Shawn Loftis, Substitute Teacher, Gets Canned By Miami Dade Public Schools For Being a Gay Porn Star

Categories: News

collinoneal.jpg
From Collin O'Neal's Twitter page.
CNN doesn't have a problem with Shawn Loftis's big, gay porn career. Should Miami-Dade County Public Schools?

Using the nom de porn Collin O'Neal, he won awards for virtuoso performances in hard-core films such as Mo' Bubble Butt, Humping Iron, and Desperate Husbands.

In 2005, Miami Beach resident Loftis started Collin O'Neal Productions. His film series, "World of Men," was based on a unique concept: He'd travel to exotic -- but not necessarily sexy -- locales such as Lebanon and Serbia.

Between scenes of the Loftis cavorting with local hunks, he'd give viewers tours of famous monuments and settings, complete with historical context.

Yes, Loftis -- who studied international relations with a focus on the Middle East at Florida International University and earned a master's in public administration from the University of Miami -- has never been just about the porn. He has achieved some national notoriety, in fact, for his dedicated "citizen reporting" on CNN's website. The news giant has featured his videos and, he says, is well aware of his day job: "They don't mind at all."

But in spring 2010, Loftis decided to dump porn to pursue his real passion: teaching. That March, he sold "World of Men" to a Canadian company, he says. And in April, he began substitute teaching in local public schools. He worked at Miami Beach High -- where "they just loved me to death," he says -- Nautilus Middle, Edison Middle, and Fienberg-Fisher K-8.

This past January, Loftis was informed he had been suspended. Another employee had told Nautilus principal Allyn Bernstein, she wrote, that Loftis "had his own personal gay website." When administrators Googled his "industry name," they found "sexually explicit pictures" of -- if our own search is any indication -- the math sub engaging in nude acrobatics with buff, furry men.

The school district cited Rule 6Gx13-4A-1.21, which demands -- mighty subjectively -- that school faculty "conduct themselves, both in their employment and in the community, in a manner that will reflect credit upon themselves and the school system."

In April, despite his protests that smut was in his past, the Florida Department of Education revoked Loftis's teaching certification.

He points out that his porn career was perfectly legal. He suspects he would have been treated differently if he had appeared in straight films. "She exposed herself as a big old homophobe," Loftis says of Bernstein, who didn't respond to requests for comment for this story.

Loftis went to the American Civil Liberties Union with his complaint, but a representative there failed to find a sympathetic lawyer. "Almost everyone has things in the their past that could be embarrassing and that should bar someone from making a living," the volunteer -- who gave his name only as Carlos -- pontificated before concluding: "Your case would be stronger if your job did not involve supervising children."

So our hero has returned to the world he once left. Last week, he was in Cuba, filming a sex scene involving twin brothers. He bragged on Twitter: "They actually like touching and having sex with each other :)"

We've embedded a terse memo from Bernstein to Loftis, summoning him to the principal's office to face his punishment.

(Sighs)It saddens me that he found his passion in teaching after having been a gay porn star. But you know what?  You can't be a gay porn star and teach in a public school.  Sorry. It just won't work. Especially not at the secondary level.Besides, it appears he just as easily returned to screwing around with a pair of twins when he lost his teaching job.  He doesn't seem to be bothered by the whole ordeal. Why should we?

Wait... let's think about this a moment. Have we not heard about parental control on our computers? Do we not set boundaries for what our children are allowed to see? Or the hours in which they are allowed to see it? My children aren't allowed on but a few sites I've screened. They are allowed on their computer between 8:30 am and 8:30 pm for up to an hour a day. (They are 13 and 9). I don't allow them to see porn of any kind-- between a man and a woman, between 2 men or between 2 women, animals.... whatever. I don't believe all porn is bad, but I do believe that my children shouldn't be exposed to it. If you're saying that your children have free range of the internet, then my response would be that you have a problem, not your children.

