Donna Shalala Must Admit Blame In Nevin Shapiro Scandal or Resign
Instead, the University of Miami president came up lame. In fact, she pulled her own version of "I did not have sexual relations with that woman."
In a prepared statement, Shalala said:
As a member of the University family, I am upset, disheartened, and saddened by the recent allegations leveled against some current and past student-athletes and members of our Athletic Department. (Emphasis added.)Notice she didn't say she was disappointed in her own actions. In the treasure trove of photographs Shapiro provided Yahoo! Sports for their investigation, there is an image showing Shalala holding a $50,000 check from the convicted Ponzi schemer and grinning like an insane Smeagol drooling over his precious ring.
Her claims about being "upset, disheartened, and saddened" are disingenuous to say the least. The Yahoo! Sports report clearly implicates Shalala so she can't pawn off blame. She has to accept responsibility too. If she can't fess up, then a resignation is in order.
