Nicole Sandler, Local Liberal Radio Host, Arrested at Rep. Allen West's Town Hall

Categories: Politicks

Remember that time a superideological politician held a town hall and a lot of people from the other end of the political spectrum showed up and yelled not such nice things at him and he decided to completely change his political outlook overnight and everything worked out in the end? Oh right, it never happened! That doesn't stop people from trying to make it happen all the time, though.

Last night, at a town hall in Fort Lauderdale held by controversial, Tea Party-connected congressman Allen West, several activists showed up with their heckling game in tow. Nicole Sandler, a former host of a liberal politics show on WINZ, was arrested.

In this video from Shark-Tank.net, West is seen complaining about being called misogynist and whatnot when several hecklers begin shouting unintelligible things at him. The congressman replies, "You're not going to intimidate me," which is greeted with applause from his supporters.

Around the 3:34 mark, Nicole Sandler is shown being escorted out. The video then shows Sandler outside the main auditorium. She identifies herself by name, and when police try to remove her from the building, she refuses and says she's talking to the media.

An officer touches Sandler, and she screams, "Get your hand off of me!" The officer then places Sandler under arrest, to which she replies, "Ah-ha-ha. Oh my God. I have witnesses here, right?" Sandler was charged with "trespassing after warning."

Hecklers were apparently angry that West would not answer questions directly from audience members at the town hall and would reply to only previously submitted written questions.

Sandler wanted to press West about his support of Rep. Paul Ryan's budget, which included drastic cuts for Medicare.

West wouldn't respond, which led to more screaming from Sandler and eventually to her being escorted out of the auditorium.

Sandler used to host a progressive talk show on WINZ and has a show on the left-leaning Air America radio network. Sandler was let go after the station switched to its current sports talk format, but she still hosts a show online.

I WONDER IF THESE "WANNABE" COPS WEREN'T PAID OFF TO ARREST "ANY or ALL WHO QUESTIONS.'' HANG IN THERE NICOLE !

Incredibaly well written article. I appriciate your writing skill, you have done a good work. Your article "Nicole Sandler, Local Liberal Radio Host, Arrested at Rep. Allen West's Town Hall" is one of the useful article on subeject. Thanks for your hardwork.

questions r good

Even those in favor of Allen West should be interested in his views on Medicare and what will happen to the elderly (you or grandma, grandpa, mom, dad, brother, sister) seeking insurance if we go to a voucher system. What for-profit insurance company will cover the old and disabled? We should not be afraid to ask the question.... What are his views? Anybody?

Shame on you Rep West for not asking the bouncers to stop & back off & to let Ms Sandler ask her question!! A REAL representative of the people would have done that!! All you had to do was tell the bouncers, "It's okay, let the lady ask her question" but no, you couldn't do it.

It all just goes back to something very basic: If you're so sure of your position and so confident you have such a great program with the Ryan plan as you pretend it to be, it should have been an easy task for you to field her question and anyone else's questions.

Nicole -- hats off to you. The ones who should be in jail are the thugs that are trying to gut Medicare so they can give tax breaks to billionaires. Hopefully episodes like this will expose the hatred TeaPublicans have for America, and folks will vote these creeps out of office.

Many liberals are comparing the town hall disruptions yesterday as legitimate discourse similar to the discourse two years ago by conservatives. This couldn't be further from the truth. First, the conservative reaction to the power grab by Obama was a true grass root uprising that was not pre-planned and circulated through Facebook and Twitter. With the left, follow the tweets and you find core agitators and party officials. Further, think about how many tea party protesters were led away in handcuffs? ZERO. I listened to former Air America host Nicole Sheldon yesterday evening continue to shout and disrupt until she was physically removed from the venue and arrested. There's a large difference between spontaneous reaction and carefully orchestrated malfeasance.

Congressman Allen West had the foresight to not allow political operatives to sabotage his town hall meeting. Over 300 questions were written by attendees and independent reviewers selected the actual questions to be asked. None were screened, and Congressional staff plans to follow-up with people who didn't have their questioned answered.

Political operatives from the left failed in their mission.

Allen West is a true American patriot. Go West!

thanks Nicole, for your voice and courage to speak up! I am sorry that you were treated this way. Shame on Rep. West for invoking those who have stood up before him in the fight for justice at the same time not allowing dissent and debate from his constituents. He is a broken soul.