I can NOT believe this is even an issue, if parents are so worried that this mans past is somehow going to influence their children, or change how he had been doing his job until this became public, well I guess if your going to say that about him, let's cover all the bases now. What about priest who touched little boys and girls, how are there heads of the church left? Parents should take away any music their kids listen to that the singer is gay...could influence. Let's take away artist who's paintings might be from a gay person. Or let's take away books and movies like Harry Potter.., after all Dumbledore was gay ( as J.K. Rowling stated)   Listen, if a person does an amazing job, then let it be. If they are no threat to someone, their life should have no place in our lives. We should take care to our children receiving a proper education, and less on that persons lifestyle. I mean it's not as if he was a great teacher but sold crack, or had a meth lab in his home. Obliviously that would be a danger....just for those who are not smart enough to see my point, and take it as an option. He is NOT a danger, hell half our government are gay and we throw them out because they are, or they resign and see it as an indiscretion. Getting caught is between him and his family, being forced out we should be ashamed that it mattered in the first place. Shawn if you read these....fight and keep standing up for yourself.

The biggest surprise in this article is that the ACLU didn't jump on this like flies on shit.  I wouldn't want this man teaching my kids, so I think the school acted resposibly.

After reading every word of commentary here, and gratefully from some of my teacher colleagues, there really should be NO argument. The rule is specific. It is NOT open to interpretation. We are forced to accept certain conditions if we want to teach. We are forced to accept the notion that we are in a position of public trust and that carries a certain responsibility. While I feel some empathy for this man, I also think he made a serious error in judgment if he thought he would be able to hide a past that had received such widespread distribution.  He signed a document with a Code of Conduct and an entire list of Ethics Violations which jeopardize all teachers's jobs. As much as I'd like to have attended the EXXXOTICA exhibition in Miami Beach, I didn't, and won't as long as the taxpayers of Dade County pay my bills. It only takes ONE parent...

It's upto society and parents to teach their children to not be prejudice, be accepting, and forgive people of their pasts.  Those still young probably won't even know what sex is.  And those in high school who do are probably curious enough to look for porn elsewhere anyway. The lady who brought this up should be ashamed of herself ...if the kids didn't notice or chose to not make a big deal over it then why should she?

Pornstars aren't inherently criminals or bad people, and you should not teach your kids that.

I'm going to let ppl on here know right now that I know for a fact that there are ppl working for MDCPS that have done way worse.  A convicted murderer, drunks, drug addicts, and the list goes on.  This is one-hundred percent true.  Can you blame the guy for doing porn? Teachers don't get paid well, he did it cause he's smart and it's something he likes. Plus, it was in his past, until they fired him.

This is another form of Discrimination ... who cares what he did in a previous profession.  As long as he teaches and does his job effectively, who cares!  Does he have a Rap Sheet that indicates that he has been convicted of a Sex Crime?  If the answer is NO, then why would anyone worry about what he did in a previous profession.

As for Big Fella or anyone else that says they would not want him to teach their children or even be around them... U have the right to place your children in another school or private school.

There is a Major shortage of teachers in this country, and discriminating on this young man because of his previous profession is just wrong, unless he has done something illegal.

I pity your children from the sheltered lives they have and see that will lead them to possibly many problems in the future.

Brid

I think many of you don't provide near enough credit to your children. In my experience these days, older children (it does say he taught at a high school) care much less about these sorts of things. They care less about past prejudices and concerns and more about things that you and I never worried about when we were in school. I hesitate to say that they are more "mature" in their thinking, but this generation rolls with these types of things pretty easily.

I believe that the majority of students couldn't have cared less that he used to do porn.

Ya know if loftis was a woman he would probably still have his job there happens to be a porn star teaching in new jersey and they said as long as it doesn't interfere with her teaching and she didn't break any laws so she kept her job. That the way it should be not discriminating people for their choice of profession or sexual peference.

