Perhaps the solution to Miami's economic problems is the same as your abuela's solution to boredom: telenovelas! Telemundo plans to shoot about 1,100 hours of telenovelas in Miami-Dade this year. That represents an investment of about $35 million and 550 new jobs.

a href="http://www.miamitodaynews.com/news/110623/story4.shtml">According to Miami Today, Telemundo, which is head quartered in Hialeah, will shoot about 85 percent of their telenovelas in the county this year. The Spanish-language daily soap operas are then distributed through out Latin America.

Miami Today suggests that most of those 550 jobs will be full-time, in-house positions.

The move also illustrates a shift in which both Telemundo and its rival Univision concentrate production of original series in Miami-Dade. Both stations use to rely on importing soap operas from other countries, but are increasingly producing their own original shows.

By the way, Telemundo, if you need someone to play, say, the confused, young American lover of the family's scandalous matriarch whose only lines are "No habla español" and "¡Ay, mami!" please get in touch with my people.
