Lady Gaga Jumps into Immigration Reform Debate

Rick Scott failed this year on his campaign promise to bring Arizona-style immigration laws to Florida, but if he tries to push the controversial reforms next year, he could make himself a very powerful enemy: Lady Gaga. Never one to shy away from GLBT issues, the Fame Monster has now expanded her political reach and has positioned herself as a fierce defender of immigrant rights.

Gaga first jumped into the immigration debate last year at a concert in Arizona. She noted how she refused to cancel the concert after others had asked her to join in a boycott of the state, but added "I'll tell you what we have to do about SB 1070. We have to be active. We have to actively protest, and the nature of the Monster Ball is to actively protest prejudice and injustice, and the bullshit that is put on our society."

Performing in Guadalajara, Mexico last week, Gaga took her stance on the issue one step forward and premiered a protest song written in response to SB 1070 called "Americano." It'll premier on her next album, you know, along with a song in which she calls Latinos people of "chola decent." Here's a rough video:

"I don't stand by many of those unjust immigration laws in my country," Gaga reportedly declared.

Eh, we can't really judge from this bad quality clip, but M.I.A.'s "Illy Girl" is still our favorite immigration protest song.

Gaga's contributions to a complicated political issue may seem silly, but Jezebel points out that she does have a surprising amount of political pull.

Rick Scott better tread carefully. If he thinks the Florida press corp is annoying, he better be prepared for the onslaught of hysterical fans Mother Monster could unleash on him for threatening any more of this Arizona-style nonsense.
