Donna Shalala Must Admit Blame In Nevin Shapiro Scandal or Resign

shalala1.jpg
Yesterday, we finally heard Donna Shalala comment on Hurricane Nevin, the category 5 storm of a man who released the Kraken on her and Canes nation. You'd think a lady who worked in the Clinton Administration would know how to do a little damage control.

Instead, the University of Miami president came up lame. In fact, she pulled her own version of "I did not have sexual relations with that woman."

In a prepared statement, Shalala said:
As a member of the University family, I am upset, disheartened, and saddened by the recent allegations leveled against some current and past student-athletes and members of our Athletic Department. (Emphasis added.)
Notice she didn't say she was disappointed in her own actions. In the treasure trove of photographs Shapiro provided Yahoo! Sports for their investigation, there is an image showing Shalala holding a $50,000 check from the convicted Ponzi schemer and grinning like an insane Smeagol drooling over his precious ring.

She's also standing next to Shapiro and ex-men's basketball coach Frank Haith when the unhinged felon's money was all good baby, baby.

Her claims about being "upset, disheartened, and saddened" are disingenuous to say the least. The Yahoo! Sports report clearly implicates Shalala so she can't pawn off blame. She has to accept responsibility too. If she can't fess up, then a resignation is in order.

Donna Shalala is a liar; plain and simple.  Any rookie cop could see she is lying in her prepared video statement; most telling is Shalala shaking her head "No" (side to side) while trying to tell a lie.  She is not a good liar; not one bite convincing.  Her lying skill is equivalent to her managing skill.  She needs to get fired.

Sha  la la separated herself from the firing of coach Shannon. She did nothing! I hope she gets what she deserves. The boosters is also at fault. Coach Shannon was trying to clean up the program, supporters sacrifice the future of a honest coach over winning. This is justice for all those fans who wanted Shannon gone. Suffer, you all deserve it!

I guess that whole "INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty" doesn't apply to the 'Canes?

The real investigation should be where was the Miami sports media when all this was going down. That's the real problem, the fourth estate is now in bed with the whole industry. And why not, that's how our whole system works now, all fixed and corrupt.

Shalala has done great things for the University of Miami. Academic rank has risen into a top tier school, our med school has gained national notoriety for it's excellence in several fields, and incredible advances have been made in campus life and academic investment.  No school is immune to having someone come from out of the woodwork and claim allegations like this regardless of administration. It's how these allegations are handled which is how an administration should be judged. The University and Shalala self reported these allegations to the NCAA when Shapiro brought them to the University and refused to cooperate and allow University counsel to any purported "proof." And why don't you take a step back a second and realize the source of these claims.  This guy made a "living" out of scheming people (to the tune of an immense $930 million). Maybe everyone should wait until the TRUTH is revealed. Many of his allegations have already had holes poked in them. And it's been reported that Yahoo! paid Shapiro $1 million for his story. A convicted felon and liar who owes restitution to his victims? Sounds like someone who would say almost anything for a million dollars.  Especially if he felt scorned by a University who returned his dirty money and removed his name from a student study room. As for his lawyer, well, she was cited and reprimanded by the US District Court for Southern Florida for "wanton and reckless disregard for the truth"

Get your head out of your ass Francisco Alvarado. Stop acting like you know what you are talking about.

CANEs, I I respect your knowledge of things that are here for the eye to behold, but don't set yourself up for failure when it comes to your belief in Donna Shalala.

"...our med school has gained national notoriety for it's excellence"

I think you mean "national recognition".

I've said it before . The underlying NCAA  premise is you pimp a bunch of 19 year old kids into a multi million dollar Saturday afternoon entertainment program which in turn funds your academic university?  Then you get pi$$ed when some whacked out jock sniffer lets the kids get into the cookie jar?   Priceless!Shalala may be a lot of things but stupid isn't one of them.

Let me start by saying I don't care about college football and think the pretense of players being untainted by money or influence when billions of dollars are at stake is a sham.

