Doctors today are still struggling to save the life of an off-duty New York City cop grievously wounded during an early morning shootout on South Beach on Saturday. Detective Harold Thomas has undergone at least two surgeries after a bullet tore through his femoral artery during the gunfight on Collins Avenue.

Miami Beach police have yet to announce any motive for the shooting. "He's been in a medically induced coma, so we can't interview the detective," Det. Juan Sanchez, a Miami Beach PD spokesman, tells Riptide.

Thomas traveled to South Beach with two other off-duty cops on vacation, The Miami Herald reports this morning.

Just after 7 a.m. on Saturday, Thomas got into a gunfight outside his hotel, the 1233 Lofts at 12th Street and Collins. He was armed at the time and apparently got off at least one shot at his attackers in what police are calling a "random act" unrelated to Thomas' day job in NYC.

Joseph Cusanelli, another New York detective, tells Channel 10 that Thomas may have been the victim of an "early morning robbery attempt."

"It's very upsetting, very upsetting, that one of our own city detectives comes down on vacation and gets involved in this and is shot by somebody trying to rob him," Cusanelli tells the station.

Thomas has some serious credentials in New York: 27-years on the force, a first-grade detective badge and a spot on the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Sanchez says MBPD will issue a release when they have more details to share about the crime or any suspects in the shooting.

1 question....how did he get his gun on the plane?  2 questions....who brings a gun on vacation?  3 questions....where are the eyewitness, such as his vacationing partners? hmmmm

This is absolutely breaking my heart.  This is horrible.  It's so hard to be far from home too when you need to heal.  I pray that people in Miami, Florida will show him some love and support and comfort his Family.  It's a nightmare that no one should ever have to go through.  I hope he makes it through everything so we can all welcome him back here in New York City and help him get better.  God bless Detective Harold Thomas with a full and speedy recovery! ~~~~~~~Respectfully, Victoria Mary Stong / Former N.Y.P.D. Auxiliary Police Officer and Community Activist

The guy has not spoken to anyone. How do they know it was robbery? They don't.

You can carry a gun on your checked luggage.

You're in a city you don't know very well, and may look the part. Yeaah, criminals aren't going to want to take advantage of that. Leave your gun at home folks! Criminals don't bother you when you're on vacation!

Not that your questions are relevant, You can fly with a special liscense, Every police officer carries a gun because theyre still responsible to save your life even after they clock out.

Julissa is very right, Also there were people with him who probably didnt want to be mentioned. They probably saw everything and told the police

because theirs people investigating the case.. That's their profession. You don't need a murder victim to rise from the dead to solve a homicide.
