Miami Beach's Jerry Libbin Wants An Urban Beach Weekend Curfew

Miami Beach Commissioner Jerry Libbin says a curfew imposed for next year's South Beach Memorial Day festivities may be in order.

Libbin, in response to two police shootings that left seven injured and one dead early Monday, wrote on his Facebook page that the "mayhem on the streets of Miami Beach" has led him to recommend considering a curfew for future partiers, adding that he "will not stand by for another Memorial Day tragedy such as this weekend."

He is the first public official to speak up about the incident, the low point of a weekend that has been a touchy subject for years -- community activists like the Unity League's Herb Sosa said that "unruly and unlawful visitors are NOT WELCOME in Miami Beach," but others have long said complaints are racially motivated.

Political responses to the incident and the event in general will surely be carefully calculated, but Miami Beach Mayor Matti Herrera Hower and city manager Jorge M. Gonzalez were expected to meet Monday night to discuss the future of the event, according to WPLG.

I think early club closures and a curfew could be a good start. Then start issuing tickets for indecent exposure to all the semi nude people walking on our streets.  Set up strategic check points looking for weapons, arrest warrants etc. There are ways of getting rid of this. We should host a Big Jazz/Latin Jazz/event or something more in tune with our beautiful city. We do not need Thug/Gangsta "culture". If the city truly was creative (Matti Bower is certainly not that person) The city could sponsor or help organize some decent event to attract a new crowd. Oh and city manager Jorge Gonzalez has been there for far too long. He is responsible for lax permitting in the early stages of Urban Weekend. So let's vote the bums out and start fresh!

Political posturing for a 2013 Miami Beach Mayoral run.

The long weekend was expected to draw 300,000 visitors to South Beach this year, with clubs hosting popular hip-hop artists like Chris Brown, DJ Kahled and Rick Ross. The crowd has typically been almost exclusively African American, and Sunday night was no exception. The ANSWER is right in that paragraph.

that would make perfect sense to place a curfew. it will slowly drive away those unruly visitors from visiting our communities and causing a ruckus in our streets! I would prefer to completely shut down the event, but that can arise questions of racism and prejudices from those who attend this event. Therefore the promotors and sponsors of this event will slowly, but surely see their profits drop and shut it down all together.

Yep.  The answer is "hip-hop."  No G ever committed a drive-by shooting while listening to Wynton Marsalis.  The problem is the gangster sub-culture that glorifies violence and perpetuates poverty, and that sub-culture manifests itself in and identifies itself through hip-hop music.  As long as Miami Beach keeps holding hip-hop festivals, there will be violence and even death.