That being said: resign? Really? First of all, nowhere in the Yahoo article is Shalala implicated. She's smiling (normally, not insanely) at a hefty check in the photo, just like any other person short of a billionaire would be. Frankie, the day you get a 50k check you'll be swinging from the rafters.

Second, it's a freakin' football program, people! I know it's ridiculously important for some of you -and frankly, that's a sad commentary of the state of higher education on some universities- but she's is the president of a huge college, of which teh football program is only one part. Get a grip.

She better not admit to any wrongdoing.  Any confession will cause the programs to be gutted.

How come nowhere in this article says that all the money that the University received from this man, is being returned? The University is returning all the donations. Also, don't forget that Shapiro was using legit corporations as cover up and at the time of the donations, there was no way for the University or anyone to know that this man was a crook. Sure, like they say, hindsight is 20/20 and now we all see clearly what he really was. President Shalala was not trying to sweep this under the rug. The University went forward last year to the NCAA and have been cooperating with the investigation since. But like most investigations, they are done privately and secretly in order to get all the facts without the press and the public tainting the evidence. I wasn't there, I don't know what happened, I'm not going to say that this can't happen, but consider the source. Shapiro has to be an amazing liar to be able to cheat people out of $930,000,000 and now all of a sudden, everything he says is believed as the gospel truth? Come on people! The evidence that Yahoo keeps presenting is credit card statements, phone records, etc. all circumstantial. Yes, a few players have come forward admitting to receiving gifts from this man, but how does that tie to the president as the article above tries to imply?

How exactly does the article implicate her? I mean sure, she may have been negligent, or blissfully ignorant, and maybe a little too eager to take Nevin Shapiro's money and allow his proximity to the program with no questions asked, but i don't think there's any smoking gun that says she knowingy participated in facilitating or benefitting from his illicit actions...

If you think it does'nt implicate her then I have 50'000 acres of prime Overtown real estate waiting on your dumb ass to purchase. All I need is your bank account routing number and hope you don't do your due dillingence in checking my credentials. Kevin, Kevin, Kevin... Oh poor, poor blind Kevin.. HA HA HA.

she's in charge and clearly was not properly supervising the university, it happened on her watch, make the big bucks and take the responsibilities, she needs to immediately resign

I think her mismanagement of the entire scandal, including dismissing it as something the university could sweep under the rug and ignore shows ineffective leadership.

Shalala did not dismiss the scandal nor did she try to sweep it under the rug you idiot. Shapiro basically tried to intimidate the university with these ALLEGATIONS a year ago and the University self reported them to the NCAA when he made them. The University asked for his cooperation and Shapiro refused to give them anything. Clearly he was waiting for his big media moment and for the $1 million Yahoo! paid him for his allegations. Shalala and the athletic department took this issue head on. They have fully cooperated with the NCAA. You are clearly ignorant to the facts of this case. It really amazes me how people have taken this guy's story as pure gospel. He is, as Yahoo! wrote in a different article, a sociopath and pathological liar (yup Yahoo! called him that and then took his inflammatory claims against UM as credible fact. Amazing.)

So why not put everything out there to incoming employees who in Al Golden and staff were. Saying that they had just left gainful and good standing employment with their past universities?

CANEs; I can only hope that what you are saying is true, because the media haters are'nt giving the public the info that you seem to be informed with. If you are doing your research as a true Cane fan, then much props to ya! Let us in on what you know is factual.

Know your NCAA rules. They were not allowed to discuss the investigation or its details with them during their interview process in anyway shape or form. Additionally, the initial investigation was started and made known by the NCAA in 2010. Anyone applying for the job would have known about it. Anyone closely involved with NCAA functions (such as a head coach) would have known that the NCAA was inquiring into the University for possible misconduct even though publicity had not reach the scale it has now.

She made the mistake of not telling Golden or Eichorst during their interview process that the school was under investigation. How is that not mismanagement?
