Rick Scott's Brother Is a Welfare Recipient With a History of Drug Charges

Categories: Politicks

Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed into law a bill that requires all people seeking welfare take mandatory drug tests. Interestingly, it turns out Scott has a younger brother who receives welfare and seems to have a history of drug charges.

A joint effort by our sister papers New Times Broward-Palm Beach and the Dallas Observer shows that 54-year-old Roger Scott lives in a modest two-bedroom apartment in Dallas, Texas. He doesn't work and lives off social security checks. A Roger Scott with the same birthday and personal information has been charged with numerous crimes, including drug possession.

Roger told an Observer reporter that he's close to his governor brother but doesn't get to talk to him much.

Governor Scott said that instituting the drug-tests-for-welfare policy would "increase personal responsibility" and "personal accountability."

Though, Roger Scott's situation might not be a cut-and-dried case of a man who's necessarily giving up all responsibility and has decided to suckle on the teat of social security for the heck of it.

Reporter Victoria Bekiempis also contacted Scott's mother, Esther. She says Roger has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and struggles to keep up with his treatments.

Although Roger was the only member of the Scott family not present at the governor's inauguration, the two apparently still keep in touch. The walls of Roger's apartment are full of newspaper clippings about his brother, and he claims his multimillionaire sibling helps him out from time to time by paying his utility bills and hospital visits.

Valdimort says: I know how to create jobs, fire people! LOL now pee in this cup! No one should ever have to pee in a cup to get a job. When did everyone become suspected criminals? The only reason we have to pee in a cup is so the employer can be free of liability, but it is still a violation of our freedom. It is the same as treating anyone going on a plane as a suspect, it has yet to make us safer, just less free. Tea Party is the worst 2nd third party ever.

I live in Indiana, and I'd have no problem with folks on welfare having to take drug tests.  I had random drug tests at my job that put money into state and federal coffers, so what's wrong with those on the receiving end of my taxes being drug tested?  I do hope that all states that drug test welfare recipients make sure there's a way folks aren't disqualified for doctor prescribed prescriptions.  But I have no problem denying food stamps to someone who chooses to spend what cash they have on pot, or another drug of choice, and allowing taxpayers to buy their food!  One thing is for sure, if all states drug tested their welfare recipients, there would be a LOT fewer state and federal tax dollars needed for welfare programs!  Maybe HUD should do drug tests, too; that would surely save taxpayers some money.  And who knows, maybe if folks stopped getting high all the time they would be able to hold a job and buy their own food and pay their own rent!  The law abiding welfare recipients would having nothing to fear, only the druggies on welfare would be affected.

Where would they get drug money? Welfare would only be good for one high and they're junkies. Besides, whose job were you planning to give them? Mine? They're junkies. They already voted. They can continue in that vein.

I complain about my new governor's policies and will continue to until the crook is out of office! You are out of line...Oh, wait, you must be psychic! That would explain how you came to the conclusion that all of us that complain voted for him. Here's a newsflash....not everyone in Florida voted for that idiot! There are actually a few smart people left down here that did NOT vote for him. I'm proud to say that I, and my family are in that minority.

give me a break

What is he doing that is remotely "crooked?"  What is fascist about expecting individuals to take a drug test before receiving a hand out from the state?  This is common place in the private sector.

Key word...PRIVATE . People who need a welfare benefits the most are children.......Why should children be affected by laws drummed up by a hypocrite who takes drugs and welfare so personally. Obviously Rick Scott is jaded by his brother's lifestyle on drugs and his criminal activities.

You don't think it's remotely crooked that Scott owns the drug testing company?   Oh yeah, he did transfer ownership to his wife recently, when that minor detail came out.  This is all about profit for Rick Scott.

It's no use give me a break, libs want nothing but handouts, they fail to see how u employment as gone Dow, they don't care about the facts, and whatever here is the idiot, they don't know how to act or be civilize it's all hate with them, get a life whatever, have some class. Lol

Whatever

You, sir, are a moron.  Are you talking about welfare recipients or state employees?  You don't know.  If welfare recipients (the topic of the article), wtf is the "private sector" of welfare?  Tell me.  If state employees, what handout?  They are EMPLOYEES, you idiot.  People like you are what's wrong with this country and this state.  You are almost certainly uneducated, and have been turned down when you applied for state employment.  You have never in your life read the US (or Florida) constitutions, let alone attempted to develop any understanding of how the legal systems which interpret and defend them work.  FUCK YOU.  America and Florida would be much better off if you stuck your finger too far up your nose and bled out.

Tsk Tsk. I never said anything about the "'private sector' of welfare." Whatever that is.  Clearly it is common place for those EMPLOYED in the PRIVATE SECTOR to undergo DRUG TESTING.  So it is not too much to expect that those relying on tax payer sponsored hand outs to similarly undergo drug testing before they get their free cash.  If you care to get into a legal or constitutional debate, be it Florida, U.S., or otherwise, I relish the opportunity,  Otherwise, your inbred mommy should wash your mouth out with soap.
