other more natural avenues for them," Clemens said.

The bill would not make insurance companies pay for the marijuana, and it could only be smoked in private.

Though a majority of Floridians seem open to the idea, it's unlikely that Clemen's resolution will make its way through the Republican-controlled legislator.

I have had many friends get hooked on Blues(oxys). I don't talk to most of them anymore. Makes me think, Why are pills so readily available That destroy peoples lives. When they did their trail, Did they hide the addictive value of these narcotics and opiates. I am Extremely close to becoming an Registered nurse. I believe Most narcotics Do way more harm, Then they help. My Mother has had 3 back surges a hole ripped in her spine from a botched spinal tap. She Almost died from Oxys(dr over prescribed her.) I let her hit my joint of dro one day 2 puffs.(she never smoked pot in her life).  She said she felt the best she has Since her Horrible Car Accident. Legalize Pot, Stop making people Chemically dependent on Narcotics and Opiates. Prescription abuse Is rampant, Along with A Lot Of Doctors that don't understand the HOLD these pills take on people. Stop making synthetic Heroin and Prescribing it as Medicine.  My 2 cents. Legalize cannibus,The benefit's Far out-Weigh the odds.

I am almost 18 and have just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and am well on my way to being diagnosed with venus insufficiency or vasculitis. It's crippling. I had to be pulled out of school because of it half way through my Junior year. I can barely walk most days, the pain is unbearable and causes nausea that keeps me from eating. Since all of this started I have lost 20lbs because I couldn't eat. I am 5'11" and 111lbs. They have started me on Tramadol but it barely makes life livable. I have no doubt I'd have to take morphine like my father in just a few years, and it barely helps him.

Scientific research suggests that Rheumatoid Arthritis, IBS, Fibromyalgia, and migraines (which I have daily) are caused by Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency which is only helped by cannabinoids from medical cannabis. As well as stopping cancers and causing them to self destruct cannabis is the best medicine for many of us living in Florida. Both of my parents have FM and I have seen what narcotics do to your body. They destroy it. I would have starved to death months ago if it wasn't for my brother giving me a little cannabis every week. However, I got caught and since then not only has my pain gotten worse as it has every month this year, but I have lost all of the weight I was gaining back.

Life is nearly unbearable. Myself, my parents, and many others like me would benefit like you cant imagine from medical cannabis. Most people don't think about the Human/Civil Rights part of the issue, but our government has become corrupted because of the drug money just like with alcohol prohibition, and our rights are being stolen from every one. Your tax dollars are leading to not only countless deaths every year in the U.S. because of the drug war, but are putting bullets in the heads of women and children in South of our border. The People's ignorance, indifference, and inaction causes people to suffer every day and even die from illnesses which could have been treated with medical Cannabis, and has corrupted our government, and caused countless of thousands of deaths.

Please, contact your representative! It is your duty to your fellow man, yourself, and your children to do what is right, and defend the right's of all. Thank you

I am now living in Florida and I am a medical marijuana patient from Colorado. I am off all narcotics for my chronic pain and have not had a migraine in 2 years since being put on medical marijuana. So it does work, I was in the emergency room at least 1 time per month getting shots of pain meds for my migraines and now I have not been to the hospital for 2 years. So you ask if it really does any good. HELL YES it does and has saved me thousands in medical bills.

Florida could really use medical marijuana. MMJ is already legal in 15 states and has been legal in California since 1996. MMJ should have been legalized in this state a long long time ago. We are the pill mill capital of the nation and MJ would grow great here. Wake up Florida and smell the green. Literally.

Let's not forget the "drug testing for employment" industry. The drug that stays in your system the longest is THC. Other, more serious drugs stay in your system only a few days. So, let's say you do Meth. You just have to abstain a few days for the test. Smoke a joint? A few months. Drug testing would not make money unless people smoked pot illegally. And those places that take your urine. They are so disgusting! Dirty, dirty, dirty. Now those places are total scams. Bet Rick Scott has money in some of those.

I find its rediculous that this hasnt been passed yet. In the history of marijuana being around, there hasnt been one crisis or dead from it versus these kids running around with pills that they can get from just about anywhere, dying everyday. I know tons of people who smoke marijuana and i also know some kids who have popped pills. Unfortunatly three of them who popped pills are not here today . Point proven.

The so-called "War On Drugs" isn't a war on drugs, it's a war on marijuana. And more specifically, it's not a war on marijuana, it's a war on stoners, on heads, on people that use reefer: YOU and ME - peaceful, job holding, tax paying, otherwise law abiding citizens.

Alcohol is GOOD and reefer is BAD, that's the message that's been pushed in America for the past several decades, and mainstream America has drunk the kool-aid.

It's time for change.

Sounds to me like most people are wanting it legalized...so why does it say in the story it probably wont go anywhere??...hmm sounds a bit like corrupt government (as usual)...its ridiculous that this country can give out pain pills left right and centre but they cannot legalize a plant, tobbaco is a plant and that is legalized. How can they justify the fact that all these people are dying from pain killers and alcohol and ciggerattes..yet nobody dies from smoking weed.. grow up will ya??..they are an absoloute joke if they turn this bill down, but ill smoke weed until the day i die i dont care if its legal or not they are not telling me how to live my life...in fact im gonna go smoke a bowl right now cause this has got me annoyed F U government.

This is not just about the right to use a safe effective natural drug or even the right to grow and/or sell a natural God given plant. This is also about demanding to be governed by the text of the supreme law of the land rather than continuing to be ruled over by unconstitutional tyrants doing the bidding of crooked corporations.

