Five Reasons Carlos Gimenez Is The Wrong Man For The Job

carlos gimenez3.jpg
This guy will make you fall asleep.
Today is the day Miami-Dade voters who did not cast their ballots via absentee or during early voting days get their turn. With that said, we can't have y'all voting for former county Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, who is playing spoiler to Luther Campbell's chances to make the run-off against Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina. Don't let Gimenez siphon votes away from Uncle Luke, the real reform candidate. Here is why:

1. The Miami Herald's endorsement. Do you really want to go with the guy picked by an editorial board with a bad habit of selecting deadbeats? Not that Gimenez is one, but let's get real, any candidate who get's the nod from the Herald is doomed.

2. He does not support the strong mayor government. Gimenez favors a system in which the mayor has the power to hire and fire a professional manager to run the day-to-day operations of local government, but that's it. If Gimenez had his way, the mayor wouldn't be able to hire and fire anyone else working at county hall. That's the kind of government that you see in the city of Miami, where we have Mayor Tomas Regalado handing over the managerial reigns to his former chief-of-staff. And we've already seen what a mess former County Manager George Burgess left us in. Gimenez doesn't want the buck to stop with him, but rather someone he can blame things on when the shit hits the fan.

3. He takes contributions from folks doing business at the county. His campaign finance report is dominated by special interests who have a stake in Miami-Dade, whether it is companies vying for county contracts or developers seeking zoning approvals. He raised $12,050 from the law firm Bilzen Sumberg, which lobbies on behalf of dozens of clients with business pending at County Hall. He has accepted donations from firms that have a contract to provide transit services for the elderly and the handicapped.

4. He supports the port tunnel. While he may have won support from environmentalists for stating he would hold the line on the urban development boundary, Gimenez is one of the most vocal boosters for a billion dollar boondoggle in the making. Not only that, the port tunnel project could end up damaging Biscayne Bay with years of construction. Billed as the only way to funnel truck traffic into the Port of Miami away from downtown Miami, the port tunnel is going to create gridlock on the MacArthur Causeway.

5. He is a human sleeping pill. The man is boring. The only reason Gimenez is appealing to voters is because he looks like a shining white knight when you put him next to Julio Robaina. But he really hasn't offered any bold plans for making Miami-Dade a better place to live.

6. He is being endorsed by Raul Martinez.

7. He is being endorsed by Joe Garcia.

I think those are already two very good reasons to NOT vote for Gimenez.

Here comes Lil' Frankie and the Strouses again pretending to care for the city, while propping up their no-chance joke candidate and dismissing the only other candidate that can stand to Hurricane Robaina, with such compelling arguments as "he's boring" and "endorsed by the real paper".

Hope you enjoy Mayor Robaina, Frankie. He'll certainly give you plenty to write about, which may have been your intention all along.

Way off the mark..

1. Herald endorsement, really, that is a reason not to vote for someone.. Why don't you focus on the man's record? Hmmm.

2. Speaking of record, what you are talking about is the executive mayor form of government. Gimenez has been on the record many times saying that form DOES NOT WORK. He advocated for manager/commission form, or Strong Mayor. What he said about Strong Mayor is that it can be great if you have a capable and honest person, but a total mess if you have an incompetent (see Carlos Alvarez) and/or dishonest (see Julio Robaina) Mayor.

3. Accepting money from contributors is one thing, but, point to one issue that he voted for a contributor that was adverse to the interests of the taxpayer.. Point out how many times he has voted against supporters. That is the real test, but, requires homework.

4. The port tunnel along with the deep dredge is going to generate 30,000 permanent jobs! Most of the money comes from Tallahassee. He was the most ardent critic against the Marlins Stadium, a real waste of taxpayer money with absolutely no benefit.

5. Who cares if he is boring, really?? He is honest, showed what he can do to turn a government around (left City with 142 million in reserves, and the lowest tax rate in 50 years). That is exactly what we need right now! No freaken drama, just good responsible accountable government!!!

I voted for Carlos Gimenez. Carlos opposed the taxpayer giveaway to the Marlins.

I support Gimenez because the Latin Builders Assoc is endorsing Robaina and Robaina is a liar.

Let's focus on the reasons why to vote for the candidates. I voted # 25 Julio Robaina because: he has a proven record of accountability and fiscal discipline, plans to eliminate wasteful spending and supports the Charter Reform to prohibit outside income for mayor and commissioners. Success formula!

Lol...and it's really sweet what you guys are doing but don't you think it affects your credibility a lil when you're supporting Uncle Luke? I mean, he substitutes his non-existent government experience (and his self proclamation to the "Hip-Hop" party doesn't count)  with his entrepreneurial experience, yet he filed for bankruptcy. I'm sure he's come a long way from his adult entertainment business aka freak shows. And besides making the f-bomb, p-bomb, b-bomb part of the daily discourse, what else has he done?

Maybe one day he will make a great politician...but for now, baby steps my brotha.

Plus Eye on Miami and all those other blogs you you claim as credible resources support Gimenez...

Hello? Robaina will eliminate wasteful spending? Did you not read about the city having to rehire all the firefighters Hialeah (robaina) laid off because paying overtime to make up for the reduction proved to be more expensive than paying the ones that were left overtime? Losing that money could have been avoided if they had just used a calculator...yea...that's wasteful spending.

Proven record at corruption would be more accurate.

If you really want change in your community then vote for Luke. I think you especially would know better than to vote for the oppressive machine.

so we are supposed to follow what Eye on on Miami now? Look closer at Gimenez's campaign reports and that should be enough for you to realize he is an establishment candidate.

Funny thing, I just reread my post and I didn't see the sentence where I'm suggesting you should vote for Gimenez cause Eye on Miami supports him...however, I was hoping that I would make a point without having to explain in detail what I meant. So to elaborate on my last sentence, I was making a point as to why MNT would discredit a candidate that seems to be supported by the very same bloggers that they claim are credible sources of information.

There is no perfect politician, in fact, to say there is an honest politician is an oxymoron in my eyes. But when we look out our choices, we may want to go with the lesser of 2 evils. So between Robaina and Gimenez...I'm all for Gimenez.
