A City of Miami Police officer has shot and wounded a suspect in Little Havana. Ricardo Orta Jr., a 19-year-old, is in stable condition this morning at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The shooting happened outside a dollar store in the strip mall near NW 14th Avenue and West Flagler Street around 6 p.m. yesterday after an officer responded to calls about an argument there.

Officer Marc Redondo, a 27-year-old with four years on the force, responded to a call at the store at 6:10 last night, says Officer Kenia Reyes, a spokeswoman for the department.

Redondo and Orta then got into a confrontation that led to the shooting, but Reyes had no further information about what sparked the gunfire.

Orta had several pending criminal cases, according to Riptide's records search. He was charged last month with felony cocaine possession and two misdemeanor counts of resisting an officer without violence and carrying a concealed firearm.

He also has two open felony cases from 2009, for burglary and criminal mischief.

Update 2: Orta has been arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to a police report. Orta got into a fight with two men outside the dollar store, the report says, and then pulled a handgun and pointed it at both men.

After they ran for their lives, Orta fled. Moments later, Redondo confronted the suspect and shot him.
