Bill Clinton Calls Rick Scott's Felon Disenfranchisement Rules Racist and Politically Motivated

Not very many people in Florida like Governor Rick Scott, so we really didn't expect former democratic President Bill Clinton to like the guy much either. While speaking at a conference for young progressive activists in D.C. today, Clinton called out Scott's effort to strip voting rights from convicted felons and inferred that the move was racist and politically motivated.

"Why should we disenfranchise people forever once they've paid their price?" Clinton told the crowd about Scott's reforms. "Because most of them in Florida were African Americans and Hispanics who tended to vote for Democrats. That's why."

According to Politico, Clinton also called out similar initiatives in other states.

Back in March, Scott and his cabinet passed a rule that would require non-violent convicted felons to wait five years to apply to have their voting rights restored. Florida's felony disenfranchisement law dates back to the post-Civil War era when white politicians tried to limit the political impact of black voters.

During the terms of Republican Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist however those laws were eased. Non-violent felons had their rights immediately restores, and other convicted felons did not have to wait to apply to have their rights reinstated. Crist made headlines back in March when he reversed that recent history.

Clinton's statement is irresponsible racial demagoguery.   What Gov. Scott did makes perfect sense:  If you aren't willing to follow the law, you can't claim a right to make the law for everyone else.  The right to vote can be restored to felons, but it should be done carefully, on a case-by-case basis, once the individual has shown he has really turned over a new leaf -- not automatically.  For more on this issue, see our website: http://www.ceousa.org/content/...

With the exception of Hiliary and maybe his personal staff, does any body give a shit what Bill Clintons says? Life long politician (like our President) that have no real world experience in anything giving their two cents. You commit a felon you have no rights as far as I am concerned, that is part of the penalty. Does the Democratic Party know any other way of increasing their voter base other than on the backs of felons and illegals?

You should correct the article: Jeb Bush did NOT do this, Charlie Crist did.

Correction: You meant- Scott right? not "Crist made headlines back in March when he reversed that recent history. "

You bet we care about what Bill Clinton says.  Clinton is admired and respected around the world for good reasons.  How can you say Clinton has no real world experience?  Clinton did not come from a wealthy family.  Clinton has traveled the world to improve the lives of all people.

Republicans and the TEA party are handing Democrats registered voters with their assault on Social Security and Medicare.  Eight long years of dubya is the reason Obama got elected. Were are burned out on wars of choice, the erosion of our assets, stocks, savings even our homes.  It didn't matter who the Democrat was the nation was suffering from GOP fatigue! Private prisons who donate heavily to the GOP are lobbying to build even more prisons. We all know what that means more arrests on petty crimes to line the pockets of firms like Wackenhut now known as GEO Group.

Perhaps if republicans would quit arresting & charging Blacks at a ratio of 50 to one, they wouldn't have to face questions like this.   AND yes we could increase our voter base if Republicans didn't keep passing racist bills and committing Election Fraud.  Come to think of it, the last time I checked Florida had more registered Democrats than Republicans and that it's been that way for a long time.   How did we get a republican legislature?  Election fraud and rigged voting districts.

Maybe you don't know this but Bill Clinton is one of the most liked ex-presidents of all time, and yes, a lot of people are interested in what he has to say, and he makes a lot of sense.

Actually, yes, lots of people care what Clinton has to say. The Clinton Global Initiative is highly respected across the entire planet, and he himself has been an honored guest in most countries in the world. You should take your head out of the sand and research what people are doing before you put them down so carelessly. And please, explain to me how "illegals" are voting, I'd love to hear this one. Be sure to include references to actual reports, not political commentary sites.
