A 33-year-old woman was shot in the back last night at her home in Miramar, Florida, and police believe that her 3-year-old son was the gunman. The boy might have been playing with the gun when it accidentally fired and sent a bullet through his mother.

The incident occurred at an apartment complex at 8520 Sherman Cir. N. The toddler, the mother, and a male witness were the only individuals inside the apartment, and the male called 911 after the shooting. It's unknown what the man's relation to the other two is at this time.

The boy was seen playing with police officers after the shooting, and they aren't sure he realizes what happened.

"I'm not an expert as to what and I can't speculate as to what he may be going through, psychologically speaking, but at least it appears that he is not aware of exactly what it was that happened," Miramar Police spokeswoman Tania Rues tells WSVN.

The Department of Children and Families is trying to locate family members who can take custody of the child.
