Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather -- a University of Miami star drafted in the first round in 2007 -- is under investigation in the shooting of two men at a house party in central Florida last week, according to a lawyer representing the victims.

Meriweather allegedly pulled a gun at a party in Apopka on Feb. 27 and fired a shot that grazed one victim's head and hit another man in the cheek, says John Morgan, a lawyer representing the victims.

The lawyer's claims were first reported by Dan Sileo, a UM alum with a radio show in Tampa.

Police have yet to file any charges in the shooting, but Morgan tells Deadspin that the shooting victims attended Apopka High School with Meriweather.

The men scuffled at the Blue Jeans Lounge earlier in the night after one of Meriweather's friends roughed up a woman, Morgan says, and then fought again at a house party. That's when Meriweather allegedly drew a gun and fired, he says.

But Morgan backtracked on those claims this morning in an interview with the Boston Globe.

"I have a lot of doubt about that," Morgan told the paper. "That's what these fellas told me, but I don't assume that to be true at all. I assume nothing to be true until we get an investigation completed ... the cops have had this case for two weeks."

At UM, Meriweather was twice an All-American and left with a record 293 tackles at defensive back. The Patriots took him 24th overall in 2007, and he made the Pro Bowl in 2009.

His time in Coral Gables wasn't free of controversy, though. Meriweather fired several shots in 2006 at an attacker who shot his teammate Willie Cooper; police rule he fired the gun in self-defense.

And in the infamous UM brawl with FIU, Meriweather was at the heart of the melee.
