County Commissioner Barbara Jordan Is All Alone On An Iceberg
![]() |
Jordan is upset with a component of Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez's proposed budget that calls for laying off 395 employees in the county's Head Start program, which provides services for poor children in the community. But apparently, her colleagues don't seem to care.
"I am disappointed that a majority of [county commissioners] support the mayor's proposal," Jordan wrote, while calling for people to join her "in exposing and opposing this injustice."
So far, Jordan's tactic has only left her on her own. At yesterday's county commission meeting, Jordan -- the commissioner with the highest personal worth thanks in part to her six-figure county pension -- was the only one to vote against eliminating the unpopular property tax hike from last year that is a key element to Gimenez's budget.
