Genting Reveals Plans for 10-Million-Square-Foot Resort (With Casino) on Miami Herald Site

Get ready for the idea of giant sail-looking buildings staring at you from Biscayne Bay, and perhaps more important, prepare for the idea of a casino in downtown Miami. Genting has revealed its plans for the giant resort complex it wants to plop onto the current site of the Miami Herald building -- as well as the nearby Omni Center complex, which Genting gained control of Wednesday -- and, well, nothing about this project is subtle.

The resort, designed by locally based, internationally renowned architecture firm Arquitectonica, includes a total of 10 million square feet. Four hotel towers with a total of 5,200 rooms will be joined by two residential towers with a total 1,000 units. Yeah, that's just what downtown Miami needs -- more condo units! The resort will also include a convention center, the largest ballroom in the nation, and space for more than 50 shops, restaurants, and nightclubs.

There are also two stories set aside for a casino, which as you might know, is technically prohibited by Florida law. Yet Genting, with its billions and billions of dollars, doesn't seem too deterred.

There's nothing low-key or subtle about the plans. This is the kind of project that will dominate the skyline and forever change the feel, culture, and purpose of downtown Miami. So, what do you think?

Well, I must confessthat I have encountered feelings with this idea. The first coming to my mind isthat Downtown Miami is absolutely dead at this point, I LIVE IN THE LOFT so I’mtalking from my own experience. Downtown became nothing but homeless andsuitcase stores.

I dream with aDowntown full of bohemian options, full of theater, Cinema, art… not amateuracts but a great place to see great quality stuff, (we already have theAdrienne Arsht Center having broadway, now we need our own off broadway) thething is that Downtown is not walking that way at all.

There is few awesome placeslike Soja & Pomodoro, Ceviche, Tuyo and The Kork, however, only few of usare making cultural life in downtown, we don’t have options, the thing is thatI love Art Basel, and not because the bunch of crap they sell but becausethanks to the commercial version of the Miami Art we have wynwood, maybe thegreatest movement happening in town. The point is that Major superficial developmentsusually bring great deeper and cultural movements, so yes, I would love to seethat casino, and later the anti-movement that it will generate as a consequence.

Besides, it’ll bring abunch of new employment opportunities and the value of the land will raise, thesecurity will increase and we will have way more things opening late night sowe will see downtown exposing its maximum potential.

Years ago I left Miami after fighting major battles to keep the port out Bicentennial Park and bring down I-395. But when I did, I still believed there was minimal hope for Miami. After seeing this huge blob to be built on the Miami Herald site by no other than Architectonica, that hope has all but vanished. Dan Paul had it right when he said: "If Miami thought it could get more on the tax roll, it would construct a whorehouse in Bayfront Park". However, never in my wildest dreams did I think the Miami Herald or Architectonica could stoop so low as to even surpass the city of Miami - and that´s a pretty hard thing to do. Alvah Chapman and Jim Batten, bless their soul, must be turning in their grave. Sadly, when they passed away, Miami lost the last of its principled men. What irony, to wind up with a gambling den and the innevitable whorehouses that will come with it, in the place where these great men worked so hard to keep Miami out of the gutter!

I couldn't imagine a better design or a better location for a South Florida casino resort.  The Genting corporation should be complimented for connecting all of the other key downtown Miami public spaces into one combined resort, park and performing arts center liked together through a bay-walk.

This is the most exciting project for Miami 'ever' !!! These buildings are a fabulous design perfectly suited for the Biscayne Bay waterfront. Gambling would simply compliment the area's Arts and Entertainment and also help to create much needed jobs. This project will make Downtown Miami a world class destination of its own, with the spill-over extending to all the other wonderful parts that make up Miami and Miami Beach.

I work down-town and if they were to build something like that here it would make me feel like I'm in Dubai and I really want to feel in MIAMI.

We get rid of history to compete with other nations to win the prize for the most extravagant or weird building.

If I were visiting a  psychiatrist, and he was,  I would say that the pictures of this project look like a camel in front of a Saguaro cactus; that's what I see.

Genting loves Miami. They are used to corrupt third world countries. Genting is rumored to finance terrorists. Corrupt Miami politicians and lobbyists will make them feel right at home.

What a way to give another jolt to Greater Miami's real estate market and job economy!  As it is condos in the Miami and Miami Beach and South of Fifth neighborhoods are experiencing near-record sales prices for several premier luxury waterfront condominiums. I can only imagine when completed how this project will further boost Southeast Florida's status and record-breaking condo sales. One bigger picture is how this will increase our real estate market value to international/foreign buyers! If you build it, they will come and buy, and the possibilities are endless! http://www.thekleerteam.com/bl...

It is spectacular!!!!  This is just what Miami needs it will radically change tourism in this city for the better!  Unfortunately (Mayor Alvarez and the Funky Bunch) didnt stick that stadium I am paying for in DT where it should have been.

The project looks great especially the huge swimming pool. The problem is if it is all funded by taking rent money from poor retirees.

Genting is buying lobbyists and elected officials to get gambling.

How did Genting get so much money?

Do it!  This would be great for Miami.  We need a large scale project like this to help turn around our unemployment rate.  Not only that, the amount of people it takes to keep a casino and hotel of that magnitude functional and above par is tremendous.  This would help boost tourism, and bring the unemployment rate down.  Might also help property values.  Anybody who opposes this hasn't been downtown lately, it's a dump.

The drawings look great. Hopefully elected officials will not allow gambling on the site.

Imagine Atlantic City on the Bay? Thousands of buses full of blue haired retirees arriving hourly to lose their fixed income checks.

Seriously speaking, that is one thing I cannot understand about Cubans; they cook it at home and when they go out, they always end up at a Cuban restaurant.  Granted the food is good; I know if personally since my parents lived in Cuba for many years before Castro, so I am not critizising, my Cuban friends say "it's the best", but I need variety.
