It's the craze sweeping hoards of South Americans looking to drop a few kilograms in time for summer.

It's the latest sign that Venezuela's president is further sinking into some sort of out-of-touch Kim Jong Il-styled insanity.

It's the Hugo Chavez workout tape!



The Latin American dictator seems to have issues of health and mortality weighing heavily on his mind ever since he had a baseball-sized tumor removed from his body in Cuba last month. While celebrating his 57th birthday this past week, he not only promised to run for re-election in 2012, but vowed to stay in power until he is at least 77.

Hence the filmed workout session. It's an apparent attempt to prove his physical fitness and longevity. In fact, the video itself is intercut with warnings from Chavez himself to potential political rivals that his health crisis will not weaken him in the 2012 election.

Yet, the very notion of a supposed eastern hemisphere leader participating in a workout session with his cabinet for political gain is, suffice it to say, bizarre. Dare we even imagine a filmed workout session being broadcast featuring President Obama sweating to the oldies along side Janet Napolitano, Ray LaHood and Hillary Clinton? Not even MSNBC would air that.

We're just surprised Fidel Castro and Evo Moralez didn't pop up in the background doing jumping jacks in matching red tank tops.
