By a three to two vote, an Ecuadorian court last week upheld a $42 million verdict against journalist Emilio Palacio and three others. All work for El Universo, that nation's largest newspaper. And all were sentenced to jail for a column Palacio wrote that severely criticized the president.

In response, the newspaper published a story this morning that points out 22 other cases were held up because of President Rafael Correa's hurry to prosecute the journalists.

Riptide published the first interview with Palacio after he fled the country. What follows are selected parts of that conversation.
