Animal Rights Activists Want to "Recall" Animal Services Director Sara Pizano

Miami-Dade has reform fever, and the only cure is more recalls. Following Tuesdays political massacre of Carlos Alvarez and Natacha Seijas at the polls it's no surprise that other groups feel inspired and want to see more change. Now a group of animal rights activists is calling for the "recall" of the director for the Miami-Dade Animal Services, Dr. Sara Pizano. Of course, considering she's not an elected official, she can't really be recalled, but they want her out anyway.

Reads the press release:
After careful deliberation and conference calls with numerous organizations; at this time, The Miami Voice, The No Kill Nation, and the Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation are "Officially" requesting the resignation of Dr. Sara Pizano from her position as Director for the Miami Dade County Animal Services...effective immediately!
Notably, Vanessa Brito, the director of Miami Voice, the group that led the effort to recall Seijas, signed the letter.

Pizano, a veterinarian by trade, has served in the position since 2005 but has been hounded by animalloving activists for most of her tenure. Pizano took the job promising to reduce the number of animals that are killed in the shelter, but activists claim that more than 325 cats and dogs are killed a day on the taxpayer's dime. Complaints that euthanasia actually increased under Pizano's reign date as far back as to 2006, just six months after she took the job.

Activists are also against a method called the "heart stick" used to kill cats. A needle with fatal drugs is injected directly into the feline's heart. Pizano is publicly against the method, but animal activists say she hasn't taken enough steps to ensure it doesn't happen again in her department.

The numbers don't lie. Since Dr. Pizano's arrival, the number of animals adopted and transferred to rescue groups have gone up. (See here: www.miamidade.gov/animals/five... Yes, too many animal are killed at MDAS, but the rates are not any better at the public shelters in Broward or Palm Beach.

8 weeks old is not too young. They would have been weaned and eating food. Apparently she couldn't be bothered. Don't vets take an oath to help animals? Helping is not Killing. Miama Dade citizens should DEMAND her removal. She evidently doesn't care that she is being watched. I thought they were not accepting any animals. If I lived there I would not be quiet about her. Maybe she has "friends in high places" so she can do as she wants. Why isn't the Miami Dade newspapers doing more. I will not call her Dr. as she is an insult to the profession. MS DEATH has to go.

Just yesterday 9 kittens were brought the shelter they were about 8 weeks old. We (rescue group) were not even given a chance to get to the shelter. Sara Pizano killed them, according to her they were go young to be adopted. Well I believe a foster home would have been better... These are the types of thing that need to change at MDAS... These poor babies could have been saved we were willing and ready to take them. There was no need to murder them.. RIP little ones sorry we could not save you from this EVIL so called Director.

Hi , I just wanted to know if you rescue kittens also in Broward Animal Control.... A litter of kittens 4 weeks old I was trying to help were taken by them two days ago.....I know the shelter is full of baby kittens... Do you know if any rescue groups will save them from there? ( because they are too young to be vaccinated and are not ready for adoption in the shelter)thank you so muchCarol

I was there not too long ago and the place was incredibly filthy! That alone where people go to adopt is sad enough and its been known where the animals are its even worse with more filth! The facilities are not clean and with bacteria and mold the animals tend to get URI's and other sickness. When this happens the animals are immediately put down. So, why is that when you have a filthy facility and you cause the illness the innocent animals get sick and get put down?!?!? This is DISGUSTING!!! I also want to know why are the animals put down so soon?! They dont even get a chance to be exposed! Who determines which animals get put down and why!? If this is a shelter then the word euthanized shouldnt even exist! A shelter is a place of security! Another thing, the restrooms- HA! NASTY!! They aren't even in the building!! They are porta pottys that sit all day in the heat and stink and cause more bacteria and those are for the customers!!! Please explain this to me and the rest of us!

Nasty Story
Nasty Story

I was at the County Animal shelter on last Thursday, March 17 and the place was A MESS!!! IT smelled horrible (I let that one pass due to the fact that it is an animal shelter), the floor looked like it hadn't been cleaned in days, the staff was not polite at all, and get ready for the worst part... a lady that was sitting next to me was trying to adopt a dog, she took her two young children with her to the back area where the cages are and a huge rat ran across the floor and over her daughter's toe!!!! illllllll! nasty. There is no excuse for having a rat infestation. They can carry diseases to the animals. This lady doesn't have what it takes to run a Department.

I might have stood up for Dr. Pizano as doing the best she could with a thankless depressing and impossible job in this anti-animal-welfare county.. UNTIL she found out that horrors were going on in the MDAS Euthanasia room and instead of being HORRIFIED as most of the rest of us were...she was unapologetic. She did not even fire the creep who was committing the cruelty and her SOLUTION was astounding and apalling.... Dr. Pizano, in order to PUNISH those she feels oppose her reign also made sure to perpetuate the horrors for the animals by REMOVING THE CAMERA from the Euthanasia room. She showed her true colors right down to the core of her being with that unbelievable action.

If there were "Responsible" pet owners who spayed, neutered & microchipped their dogs there would be NO need for the killing of innocent animals. Backyard breeders need to be stopped also. A new shelter would help too. You can only do well at your "Job" if you have the right tools to work with. That shelter is not a "state of the art facility." People should work towards a solution & stop pointing fingers at the shelter & their workers!

Be part of the solution & not part of the problem!

Part of the solution is a director who gives a flying f__k!