I think if my subs were ex-pornstars and as good looking as this man, I would've paid more attention to what he was saying.  Now they just made a big deal over what can be nothing.

There are some small-minded fucks around here.  I see nothing wrong with being in porn and then going into education.  God knows, this country is short on good teachers.  If he has a grasp  on the material and can interact with children effectively, more power to him; he's doing better than 30% of the teachers out there.

Eric

I'm not on his side at all. I'm the same age as Colin and I know that what you put on the internet stays on the internet, forever. Middle and High school kids are just discovering sex and it would have only been a matter of time before a student found his work online, and then telling everybody,it would have spread like wildfire! He should be thankful the school district stopped this before it became a real scandal, for all parties involved. We all pay for our mistakes one way or another, and it looks as if he paid for his past by losing his job. He doesn't need to be teaching young kids, college yeah, that would be fine. I really do think he was lucky he was stopped before he worked there a long time, the school district did it's job. I do not believe he was targeted for being gay,I think if some straight teacher did porn, there would have been the same result. The contract clearly states to conduct yourself a certain way,and he did not. If he really cared about teaching he would drop any lawsuit he may plan, and just move on,and remember we live in a society where our past's are just a mouse click away. He has a masters,go teach college kids,he'll be fine. I'm gay,and that's my stance on this,he was targeted because of his actions, not being gay.

This is ridiculous, I don't think the Florida legislature or the school board will change their position. It's sad that we still live in a country where ignorance, bigotry, and intolerance are still common place. Only God can judge, and we are all equal in his eyes.

But what everyone is failing to realize is that he was STILL producing and starring in porn while he was substituting so that's the reason they've done what they've done which I don't blame them because he should have known that just as sure as all these "straight" boys run to these sites for a lil bit of work and then have to reap the ridicule and embarrassment afterwards when they are exposed, just as sure he should have know tht he would be finished once his porn name or real name would be looked up.

No, there is no slippery slope here. This isn't about him being gay. There are plenty of gay teachers in Miami. This is about the actual dynamics of a classroom. I'm a teacher. If my students could easily find pictures of me in a sexually explicit context, or even if they just knew that I was a 'porn star,' that would be it. Holding class and maintaining discipline in the face of that kind of distraction would be impossible. If this were a college or even possibly a high school it might be an entirely different matter. But kids at that elementary or junior high level would have a lot of difficulty moving on from this.

Probably because those college strippers and call girls aren't on film or the web to be viewed by whoever stumbles across the images. Folks can grumble all day about the big bad unfair world, but the same thing happens to women when they get exposed for doing porn. He's lost his credibility as a teacher. He's a representative for the school district and he cast them in a negative light (intentional or not) and they cannot use him. I feel for the guy- he seems really smart and he seems to feel passoionately about teaching, but this is the downside to doing porn. He's not going to be hired to work in a k-12 school.

Yeah, because those same strippers and call girls filmed their exploits, had websites dedicated to their vaginas, and had a huge international following.

I have sex quite often and sex is not taboo at all. That's not the point. I have a problem with what he did previous to being a teacher. I do not hold porn stars in high regard. Big frickin deal. I am also a teacher.  The issue isn't how much internet supervision parents should provide; it's how much they do. If a parent complains about some information that is out there, you can't say, "Why does your child know this information?" The reality is that by 5th grade, children are internet savvy. If even one googles a teacher by name and comes up with information like that, it's over.

I get a magazine from the teacher's union.  One issue discussed being internet savvy.  Teachers have been disciplined or fired because of things on the internet that involved either sex or alcohol (either one).

Sometimes teachers are even discouraged from having Facebook profiles or posting about their personal life (with regards to things that aren't remotely sexual).  I haven't heard of anyone being fired for that, but teachers are advised to exert caution as their could be some issue. It's not about what America is coming to, but what we haven't left.  In the 19th century, in some places, there were rules about how late a public teacher could be out. At that point, teachers were often asked to resign when they married.  I believe the rationale was that pregnancy could be distracting.

