Tallahassee Is America's Pot-Smoking Capital, Miami Isn't Even On the List

Tallahassee is not only the political capital of Florida, but also apparently the pot-smoking capital of America. Surprisingly, Miami, most often associated with drugs, doesn't even make the Daily Beast's list of Mary Jane-loving cities. Then again, maybe it's not much of a surprise that college towns dominate the rankings.

The Daily Beast took several factors into account. The number of residents who regularly use marijuana was obviously weighted most heavily, but statistics involving marijuana-related arrests, "pot culture," and an active chapter of National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws were also taken into consideration.

Tallahassee came in number one overall, with 10.4 percent of residents reporting regular use. True, Tally is home to a bunch of government suits, but the town of only 168,909 also has tons of college kids. FSU has an enrollment of nearly 41,000. FAMU adds another 13,000 students, and Tallahassee Community College has an enrollment of almost 18,000. It's not easy to imagine where the bulk of that 10.4 percent comes from.

Gainesville is the next Florida city on the list, coming in at 31. Not a surprise considering the town is home to the University of Florida.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the inclusion of Jacksonville at number 40. Of all of Florida's large cities, it's by far the most politically conservative, and while it is home to the University of North Florida, the school's enrollment of about 16,500 is a small portion of the town's 800,000-plus population. Then again, when you live in Jacksonville, you have to find a way to get through the day somehow.

Miami didn't even make the list.

"It's not easy to imagine where the bulk of that 10.4 percent comes from"? Don't you mean that it's not difficult to imagine where the bulk of that 10.4 percent comes from? Were you stoned when you wrote that?

It's true. A lot of people here in Tally smoke pot. Maybe because its a college town? FSU, FAMU, TCC all ring a bell?

Random polling & arrest-reports? This article smells like bullshit.

"It's not easy to imagine where the bulk of that 10.4 percent comes from." Why isn't it easy to imagine? Was marijuana usage involved in writing this article?

Yeah, just take out the word "not." I was surprised that the number was so low (10.4), as I know a rather diverse group of people and a lot of them smoke, but I realized that it said "regular use," which they've defined as the "past month," so "semi-regular," "occasional" or "rare" use inclusion would dramatically bump up the number.