I'm noticing something odd here. West takes a certain amount of heckling. He details some harassment he's received. OK, fine. But then he "gets military". He talks about his "responsibility" to have his honor, his character, and his integrity every day. Then he refers to all the members of his family, and himself, with "we all gave our lives so you can have your freedoms and liberties.” He struts, he looks commanding. He keeps a stony face and mentions that he will not be intimidated. He has his flag pin and a medal of some sort. Here’s where I have a problem:

1.Being a member of Congress is NOT a military position, and the one job doesn’t automatically qualify someone for the other. Nor is it necessary.2. His “responsibility" is not about HIS having those 3 things every day, it's about LISTENING TO, and WORKING FOR, his constituents. You know: OTHER people. 3. He obviously did NOT give his life.4. He mentions that some people don’t want to face the truth, which sounds a lot like, “You can’t HANDLE the truth!” He never mentions what that truth is.

He is cheered for this patriotic-sounding speech, but still won’t answer direct questions from the audience, which would at least be a mark of bravery in the face of opposition. I am not impressed by people who trot out their service to their country as proof of their morals and trustworthiness in every other matter. I would not have guessed that he was a Congressional Representative hired (elected) by the people in his district. This guy is all about himself. Just snap to attention and say, "Yes, SIR!"

As Samuel Johnson said, “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.”

OBL won. In the last decade, we have witnessed the erosion of civil rights, espec. those relating to free speech issues. A 'town hall' suggests it is an open forum, with the opportunity to speak openly, even critically with a elected representative. What this was is actually a public representative, holding a 'public meeting' in a private venue ( curiously, not even in his own district) complete with private 'security guards' acting in concert with local police.Hearing Sandlers description of her arrest and subsequent detainment, it appears the climate in Florida really sucks for anyone who isn't a church attending sheep. When a church becomes so active promoting the interests of a specific political agenda or mindset that they in fact become toadies to the cause, it reinforces my personal belief that all churches should be stripped of tax exempt status. Why should a political organization ride free of the responsibilities of paying for the emergency and civil services a city/county/state offers? If this event were held at a labor unions hall, I am sure there would have been much more opportunity to speak, even critically.Another reason Florida, and most of the South, should be forcefully kicked out of the Union. Who needs this inbred yahoo stuff?

4-26-11Nicole Sandler arrested at Alan West event at a right-wing Evangelical Mega Church. After posing a legitimate question to so-called Representative Alan West, MS Sandler was booed, shouted down, held by private security, arrested, jailed for over 16 hours, locked in a bed closet with no ventilation and maced. Sandler supporters posted the $25.00 bond… (ahhh, yea)West was BSing the congregation about how he served his nation so all Americans can be free… (lol) Of course the news media is trying to make Nicole Sandler look like a trouble maker without ever mentioning the RATIONAL question she asked. “…please give me the names of the insurance companies who will insure a 75 year old American with high blood pressure for a voucher?” I want to welcome Nicole Sandler to the world of serious political activism and community organizing. Until one TESTS the system you’d never believe these kind of human rights violations were possible in the USA! Fighting against this Republican degeneracy is the greatest rush I ever experienced.cyberbitchslap2.blogspot.com

Also, after the events on this video, Ms. Sandler claims she was mistreated in prison, and if what she describes about it is true, the police department will have some serious problems. Of course, that assumes police departments are clean, and are held accountable for their own wrongdoing. That is what we all want to believe, and I think it's pretty true most of the time, but certainly not always.

Laura Cutler
Laura Cutler

The press should not be calling this event a "town hall meeting," given that the representative was not addressing constituents' questions, unless they happened to be chosen by his staff from among those written out and submitted. Of course, they would not choose any questions that the Congressman might sound bad answering. If he wants to give a speech, and entertain only questions that feed into his preferred talking points, that is some sort of event, but not what a town hall meeting is supposed to be. There has to be an opportunity for all (or as many as possible) constituent views, concerns and questions to be addressed, even when the issues are complex or controversial.