Terence Ng
Terence Ng

"If my students could easily find pictures of me in a sexually explicit context, or even if they just knew that I was a 'porn star,' that would be it."

What kind of parents are allowing their elementary or junior high-age children to "easily" look up porn? And who is telling them he's a porn star? An irresponsible parent? An irresponsible faculty member? And if so, why are they telling an elementary or junior high student that? That would be completely inappropriate. What this goes to show is that some people believe that "other" people should be kept in their place. It doesn't matter that what they did was legal. It doesn't matter that plenty of the "decent" people teaching those students consume materials featuring those "other" people. It doesn't matter that it is a career they have given up in the pursuit of something else. We just can't have "those kind" teaching.  Everyone's always looking for someone else they can trod on to feel superior to.

And of course, now that he was made "unhireable" in this profession, he went back to porn, which I guess Bernstein can feel happy about, since that's where he and his kind belong. Thank God, eh?

Then put your children in an island in a christian school maybe with priest or nuns that are involved in scandals all the time and they are suppose to be very correct. or maybe what will think your children knowing that the parents go to any kind of sex sites, cheating or giving money online or buying porn just for a bit a distraction. what a double moral of the people that make judgements when their lifes are destroyed. Open your eyes and live the world in which we live, your kids are what you teach them and they follow always the good examples and who really support their lifes, i hope your soon dont be in the future a drug consumer or a bad guy that doesn't apport anything to this country. Mr Collin Oneal just wanted to change his past and he is educated, very smart and i can tell the kids and the people that isnt dumb like you really appreciatte all that he has to offer to make your kids smart.

If you see the school system of this country is making the new generation with guys that only want to spent the money of their parents or that just think in parties and be lazy at home doing nothing. Many teachers in this country don't know at least how to write, but when appear somebody smart they start to go into the private life to try to destroy all. And stop thinking that US is number one, with this kind of stupid things and the quality of the teachers that are educating your guys this country will be full of Dumb Dumb

Foolio, I imagine if you looked into the private lives of the people who do teach your children you'd find plenty of people you don't want to be around. Maybe you should stay in your basement. Mr O'Neal did nothing illegal and has not proven himself to be a threat to children. The only difference between what he did and what many other citizens do is that a camera was present.

I have every right to not want my children around a person with this sort of past. I will not apologize for living by the standards I do. Maybe I am a bit prejudiced, so what? Everybody is in one way or another.

Terence Ng

So you've basically agreed that there is no threat to your children. You just wouldn't want them to be around someone you wouldn't want to be around...because of what? You're not concerned they will harm your children. You're not concerned that anything they did would somehow affect your children. So what is it? What's the problem? Just a general sense that they're beneath you?

If you have no legitimate reason for concern ("I just don't want to be around those people"), that would be the perfect definition of prejudice.

bigriggs
bigriggs

I wouldn't want my children to be around somebody I don't want to be around. Simple as that. Not once did I say anything about doing anything to my children. You and ersatzpike did. Not once did I mention anything about molestation or rape. Again, you both brought that in to the conversation. I like the way the two of you put words in my mouth. If I had a problem with it being gay porn or was afraid for my childs sexual well being, I would have stated so. I feel the same about this case as I did about the teacher in Kentucky (I think it was Kentucky) earlier this year who had a porn past. I wouldn't want her around my children either. End of story.

justkillme
justkillme

The children I taught believed I was one of the best substitutes because I spoke proper English and also made them do their work and not slack off as most subs allowed them to. Some hated me because of the same reason...I made them do the work they were suppose to do while their teacher was away. MDCPS will go on a witch hunt to find and fire teachers for things they have done in their private lives such as going onto "adult only meeting sites" (I shall not name any to prevent further witch-hunting). The funny thing is, that the most private people with no clear backgrounds are child molesters, not ex adult entertainers. It is a sad day when I try to change my life and leave the past behind to help educate children with a level of education that most teachers do not have: a Masters Degree.

