Unmarried Couples Living Together: A Crime in Florida

jolie pitss.jpg
We guess Brad and Angelina won't be moving to Florida anytime soon.
Technically, it is illegal for unmarried couples to live together in Florida. If you shack up with your boo without putting a ring on it first, you could face a second-degree misdemeanor and a $500 fine or up to 60 days in jail. The law has been on the books since sometime in the 1800s and is rarely enforced. But no one has bothered to try to repeal it until now.

A similar law hits cheating spouses with the same crime. The laws apply only to straight people, though. For once, Florida laws sort of benefit gay couples. Not that they have the option of getting married here, unfortunately.

Now Rep. Ritch Workman, a Republican from Melbourne, wants to overturn the law, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Though there are no recent examples of the cohabitation law being enforced, a Jacksonville man was nailed for adultery in 2006.

Of course, Florida is home to prude politicians who don't like talking about sexy time, and they only recently outlawed bestiality. Gov. Rick Scott's office says repealing the law isn't a top priority, and the Sentinel notes that some social conservatives could seek to keep the law on the books. Because apparently they still have the same social values as people did in the 1800s. I guess they'd rather have you living with a same-sex cellmate in a confined space for 60 days than the apparent horror of shacking up with someone without a piece of paper saying you're married.

Why is it  that man wants to disobey Gods laws to satisfy man wrong doing, women you ought to be glad for the law because men are out to use you,if you good enough to shack with you should be good enough to marry, this law should let you know if he really loves you,Why use some of Gods commandments,if you kill, steal, fraud-lie you go to jail Why not fornication and adultery. Please God and not man, this will also will help with the money we need to keep our jobs. keep the law. I am pretty sure in the 1800's (when the law was made), it was a morality issue.

I think that this is a violation of our rights!! If I cannot live with my boyfriend then how can gay couples live together when it is agaisnt GOD in the Bible for man to lay man along with unmarried couples living together. Therefore, if I am going to be punished then the gays should be punished as well!!

If you really want to be fair then "The Gays" should also have the choice to get married in all the states a man/woman couple should. Just so we don't "violate" their right of choice. Right? Lets not be a hypocrite.

It should be legal that if Florida wants this law enforced, they should make it legal that Florida purchase a ring for whatever price the bride chooses and pay for the total price of the wedding.  I think that everyone would get married.  Also, when divorce time comes, Florida must be willing to pay for that.  How's that for "food for thought".
