Isaac Aelion, Sunny Isles Beach Commish, Gets Year of Probation for Shady Campaigning

It's about time to give Miami-Dade's northern seaside enclave a more appropriate moniker -- Shady Isles Beach, perhaps?

Consider: Last fall, voters in Sunny Isles Beach had three choices for city commission. One of them, Isaac Feldman, was later arrested for his role running an amazing South Beach scam involving Eastern European "B-girls." Now, his opponent and the eventual winner -- businessman Isaac Aelion -- has been caught red-handed spending thousands on illegal campaign ads and sentenced to a year of probation.

Hindsight is 20/20, Sunny Isles voters, but maybe you should have gone for Jeniffer Viscarra, the candidate who eventually lost to Aelion in a runoff?

Aelion was found guilty yesterday of a first-degree misdemeanor stemming from a flyer he surreptitiously sent to 8,500 voters around town before the December election.

He was an officer in the Israeli army and lived in Canada before moving to Sunny Isles in '94. He owns a laundry list of businesses around town, according to state records, including the Jean Michelle Day Spa & Salon near 178th Street.

His trouble with the law began last November, when the Miami-Dade ethics commission started looking into a flyer attacking Viscarra and Michael Schnitzer, who was running against the town's mayor, Norman Eddlecup.

The flyer was anonymous, but investigators easily tracked it to Bee-Jay Printing, where the owner fingered Aelion as the buyer. In fact, Aelion paid $3,659 for the flyers after acting nervous and repeatedly asking the owner whether the mailers could be traced to his campaign.

Aelion never reported the mailer on his campaign finance reports.

Now he'll have to serve one year of probation, repay $4,000, and serve 35 hours of community service.

Sadly, Shady Isles is stuck with the guy until the next election rolls around. (But hey, at least you didn't vote for Feldman!)

Jacob, The reason residents do not speak out on the ISAAC AELION SCANDAL is because the crime he was convicted of during the 2010 election, and the one year probation he was sentenced to by Miami-Dade County Judge Cristina Miranda has not been reported in the SIB community newspaper. Therefore most residents of SIB do not know about it so you cannot blame them. It is a sad commentary when you consider the SIB community paper is funded by taxpayers - but this is one news story being kept very hush-hush. On two occasions people have spoken out at the Commission Meetings about Aelion's disgrace, but unbelievably Mayor Norman Edelcup has NEVER issued a public comment on this important matter.

ROXY : Wouldn't it look to you that the residents couldn't care less ??? Otherwise, wouldn't they have raised holy hell and get him where he deserves ??? : OUT...!!!!

Would somebody please tell me whether Mayor Edelcup had the Shady Isles school built with his own money or he donated a significant part of its cost to deserve the school to be named after him...??? Likewise the naming the street north of WALGREENS after Mr, TURETSKI ??? May I ask what is his relevance to get even a dump after him ??? Because to my knowledge, he was the Board president of the Winston Towers 700 when that scandal broke out of the worst and most stupid contract ever signed for any work at  any building but it seems to the authorities of Shady Isles that since birds of a feather flock together, judging from Mr. AELION being on "probation",TURETSKI deserves a street named after him.....

You cut right through the nonsense, Roxy.  I could not agree more.

ClassAction3:  To clarify, there were three races for three different positions in 2010. Neither Mayor Edelcup nor Commissioner Gato or their opponents faced criminal charges or investigations.  Only my two opponents, Isaac Aelion and Isaac Feldman ran into trouble with the law.  Aelion was convicted and I believe the case against Feldman is still pending

Interesting concept Caio. And since he compares himself to St. Joan of Arc who was burned at the stake perhaps self-immolation would be the way to go.

Hahahaha! Hero?  Saint?  You fashion yourself a hero and also a saint?  What the hell is wrong with you?  Listen up St. Isaac of Sunny Isles Beach; just because you claim to have been an officer in the Israeli army doesn't make you a hero.  You left Israel so your allegiance could not have been that great to your former country.  Then you made your way to the U.S. by way of several countries and began your amazing HEROIC, SAINTLY business career; selling alcohol and bingo cards.  Peddling to the weak although I'm sure you think yourself a purveyor of fine wines and entertainment.

I guess it was JOSEPH GOEBBELS, Hitler's Minister of Propaganda... However, if your comment applies to Mr.AELION, are you going to dispute the findings of the investigation...????? By GOD, that if anybody is willing and able to go to such extremes to secure his  election, there has to be a real good reason behind it and please, don't give me the BS of being due to his deep and immense wish to serve us.... It is rather to serve himself....

