Crazy Anti-Gay Group Targets Ileana Ros-Lehtinen

The National Organization for Marriage, the sometimes fumbling and controversial anti-gay marriage group, is targeting Miami-area Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in its latest publicity stunt. Last week, Ros-Lehtinen became the first and so far only Republican to sponsor a bill that would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, which furthered her credibility as a champion of gay rights. NOM is none too please and is asking its members to flood her e-mail inbox with letters.

You might remember NOM for its ridiculously dramatic "Gathering Storm" anti-gay marriage ad. You might also remember them for starting a campaign called "2M4M," which they intended to mean "2 Million for Marriage," but is common internet slang for "two men seeking another man." You might also remember them for getting involved in the 2009 special congressional election in New York's 23rd district. The organization attacked Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava, which forced her to withdraw from the race. A Democrat ended up winning the traditionally Republican seat. To be Scozzafavaed is known as attacking a Republican for supporting of gay rights.

Now NOM is attempting to Scozzafava Ros-Lehtinen. The group is now asking its members to send the most senior Republican woman serving in the House this pre-written letter:
Dear Rep. Ros-Lehtinen,

I am writing to express my disappointment and deep concern that you would abandon traditional Republican principles of marriage, family, and democratic self-government. Marriage is a bedrock of our society, and I urge you to re-consider your position on DOMA.

By co-sponsoring Rep. Nadler's bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, you are placing in jeopardy the laws of marriage in more the 40 states, threatening to impose same-sex marriage on voters across the nation who have resoundingly rejected same-sex marriage at every turn.

I urge you to drop your support for the repeal of DOMA, and to respect the voice of the American people, including the people of Florida, who have already voted to keep marriage as it has always been -- the union of a husband and wife.
Ros-Lehtinen certainly knows something about marriage. She's been married for 27 years. We're not sure if Ros-Lehtinen's support of gay marriage could cause her to face a primary challenger next year, but in a district more concerned with high unemployment and, well, Castro, we'd be surprised if she's taken down by her gay rights stance.

NOM crazy? Crazy like a fox. They have been instrumental in helping to ban "gay marriage in 30 states and counting. They have been influential in removing politicians who supported "gay marriage", such as Weprin in NY-9.  My guess is that Ros-Lehtinen will be gone after 2012.

Ileana is, indeed, terrific on LGBT issues and I am most appreciative of her support for the repeal of DOMA. However, she is still a tea drinking GOPer. She is also a signatory to the Grover Norquist pledge which prohibits her from even voting to close an egregious tax loophole. I was hoping that she would get a serious challenge from the left.

As for NOM, they are not only crazy but behind the times. A majority of Americans now support marriage equality., Furthermore, California's Prop 8 is now hanging by a thread. National marriage equality is as inevitable as was the outcome in Loving v VA.

Hey, hey, hey.....tell us what's new with dear old Alcee Hastings?  Can you tell us when he'll "go to jail, not pass go and not receive $200.00 dollars"

Maggie Gallagher has raked in a lot of money in the hate-gay-for-pay industry, so it's not surprising to see her and her partner in crime at NOM, Brian Brown (base pay: $164,000 per year!) doing whatever it takes to keep this fake issue alive. I can't imagine any person or organization advocating a public policy position that harms children, but it is what it is. It's amazing what enough money can do to a person's conscience.

Speaking of children, imagine being the child of Maggie Gallagher: you get to spend your life being the offspring of one of America's most visible bigots. Gee, thanks, Mom!

There are more issues that are pressing, folks nobody is working in the U.S., that's number #1.  If you want stay married, it's good to have a steady job, money is the biggest failures of marriages (and relationships)--- If gays want to get married, I don't care---relationships are lot of work, gays end up in divorce court too-- I know this is not the issue but let them get married, who cares, you think it's going to be end of the world.

Maggie has made a hell of a lot of money by exploiting irrational fears in our society.  A former unwed mother, speaking of the sanctity of marriage and the benefit of both mother and father role in a childs life is just amazing.

A quick internet search on the foster care system and the heavy load it bares should indicate that the war against the traditional marriage is already lost.  Divorce rates, single mothers, the billions spent by welfare for children born to unwed teens wasn't created by the gay community.  Many gay families have offered our help in adopting children and giving them the benefit of a home, love, an education and a safe environment to grow up, and we're the bad guys.

An attack on a congress person simply because they back the rights of individuals who live in their districts is nothing shy of ignorant prejudice.  Calling it anything else is just trying to put a dress on a pig, the truth is it's still a pig in a dress.  "We the people" I believe is one of this countries mantra's, not "We the straight people of this country", and as a leader she has the responsibility to represent everyone, and to protect the rights of those voting for her.

If they are so worried about protecting family values why are we funding unwed mothers having multiple children.  If they are so worried about marriage why is divorce an everyday occurrence?  Governor Arnold has children with another woman while he's married and wouldn't sign for gay marriage because of his beliefs in Marriage?

Ask a mother who lost a gay child to suicide or to a hate crime if making a gay loving relationship something that is considered second class a good idea.

Keep up the good work NOM! We're praying for a huge victory in 2012!

NOM should THANK the loving gay couples who through adoption choose to take responsibility for the thrown-away babies of irresponsible heterosexual unions. Instead they peddle cheap anti-gay prejudice packaged as concern for families, which doesn't even make sense. Shame on the fakes and haters that comprise the NOM!

NOM are deceptive snakes. Supporting marriage equality for gay people does NOT equate to rescinding marriage for heterosexuals. That is a big lie told by bigots and swallowed up by ignorant people who don't think it through.

If NOM actually care about marriage and family they will fight against divorce, and they will support gay families raising children. They mask their hate as concern about families, but that is a lie.

I always ask people opposed to marriage equality the following question and have yet to entertain a coherent answer: What possible effect does one couple's same-sex marriage have on any other couple's "traditional" marriage?

yMaggie Gallagher - creator of NOM - she protects the sanctity of marriage by having 2 illegitimate children.  And still her hubby, rumored to be black, is nowhere to be found.
