No books for you!
Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez yesterday proposed cutting the county's operating budget by $350 million. That includes whacking the library system's $50 million budget to $24.5 million. It seems 13 libraries will be shut down.

Riptide contributor Theo Karantsalis obtained the list of threatened libraries Thursday morning.

Give us a holler in the comments if you use any of these libraries, because if the mayor gets his way, they're toast:

  • Kendale Lakes
  • Little River
  • Edison Center
  • Fairlawn
  • South Shore
  • North Central
  • Culmer
  • Country Walk
  • Sunset
  • Palm Springs North
  • Virrick Park
  • Tamiami
  • Civic Center

In addition, library spokeswoman Victoria Galan told Karantsalis the proposed cuts would force all libraries to ax tutoring programs and eliminate evening and Sunday hours.

The Sunset library is very nice with very helpful staff. It is very convenient for the neighborhood folks. A lot of people use it. Only money available is Marlins Stadium which taxpayers voted against. Its all tax payer money no matter what account they used. The abuse from entitlements, medicaid etc is making things miserable for hard working folks. We can no longer carry the rest!

Civic Center!?!? But my little Civic Center is a tiny satellite that is the best. There's always people in and out of there. I thought they even received an award last year. This is so stupid. Take away the Commissioners' slush fund and keep the freaking libraries.

wow. Just what South Florida needs more of, less support of education. Unbelievable. I use the Kendale Lakes Library. Country Walk & Sunset? He's pretty much creating a library access vacuum in that area.

5 years ago we had a little over 20 libraries and within the last 4 year the director decided to open 20 more, seriously to everyone complaining. i am really surprised with the 60+ positions cut last year that some of these libraries were not closed, i blame both those in charge of the libraries for over reaching with their plans, if a plan is too increase the library system over miami it should be done gradually and not in a sudden increase. the increase was so fast that those in charge were thinking about all the money they got from the speculative property taxes of 2007, that they build more libraries than that they could handle on their budget. so now we face a near 200 employee cut for the libraries and 13 libraries that at times were not needed, since they were build within a mile of other existing libraries. with the added fact that many of the budget proposal leave all the fat cats intact.

WHY?????? IT'S RIDICULOUS...!!! CUT THE MAYOR'S BUDGET AT LEAST 50%, IT WILL RESOLVED A BIG PART OF THE CRISIS

Gimenez needs to cut Commissioner's budgets by at least 30%, probably more.

I use PSN at it is always very busy.Where will the overflow of kids go now? What will parents do who use the library like a day care?  The other libraries are already at full capacity. I agree with cuts, but not cutting essential services like libraries. more libraries equals less crime.

My heart seeks at the thought of closing ANY library. Library=liberty! The S.M.A.R.T. program ROCKS!

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

Great another closed building on 79th Street across from the other big one.  The two ghetto condo towers there could at least give their kids a hope of some education with the library right downstairs.  The City of Miami really needs to work on EVERYTHING east of I-95 and go from there.

personally i like little river because when it closes most of head to the take one strip club to make it rain using the fine money. one broad there gave me a 10 minutes lap dance for a big handful of change.

The Kendale Lakes library DOES get a lot of traffic, even though West Kendall Regional is not too far away. There are tons of families in West Kendall. I'm sad to see the Sunset branch go. It's a super convenient location for me.

Awesome! close libraries so the kids can join gangs instead of doing their homework and can sell drugs instead of reading books! Carlos Jimenez you PIG!

So I guess our company doesn't have to worry about bidding on the construction of the new library planned for Aventura?

As I said before it looks absolutely ridiculous, but turns out both brances serve a high volume of patrons.  Go figure.

Kendale Lakes is relatively new, and was an absurd waste considering a regional library down the block.  God knows how much they spent on the thing, but it does look nice!

The new libraries are:

Kendale LakesSunset Virrick Park

And Fairlawn was just recently renovated.

I thought Kendale Lakes was in a ridiculous location too, but then I did paperwork when I was working for MDPLS registering students for the S.M.A.R.T tutoring program.  Both libraries ended up with waiting lists...one forgets how many young families are living in such a small area in West Kendall.

I used to work at a public school in Country Walk. There are so many people who use that library. I used to go there and check out books for my students. So sad.

They just opened kedall lakes library and now they are going to close it? Did they not realize that there is already a library in Hammocks that in no more than a half mile away?

Good job to whoever agreed to build that library. Should be fired!

What a shame indeed.... Brand new library that wasn't opened too long ago. He wants to shut it down? I tried real hard to look for the price tag on the library construction, but seriously.

Kendale Lakes Branch

The Kendale Lakes Branch, the third of 10 libraries to be built as part of the Library System’s Capital Construction Plan, is a 15,000 square-foot facility, being built on a two-acre parcel. Patrons can look forward to enjoying a collection of 30,000 books and materials and will have access to the Internet through a state-of-the-art Wi-Fi environment. The branch is expected to be completed in Fall 2008.

Of the three libraries on Miami Beach, South Shore was a delight to visit. North Shore is a toilet with a surly and unhappy staff in a too smell building. The main library on 21st Street is large and the staff helpful. But South Shore was a garden spot compared to the other two. Sorry to see it go.

And yet North Shore holds for me every book I request. I can walk to pick it up. I flat out LOVE it. Love!

I don't like the one on 22nd, too many dirty people walking around without shirts using the guest computers and they smell like BO. plus the staff there is rude.

I know that guy since he worked in the downtown library. Always polite and would talk to you like you are a real person. It will be a shame to see the library close.