Jeff Clemens is certainly on the right track by introducing legislation allowing Floridians the right to use this God given natural medicine! Support him and all elected public servants that stand for freedom and Constitutional Government!

Oppressive unconstitutional nanny state marijuana prohibition is wasteful harmful and contrary to the rights of free people that this Nation was founded on. Because of the tyranny of marijuana prohibition a nonviolent citizen is arrested every 38 seconds in the USA and we waste 70 BILLION tax dollars every year. On top of that we are prohibited from access to over 50,000 superior, more environmentally friendly, GREEN job producing products that can be made from hemp/cannabis/marijuana.

This Country was founded on “natural” rights which the founders considered inalienable. Among these are the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. No law in the history of this Nation has been as harmful and wasteful as marijuana prohibition. Tens of millions of Americans have been arrested and over one TRILLION tax dollars have been wasted on the tyranny of marijuana prohibition. This unconstitutional wasteful harmful unnecessary prohibition has its roots in lies, greed and racism and that’s a well documented fact, not an opinion.

The Constitutional right to freedom of religion, free speech, a free press, to keep and bear arms, to be secure in your person, house, papers and effects against unreasonable search and seizure, to life, liberty and property, to be protected from having your property taken by the Government without due process of law and without just compensation, to confront the witnesses against you, to be protected from excessive bail, excessive fines, cruel and unusual punishment, to vote and others have been unjustly denied to tens of millions of Americans in the name of prohibition of the most useful and beneficial plant known to mankind. This is outrageous and must be ended by We The People.

Our state legislators and Governor Rick Scott are certainly moving in the right direction by looking into the medical benefits of marijuana, they are well documented and numerous for ailments ranging from very mild to severe. Marijuana has proven to be safe and effective for an almost innumerable list of ailments. Because of marijuana being SAFER than every Rx and over the counter medication on the market, as well as many foods we regularly consume, the potential benefits from this low cost, (virtually free if you grow your own) medicine is almost endless.

Criminalizing possession, use and sale of this SAFE natural plant is nothing short of a criminal act by tyrants seeking to oppress We The People and to promote the profits of crooked corporations that buy crooked politicians.

Our new Governor and our legislators would also be very wise to look into the GREEN job producing potential of marijuana/hemp/cannabis. In addition to its benefits as medicine and marijuana being as safe of a recreational drug as anyone could ever ask for, this amazing plant can also produce fuel, paper, fabric, building materials and over 50,000 superior and more environmentally friendly products than products in use today. The two articles and the free online book linked below go into much more detail about this truly amazing God given plant. There’s no doubt that after you read them, you will much better understand why marijuana prohibition has been so fiercely promoted by many crooked poison and pollution spewing corporations that fear competition from this natural GREEN plant.

No matter where you stand on the issue of legalizing marijuana everyone should read:

MARIJUANA AND HEMP THE UNTOLD STORY, Thomas J. Bouril,

WHY IS MARIJUANA ILLEGAL, Pete Guither

and the free online book:

THE EMPEROR WEARS NO CLOTHES, The Authoritative Historical Record of Cannabis and The Conspiracy Against Marijuana.

If you think marijuana prohibition has anything to do with the imaginary, false, fabricated, alleged harms from using marijuana as a recreational drug, YOU HAVE BEEN DUPED!

‘If people let the government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny.’ ~Thomas Jefferson.

Why should a natural medicine that’s far SAFER than aspirin ONLY be legal for those that have a serious ailment? Why should people be forced to use FDA approved poisons instead of a far safer more effective natural plant? Why should a plant that is SAFER than potatoes be regulated and taxed as if it was as dangerous as alcohol? Eating a few raw potatoes can give you a toxic reaction but marijuana is nontoxic. Why should people have their kids taken away from them when nontoxic marijuana is found in their home while far more harmful, even deadly substances are all over the house? Why should anyone be concerned about people using NONTOXIC marijuana when they have hundreds of far more dangerous and often deadly LEGAL substances under their kitchen sink, in their kitchen cabinets, in their medicine cabinets and in their garage? If adults can use those dangerous, even deadly substances safely, does any logical person really think they can't use NONTOXIC marijuana safely and keep their kids safe without Government being involved or a Rx from a Dr? Marijuana is one of the SAFEST and most beneficial plants known to mankind!

I am a 57 year old Florida resident. I’ve had chronic pain for 9 years(degenerative disc disease)(MRI verified) and on SSDI disbility. I take largeamounts of doctor prescribed narcotic pain medication (percocet). I wouldprefer to have the option to take Medical Marijuana instead of these deadly painpills. I am an advocate for the legalization of Florida Medical Marijuana. I pray that America stops criminalizing it's citizens over this matter. Study the real science (not the Refer Madness propaganda), marijuana is amazingly beneficial and is not going away. It's time to legalize, tax and regulate it. Come on Floirda voters... advocate and vote for legal Florida Medical Marijuana. I want a better medicine.

In the future, people will look back in disbelief. The war on marijuana is such an atrocity it will rank right behind slavery and the holocaust. The police use Nazi gestapo tactics to kick down your door and then send you to prison to become a slave of the state. All just for a plant in its natural form. What happened to liberty and justice for all? End the nonsense!

This will be devastating for police officers. who otherwise would not have a job. Busting people for possession of marijuana is a big source of income. legalizing medical Marijuana would cause allot less criminal activity and also sadly cause layoffs of cops.

just because Marijuana is safe and effective for many health problems does not mean it should be allowed. Incarcerating people is a major industry. Prison guards, infrastructure. all sorts of ways to profit. That is why it can't be legalized. As far as giving cops time to look for real criminals I don't think they really care one way or the other. they don't allow convicts to vote however they allow them to run for office.