I hope that citizens will try to refrain from this shouting and anger in these events; that stuff looked bad when it was fomented by secretive, big-money organizations using 'Tea Party' pawns, working to defeat President Obama's healthcare system proposals, and it looks bad in scenes like this. But representatives not giving their constituents a chance to calmly ask questions and follow up after an answer, ends up pushing people to frustration and shouting. When it's made clear to you that your legitimate concerns will NOT be addressed, that undemocratic model pushes folks to this kind of exasperation. I don't know how long Mr. West had been speaking before this video starts, which is a relevant point. It looks from the video as if he was talking about threats he had received (about which I don't blame him for being upset, if it's true). That is an interesting, concerning problem, but not one that should take up very much time (if any) in a town hall meeting. On the video (and probably for some time before, though we can't tell from this segment), he had been speaking without these interruptions, which is unlike the scenes from the healthcare meetings, where Congresspeople could not get a word out without immediate shouting.

One important point: Although this video inevitably calls to mind various totalitarian regimes of the past and present, I feel it's a bad course, to even bring up things like "Nazi," "brownshirts," and so on. There are better ways to express the concept of inappropriate, undemocratic actions by police and others, against citizens being and talking in a forum that is supposed to be FOR them and their concerns.

Artemis Eneldo
Artemis Eneldo

He was not even answering the prepared questions, he was just reciting talking points. For example, he does not explain how elders will get health care w/o Medicare as we know it today. Vouchers is not an answer. People over 50 cannot buy affordable private insurance now, and Republicans think somehow people 65 and older will be albe to buy? No. They just want elders who are not ultra-wealthy to die. And that is why they can't actually answer questions b/c the actual answers are not what people want to hear.

The tools of the Republican-Teaparty: hate mongering, fear mongering and scapegoatism. A constuient is arrested for asking a question at a Republican-Teaparty "town hall meeting." Of course, she was escorted out of the building by thugs hired by West, the police (shilling for a Teapartier, who would destroy their union.) They are showing us who they are! When we had a so-called debate over healthcare in this country, and the Koch brothers shipped in their supporters to Democratic Town hall meetings- where there were constant disruptions and shouting down representatives...where were all the arrests? corporatism merging with a dictatorship is fascism.

You have it entirely backwards. The townhall disruptions of 2 yrs ago were funded by the Koch brothers: remember the big expensive fancy buses? That was not "grassroots" and one would have to be quite loony to believe it was. Obama was not making a "power grab", only trying to give insurance companies some real competition. After all, it is real competition that will (hopefully) bring healthcare costs down.

Tea baggers weren't led away in handcuffs because the representatives they heckled understood they were at a town hall meeting and citizens have a right to speak at town hall meetings. Apparently West doesn't agree with the concept of "town hall meetings", democracy, & the like. God, remember all the talk back then re "death panels"? Well, MG, what do you think Ryan's budget & plans for medicare ARE? It's real simple: if you are elderly and can't pay, can't get insurance, and don't have rich adult children capable of going into the poorhouse FOR YOU, YOU WILL DIE sooner than you would have otherwise. It's that simple.

Everyone in that audience that shouted at Ms. Sandler and applauded West, should be ashamed of themselves. Completely & totally!!! She had every right to voice her concerns and ask questions. So what if you don't happen to agree with her?? She STILL had a right to ask questions and voice HER concerns to her elected representative. That West didn't stick up for her rights himself I find that equally appalling, if not moreso.

In typical Lib fashion, suzeo detracts from the real issue (Nicole) and instead tries to demonize West...

Suzeo says"He is cheered for this patriotic-sounding speech, but still won’t answer direct questions from the audience, which would at least be a mark of bravery in the face of opposition."----------------------------------------------Articles says:"several hecklers begin shouting unintelligible things at him."

Suzeo - you do know the 'purpose' of hecklers right?

So suzeo, what questions should he have been answering??

Nicole was there to 'disrupt', Intimidate, and just act with no class.. nothing more....it is quite obvious and anyone here with common sense can see that [If they wanted to]. Nicole and her ilk are very Rude.

Nicole also said 'but I thought' it was a back and forth with questions - huh? Obviously not. She and her ilk were the [only ones] being [rude] and shouting out from the audience. No one else was the audience were all telling [her] and [her ilk] to shut up!

Suzeo you are a typical Lib - Let's not acknowledge how Nicole and her ilk were there to do exactly what they did - Disrupt, Intimidate.