Merriam-Webster's Dictionary - Definitions of the word "Hero" (1) Hero - a man admired for his achievements and qualities: brave, courageous, gallant, greathearted, noble - NONE OF THESE apply Webster's also has another definition for the word "hero" and this is the one that applies to Isaac Aelion (2) Hero - a large sandwich on a long split roll filled with lots and lots of bologna and ham No doubt about it...Aelion belongs to #2 - lots and lots of bologna and ham More words that apply: arrogant, pompous, pretentious, and last but not least DELUSIONAL. Are you getting my drift "Mr. What Really Happened" or do you want to continue making a complete and utter fool out of yourself??? One last thing you should try to remember: SELF PRAISE STINKS

One clarification ClassAction3 -- The two candidates that faced criminal charges and/or investigation were my two opponents -- Isaac Aelion and Isaac Feldman (both running for seat 4).  There were other candidates for other seats, who have not been criminally charged or investigated -- the Mayor and his opponent, and Commissioner Gato and her opponent.    That said, I would encourage readers to visit www.sibreporter.net where they will find the state attorney's statement of facts and close out memo on the front page.  These are public documents that should be revisited for the sake of context.  Look at the evidence.  There is no sign of Joan of Arc in there.  Quite to the contrary.....

Oh please...let's not make this guy a martyr....he broke the law!!!...the laws are made so that everyone gets a fair chance....if he's capable of doing what he did, who knows what else he is capable of....an elected official must always be held to a higher standard....he should resign....he is dirty....

ew this article is a bunch of bullshit. you people are all so sad. you have nothing better to do then to bother a poor guy who had no bad intentions, he wanted to get people's votes to make sunny isles a better place, as he is currently doing.

If this guy has any regard for the people he supposedly represents, he will RESIGN.  Not being Feldman is not exactly a very high standard.  At least Feldman kept his dubious activities out of the election!

@Miloops370 Hint from Heloise:  The "shift" key is not a dress.  It's for capitalizing the first letter of a sentence.  Also, the little "dot" key is actually a literary device known as a "period."  It goes at the end of a sentence.

So many grammatically incorrect idiots, so little time.

One business Aelion owns but kept quiet about is Crocodile Discount Liquors, 7920 North Miami Avenue...guess he figured that didn't look too good for the "war hero, pillar of the community" image he was trying to ram down voters throats...but facts is facts and there ain't no denying that in some parts of Miami, Isaac Aelion is known as "Mr. Crocodile Discount Liquors."

Too bad Shady Isles voters were taken in by a big money campaign that tried to create a false image using deplorable tactics. Investigators did a fabulous job uncovering this slimy affair. And the word RECALL is being tossed about...stay tuned folks...this story is not over.

your a total asshole. this man happens to be a loving father, a wonderful and dedicated husband, and a humble person overall. -his daughter

Your vulgar and cheap shots to all who posted here are a direct reflection on your father. That he could raise a daughter that uses such disgraceful and insulting language speaks volumes about his own character. When you say he had no bad intentions you are either in denial or more likely not being honest. The facts are your father was investigated and convicted of violating the law to win an election. His bad intentions were quite evident. He will never win another election in this town again. Those who break the law should not be the ones who make the law.

@ClassAction3 I have a serious problem with people who use "your" when they really mean "you're."  Nothing says "I'm ignorant" better than utilizing poor spelling and grammar.  My inner English teacher would immediately give her a big red F without reading any further than the first word.  Just saying.

R.W.
R.W.

Mr. "What really happened" -- The problem with your statement is a logical fallacy known as a false dilemma.  You present the "facts" as if there were only two choices for the SIB Joan of Arc. 1) Save the City by breaking the law or 2) be inactive.  The third obvious choice is to be active and remain within the bounds of the law.   Because Mr. Aelion could not fathom this third option, or any other option that was even close to ethical, Sunny Isles Beach now has the dubious distinction of having a sitting commissioner on probation.  No matter how much Mr. Aelion may wish for this to go away, what he did was so offensive to the voters who trusted him  and so embarrassing to  the city, that the scandal will not simply be swept under the rug.  Time has not been kind in this respect.  The residents remember.  The residents talk about it.  The residents resent it.  And rightfully so.

ClassAction3
ClassAction3

What a self-serving and absurd statement. You obviously live by the creed "No sense being stupid if you can't show it." To compare Aelion to Joan of Arc is obscene and ridiculous. Poor Joan must be turning in her grave! People are not idiots and can easily see past your pathetic and inane attempt to justify breaking the law. "What really happened" is the people of SIB were grievously short-changed. The "bad element" you refer to was the only candidate in the race who has not faced criminal charges or criminal investigation. That is the real "story behind the story."

What really happened
What really happened

Sometimes in life one is confronted with a situation where one has to choose between acting at a sacrifying cost to save a City from bad elements coming to City Hall , or stay inactive and allow those bad elements to take over City Hall and create a downward trend for the City and all its residents. This Joan of Arc paid the heavy price and got wounded protecting the City, and will always carry the scars of the wound with pride, because at the end of the day a great service was rendered to the residents of this beautiful City. So, ClassAction3, please don't prejudge until you know all there is to know about the story behind the story.
