RIP, Jim Mandich, a Miami Dolphin Till The End

The Mad Dog of South Florida Radio
The Mad Dog bled aqua and orange until his last breath. Former Miami Dolphins tight end and local sports radio personality Jim Mandich died Tuesday evening after months of battling cancer. For anyone who has rooted for the hometown NFL franchise, Mandich ranks right up there with Dan Marino and Don Shula. He was always a Miami guy.

After his playing days were over, he landed his first radio gig in 1983 on WIOD, where he met radio legend Neil Rogers, who turned Mandich's trademark exuberant "alrrriight" into a regular sound bite that followed the pair to 560 WQAM.

Mandich had been the Dolphins' color commentator alongside former teammates Jimmy Cefalo and Joe Rose since 2007. Below is the trio's jubliliant reaction when the Dolphins avoided becoming the first NFL team to lose every game by beating the Baltimore Ravens:

I'm old enough to have watched Jim in action. Honestly, I don't think he ever dropped a ball. He set up Jim Kiick's TD in SB7, Hie best game was at Buffalo in '73, I loved this guy's loyaty. God's speed sweet Jim.

My husband and I are big Dolphin fans. I invited Jim to my husband's retirement show that was very Dolphin oriented. He didn't return my email until it was too late. I got a personal call from his staff and a letter from JIm apologizing for missing it. He enclosed a $100 gift certificate to his restaurant in the Keys. He is a class act that will be sorely missed by the Miami community. My husband listened to his show everyday until he went off the air. If more people aspired to be like Jim, the world would be a better place. May you rest in peace, Jim and may your family find comfort with the memories of the wonderful man you were your whole life.

The MAD DOG was a true gentleman and a fixture in this community. I became a fan from his "Ask Mad Dog" segment days on channel 10 sports several years ago. Jim Mandich - you sir, will be missed.

A Champ! Marino has nothing on Mandich. What a guy.Glad I got to experience him in my lifetime... He took a game that was marginal to me as a child, at best, and turned it into one of the loves of my life. I'll miss you Jim.