As for all the other stuff you wrote - What's your point?

Your small brain does understand that when you spout off like you just did, you only prove the point that you and others like you are nothing but a waste of skin? If you don’t like living in a society where people are free to question the actions of their elected officials, then feel free to move to China, or any number of other countries with governments which are more in line with your lunacy and stop polluting this great country with your presence.

It is rarely true anymore. On March 29, 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5 to 4 decision, overturned a $14 million award in Connick v. Thompson. A jury awarded John Thompson, who spent 18 years in prison (14 of those years in isolation on death row) because prosecutors intentionally withheld evidence that proved his innocence. The legal rationale for the Court’s opinion is a technical one; the facts of Thompson’s false imprisonment are not in question. It is known that prosecutors in the office of Orleans Parish District Attorney, Harry Connick Sr. (yep, the musician’s dad) intentionally withheld evidence that would have proven Mr. Thompson’s innocence. It is known that there was a history of withholding evidence by prosecutors in that office. It is known that D.A. Connick encouraged a win-at-any-cost attitude from his Assistant D.A.s, and it is known that Connick had a reputation for questionable ethics.

Justice Clarence Thomas, delivering the opinion of the Court, goes to great pains to isolate the type of evidence (lab results of a blood analysis) illegally withheld in this case from other types of evidence illegally withheld in other cases, and concludes that since evidence of this type hadn’t gone missing before, there was no pattern of misconduct. It appears that the court performed these legal gymnastics in order to issue a ruling that provides prosecutors immunity from any accountability for violating law, their own ethical standards, and the civil rights of citizens.

Those who don't remember history are doomed to repeat it... (or something like that :)

I disagree. While I respect the sentiments and the desire for civil conversation behind your call for restraint where mention of the Nazi's is concerned, I think the right wingers, always adept at controlling message, have set us up on this one.

It was O'Reily and Beck who began using the comparison on everything from environmentalists to union workers and they kept it up until the left cried foul, thereby neutralizing the left's ability to make the accurate comparison of Nazi propaganda tactics to the repub messaging machine. I think they planned that one out.

The parallels between the neo-cons, their apparent goals, their tactics, lack of respect for opposing viewpoint, manipulation of the media to make what is false into what is commonly accepted as true, the demonizing of all opponents, the social engineering as a method of dividing and distracting the people, the use of military to support business, the false flag exploitation... to the Nazis is undeniable. Any serious historian has already determined that fascism is well established here already.

I see no reason to deny or avoid the obvious truth.

Oops--I did not mean to click on the "like" button, although I think it's true that Rep. West and others (not all Republicans) want to avoid dealing with the casualties of their legislative actions. Can't "like" profanity in discussions, however. Just not a good thing, in my opinion.

How can one "unlike," anyway? Possible?

I am sorry you do not have a large enough vocabulary to express yourself without profanity. I would like to know what part of the country is broke do you and others like you not get? We have over half the population on some sort of "program" and the rest of us trying to pay for it and eek out a living for ourselves. If a family runs over their budget month after month they end up bankrupt, well that can happen here too. The issue is the spending on non-essential items, the money has to come from some where. And printing money only makes it worse for the up and coming generations. I would like my children to have a shot at the America we grew up in, wouldn't you? Have a nice day and God Bless.

lol this is a far cry from broward new times, where most of the writers curse all they want along with the commenters...

i don't get that we are in three wars abroad (and i usually count mexico and make it four) but are cutting benefits to the police and public services here.

i don't get that why HAVE to keep cutting corporate income tax even as most major corporations pay no taxes already and continue to offshore all their jobs even as they make all their profit here.

i don't get that the thousands of known financial criminals that got us in this mess and stole trillions, and they are continuing the looting with both of our parties' blessings, and in the meantime our "representatives" pretend that defunding NPR and HUD and medicare are what's really going to stop our money problems as the fed and treasury continue years of monetary policy that solely benefits the ultra-rich.

how's those gas prices working out for you by the way? congress has the ability to end oil subsides and criminalize oil speculation. but they're not going to.

we're not talking about cutting down on people on the dole. we're talking about the wealthiest nation on earth abandoning its sick and elderly in order to serve the rich while countries with a small fraction of our GDP have universal health care.

allen west is not trying to solve these problems. virtually no one in government is.