Maybe the State should strip me of my Masters and Bachelors also, and leave me to be no more than a french-fryer or prostitute. Where does this all stop?

Hey, just lock me up now for something I have not done. Is that the lesson we want to teach our children? We can go down a path we do not like and can never change and do something different? (It is also the problem with the prison system)

I am also at a loss of why something that we all do it private, that I happen to do more publicly and legally, should bar me from being around children. And if I had children should they be taken away?

Ignorance causes so many problems in this country.

Noel Leon
Noel Leon

I dont agree with everyone thinking he can molest or rape kids. It is not always true but they're are many cases of it and the world is full of sick people and its normal to feel uncomfortable with a porn star, weather gay or str8, being around your own kids because since you may not be into porn, you dont understand the others interest in it so why would that mean he wouldnt be interested in children or not be a respectable person? In these times, kids find porn, weather good or bad, we have been young and we do things behind adults backs out of curiosity, risk or to learn. we live in a society where kids are computer savy and they look up EVERYTHING. You can find this teachers full name on google and his fake name also comes up. You can look up his fake name and find that it is porn name. And there his xxx photos and videos may come up. The kids dont need to find out prior that he is a porn star nor hear about it from their parents. The kids can find out on their own. Being sad and all that he cannot pursue his love of teaching or professional career, and them being kids and all, that is why he cannot be teaching. And I understand if they dont want him in the public schools. But even if people feel like they should have second chances or can leave the porn industry behind and move into a better career...the truth is that people know that being a porn star is frowned upon and we all worry about, "if i do this what would people think of me" type of deal. And we are all well aware even at a young age that stepping into the porn industry can have negative future consequences. Just like getting a visible tattoo is a bad move if you want to seek a professional career and be taken seriously. So no sympathy for any porn star trying to change their life around. If your gonna step into that field, you better think about it first or be sure you are planning o making a living and stay in that business.

Alex Tinsley
Alex Tinsley

Aw Terence, kids find porn. Even good kids with good parents. Especially when you hit middle school age and start having a little privacy. And once one kid has found it, EVERYONE will know. I actually think it'd be less of a problem at Elementary levels because those kids don't really "get" it- in high school, they'd definitely find it.

In an ideal world, the school would deal with that by saying "Yes, Mr. Loftis was a pornographic actor. What he did was legal and consensual and there's nothing wrong with that." and maybe give the teacher a chance to answer any questions and demonstrate that it's nothing he's ashamed of. You know, be mature about it. But the fall out from angry conservative parents would be a whole lot worse than what they have to deal with by just firing him instead.

wss233
wss233

I really don't think this is the kind of social justice issue that you want to make it. Again, there are plenty of openly gay people teaching. The category of "other" people being "kept in their place," as you put it, is limited to those people who have had prolific careers in porn, who appear in lots of explicitly sexual images that are readily accessible via google image search, and who now want to teach elementary school and junior high.

I think this teacher's previous career legitimately hinders his ability to teach that age level a poses a major potential distraction for the entire school. I suppose you could be so naive as to think that this teacher's previous career could remain a secret. But if you recall, junior high is a particularly difficult place to keep explosive secrets. One student finds out and everyone knows. Fine, blame parents for failing to monitor student's internet activity 24 hours a day. But the reality is that this guy was a relatively high profile porn star. He poses no threat to children, but his previous career could easily become a distraction from which it would be impossible to recover as a teacher of that age group.

Remember, he's a star of adult entertainment. It's legitimate for adults to enjoy that material while at the same time not wanting to confront their children with it. Conversations beginning with "dad, what's a porn star?" would absolutely arise from this situation, and whatever your views on porn (fine with me!) you have to acknowledge that parents have the right to address those topics on their own terms with their children.   Not even the ACLU is taking this case. I say save your passion for social justice for the incidents of real discrimination and prejudice. This isn't one of them.