Suthmalone

part of the solution is what you are stating and it will be implemented, however, as a Director for MDAS she has failed miserably. The "hidden" incidents or "mistakes" are overwhelming and constant. Part of the solution is getting a Director that is competent to get the job well done and not become a yes person to her superiors for the sake of keeping her job. As for backyard breeders, I too have 0 tolerance and that must be a priorty to undertake for the next Director.

New Times is giving fuel to the same 10-20 wackos who yelled and stomped their feet in front of the Govt Center a few weeks ago. They are the loud, fanatic, delusional minority attacking Dr. Pizano and its not fair. Do the math, look up the figures...MDAS is a veritable miracle worker with the amount of animals they take in and the work they do to get them adopted.

Nangwynn

Why all the euthanasia mistakes. Why the rampant disease. Why the empty cages and euthanasias still take place. Why the camera disconnect. Why are so many people be against Pizano. The people who want her out have nothng to gain by recalling her. They are the ones saving the animals. They are the ones spending all their money getting these animals well once they are pulled from MDAS. They are the ones finding them homes. While Pizano sits in a nice comfy airconditioned office making $145,000 a yr, they are working like crazy to save these animals. KingChiefGator, you are either a plant for MDAS or an idiot who has no idea what is going on. These so-called 10-20 wackos should be running the shelter, and the so-called director should leave!

I do not know of these wackos you are talking about however, I do know of THOR the dog they murdered yesterday. "MDAS is a veritable miracle worker with the amount of animals they take in and the work they do to get them adopted" I believe you are the WACKO!!!!!! If you took into account the numbers of rescue group and regular people who work together to pull animals from this HELL HOLE I think the numbers of adoption would speak for themselves. SAHME OF YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE VILE PLACE.

Let me tell you something- MDAS doesnt do crap to get these animals adopted!! Its rescue groups and crossposters that do ALL the work!! Open your eyes! Have you even been there?!

Pizano's claims that she was unaware her employee was performing cruel heart sticks on fully conscious cats is just not very believable. The guy was walking through doing it with total nonchalance. When an employee blew the whistle on this practice, Pizano FIRED the whistleblower but KEPT in her employ the guy who was doing the heartsticks. Oh, and she turned off the cameras. Her actions in the wake of that story breaking totally appear to contradict her claims. Otherwise, she'd fire the guy who did it, thank the woman who blew the whistle, and keep the cameras firmly in place.

She is a horrible monster who needs to go.

terri

At the shelter I work at, only the Vet could get the heart stick meds. It is against the law for an unlicensed vet to get these meds. So she had to know. Of course we would never do this. We only euthanize very sick, old with age related illness such as severe arthiritis, or vicious dogs. Even then we hold them and soothe them til they fall asleep.

Soccer211babe
Soccer211babe

So, with all that she has done why isnt she in jail with animal cruelty!?!?!?!?!?!?!

terri
terri

Yeah sure. Where did the employees get the drugs for the "Heart Stick"? Only a vet can dispense this drug, and most would not agree in this procedure. Who is she kidding. Strange how so many are blind at what is going on under their noses.

It seems like she's apathetic at best. I'm not in Florida but if I were I think I'd be joining in calling for her resignation. 325 plus animals a day killed on the taxpayer's dime? That sure as hell isn't how I would want my tax dollars spent!

I have researched what Animal Services was like before her and it was a hot mess. Has it gotten better? To a large degree, yes. Is it where it should be? Hell no! She can be be faulted with perhaps some blame; however, you cannot make miracles happen with a crappy budget.

Direct your anger towards the commission. Fight for funding for spay/neuter services from the County Commission. Apply pressure to fast track the new shelter. Fight for a mandatory spay/neuter ordinance. Fight for an ordinance requiring a breeder's license be listed if placing an ad for a pet for sale.

As politicians scramble to throw their hat in the ring for the county's mayoral election, extract promises for supporting Animal Services when it comes to crafting their annual budget.

If Pizano resigns or gets the boot, the next guy will not be able to work miracles with the budget they have in place.

"As politicians scramble"... THAT is music to my ears, as a born and raised Miami Native! I have watched this County go down the tubes with a seemingly accepted culture of animal neglect (especially with so many starved horses and goats), backyard breeding, and the outright cruelty of Santaria. I was a child growing up in this County bent on saving every kitty and dog that I came across. In all my years from elementary to high school I had to rescue one stray juvenile cat and one mama cat ready to have kittens at a fish house. We found a Cocker puppy dying on the side of the road, and that was extremely traumatic for my family. I am sure there were feral cats on Miami Beach that the retired folk fed. That was before it became South Beach, btw. But NONE in Greynolds Park or at Haulover or any of the parks we went to all the time back then! Now, it is a huge problem! For the last few decades I have seen stray dogs while driving (always some dead ones too) every single day. I try to rescue those I can and those I cannot, I leave food for the dog and I leave depressed!

WHAT HAS CHANGED in this County since I was a young person??? YOU TELL ME!

I have worked at a shelter in the North for over 15yrs. We have a budget also, and must account for all the spending. When we are low on food, we call up animal food stores and they are more than happy to give us their ripped or damaged bags of food., and get a tax deduction A call to the local newspaper asking for donations brings hugh results. We have volunteers who conduct fundraisers. There are plenty of ways to help shelters to properly care for the animals in their care.
