Jeffrey Brown, a 19-year-old red shirt freshman on the University of Miami Hurricanes football team, has been charged with raping a woman on the school's Coral Gables campus. Brown has been suspended from the team indefinitely.

The victim told police that she returned to her dorm shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday morning feeling ill and intoxicated. Brown allegedly entered her room pretending to be concerned, but the victim said he proceeded to rape her. The victim told Brown to stop, but because of her state and Brown's size, she was not able to fight him off. Brown is listed at six-foot-three and 295 pounds.

Brown, originally from Evanston, Illinois, turned himself into Coral Gables Police Wednesday afternoon and was charged with sexual battery.

"The University of Miami has become aware of the serious charges made against a student athlete, and he has been suspended indefinitely from the football program," a University of Miami statement reads.

Brown's attorney released a statement maintaining Brown did not break any laws or school rules that night.

Brown is the second UM player to be arrested under the watch of new coach Al Golden. Raymond Buchanan was arrested after a drunken and violent confrontation with police in Coconut Grove but has since been reinstated on the team.

Only one player was arrested under previous coach Randy Shannon, and that was for punching the side mirror of a car.

I also went to high school with Jeff. He has always been a great teammate and friend. I dont think this was a victimless crime, but I think we should hear both sides before we decide that Jeff is guilty. Jeff has always displayed the highest of character and a role model to all.

I went to high school with Jeff and he really was one of the nicest guys i knew. He was caring and considerate of other peoples feelings. That being said, I'm not going to say that he's not capable of this because anyone is capable of anything. However, i hope that this is not true. If these are false accusations then i hope the truth comes out. I am so saddened by this news. He had our whole town behind him watching and anticipating his football success. I know there are a lot of people who doubted his abilities but we all know if he was given the right opportunities he would have shined. It's just a shame that this had to happen.
