At Tom Crutchfield's Reptile Farm in Homestead, you can find deadly creatures such as Chinese bamboo vipers, Mojave rattlesnakes, black Pakistan cobras, and, apparently, right now, a man with a gun. Yes, according to reports, a man has barricaded himself inside a building on the property after shooting another man.

Reports are sparse, but the Miami-Dade Police Department's Special Response Team has arrived at 35000 SW 212nd Ave. to deal with the gunman. The site is listed online as the address of the Tom Crutchfield Reptile Farm, and CBSMiami says video shot from a helicopter shows the property is dotted with numerous cages and sheds.

The farm's Facebook page, which lists its address in Homestead, was updated Monday.

WSVN reports the incident was set off after an altercation between two men on the property. One man was lightly grazed by a bullet and is expected to recover. The other guy is now boarded up in a building on the property.

Someone has to do the trafficking. How would you expect to ever see it. Big deal. Not like he kills them and sells them for parts. I have bought some very nice animals from tom.

Tom could be a legend, but he has also trafficked in endangered species.

Tom is a legend in the reptile community.Me, and the rest of the community are so glad that he is ok and that nothing happened to him.

Wow, a Fijian Iguana...stop the presses, if it weren't for Tom we wouldn't have nearly all the exotic imports we do today, he's not just the "smuggling trafficker" people make him out to be...he's a passionate herper crucified on a daily basis by half wits who read an article or two and think they know a guy...

You don't understand the term "Darwinian Death," do you? When an animal is taken from the wild, it is effectively dead to its environment in that in will not be able to reproduce and therefore continue to populate it's native environment. Captive breeding that animal does nothing to change the situation.

Captive breeding an endangered species doesn't make it any less endangered. After all, the couple of animals you produce in captivity don't make up for the all of the progeny that would have resulted from the animal had you left it in its environment, as well as the progeny of its progeny, the progeny of those animals, and so on.....

How many species have been saved by captive breeding and reintroduction compared to how many species populations have been hurt by smuggling? It's a pretty lopsided comparison in that VERY few species have been saved by captive breeding. There really is NO rationale for smuggling, no matter how hard you try to justify it.
