"Occupy Miami" Invades Bayfront Park Tomorrow: 2003 FTAA Protest All Over Again?

Brace yourself for waves of socially responsible hipsters.

"Occupy Miami" -- a protest against corporate greed modeled after the two-week sit-in currently clogging Wall Street in New York -- will take over Bayfront Park tomorrow.

But how will our soulless city respond? And will Miami Police bring out the storm troops like they did eight years ago?

According to its Facebook page, "Occupy Miami" protesters will meet at the Torch of Friendship tomorrow in Bayfront Park at 1:30 p.m. to rail against inequality and the corporate takeover of politics.

Amen, sister.

The movement is modeled after "Occupy Wall Street," which got national media attention last weekend when NYPD maced a group of female protesters:

The real question is how Miami PD will respond to the sight of perhaps thousands of protesters.

After all, Miami's finest went berserk during the 2003 protest against the Free Trade Area of the Americas. The shit was so heavy that we even released our own Protest Survival Guide.

But the cops didn't take our advice. Instead, police chief John Timoney deployed hundreds of SWAT troops who promptly used percussion grenades, tear gas, and rubber bullets. Hundreds of demonstrators were injured and about 230 were arrested.

The protest was a black eye for the Miami, which wasted $23 million in heavy-handed security measures only to have to pay nearly $500,000 ($160K from the city, $300K from the county) in compensation to 20 protesters.

Hopefully, we won't see anything like that tomorrow. Just Chacos, dreadlocks, and calls for justice.

UPDATE: Daniel Lopez, one of the protest's organizers, says he expects a couple hundred people tomorrow but expects the number to grow.

"The plan for bayfront is to meet in person and discuss the 'occupation'. The camp out will begin at a later date," Lopez says. "The police are a concern of mine but we are currently seeking the legal procedures to make this 100% legit. We are a peaceful, non violent moment."

Below, a poster for the protest:

Ruin the party? These people aren't worried about us. They're not worried about anything. They're rich. No matter what happens, these people just keep applauding.

Crowed of People equalsto a Crowed of Cattle. No shepherd?

Did you seriously call these people "...socially responsible hipsters..."? I can not imagine what would encourage you to belittle these protesters in such a manner. Those taking part in these protests cover generational, racial, political and gender divides like no other movement alive in America.Michael Miller, you should be ashamed of yourself. Consider the job market for journalists-what is your degree and experience worth? 2.5 cents per word? Or is the market the reason you've spun this as you have? Is the problem that you don't want that black mark showing you've sided with those who want you to earn a decent wage, want you to be able to actually write with freedom again? To the people reading this, don't be fooled by the spin coming out of the media. Visit  http://wearethe99percent.tumbl...  and https://occupywallst.org/  to learn what this movement is really about.

Pretty silly. No protest will stop corporations, only way to stop them is stop giving them money.  Just another dirty hipsters meeting. I miss the hippies now, at least they didnt smell as bad as a hipster.

I fully support this protest and i'll probably be there, but a V for Vendetta quote? come on we can do better than that... that's just kind of silly.

Occupy Bayfront Park?  I'm not sure that accomplishes anything.  Maybe occupy a downtown drawbridge at rush hour: you'd simultaneously block land and water traffic.

Good luck!

So how many members of this movement work for large corporations?  Just curious

. is a great cause or meeting ,i wish for the best results for the people that believe in something , so important these days . But you can see the way people already respond in comments , even if they are police officers , people from the cause or real people . i wish the next REAL STRONG revolution is not against corporations and money but to promote to educate our people , the world , how to start actually caring for ourselves first as human beings , there is no respect on the streets , no caring on the expressway and there s no love on the people . The responsible there are no corporations , even when everything is related to the everything .  A tree starts with a seed .

This article is a total exaggeration! What's going to be held tomorrow at Bayfront Park is an assembly to plan a protest action. We're not occupying anything yet!!

@ sir sausage : pls what does that , have to do with anything - don't try to keep people attention in a wrong way , trying to confuse them . you can still have an opinion about things even if you work for them . i work for a corporation , mostly all do , but that has nothing to do with trying to make them better or just trying to have the world not that contaminated about corporations  . And i am saying this even when i am not part or even agree with this movement 100 % . Please ! open your mind

[ So how many members of this movement work for large corporations?  Just curious ] : that is something that hurts the future of this world , a mind like yours . . . pls do us a favor and start thinking . Not just mere silly  reacting .

Too bad you are too stupid to realize that this "little getty" is for your benefit also.

Your mind might not be able to handle such a thought right now but maybe in a few months or a few years from now you will finally "get it".

Yes of course, because "flow of traffic" is the first thing on the list of concerns and why the gathering is occurring in the first place. I am sure the protesters do not want any attention given to them, so they will just quietly gather and just have a picnic and a good laugh.

Remain status quo and enjoy your commerce and current "flow"

So far, you are both missing the point.  We are gathering in the name of a future that works for many more.   We have to really work harder and longer for a future that will work for everyone.  Your petty little knit picking is only the scab that keeps getting scratched off..;it will fester and become another cancer...........We are working together to eradicate the cancers that already exist in all of the antiquated systems that run this out of date Corporation USA.  Be kind.  Be aware and be helpful, always.  We are all members of the same DNA club.

Silly reacting?  Confusing people?  Er no.  It was a valid question.

I just wanted to know how many people who were a part of this movement just sucked it up and got a 9 to 5 job at a big corporation.

Allow me to live my life in peace and i'll do the same for you !!  how about that...let me continue to be ignorant...protest...go i'm all for it...just don't bother people and don't get roudy when others dissagree.  its real simple.

Thank you for your that
Thank you for your that

Dear Glass Slipper: Did you think you may be too stupid to "get" how many things actually the government does for you benefit? Go ahead and throw all the bad stuff at them (e.g. unemployment). When somebody throws your own bad stuff at you (e.g. traffic disruption or noise) just call them "blind". You know better, right? All they need to do is to cope with all the downsides of your "necessary protest", and in the end they will realize all the great benefits they are actually getting with it, and will of course feel the need to thank you for it. Unless of course they are simply too blind.

Jdjr107
Jdjr107

Perfect example of how you guys react when others disagree.  Violence; calling me stupid is a prime example.  I DON'T CARE FOR YOUR FIGHT.  I will fight my own battles.  MY WAY.  all I'm saying is respect...do you need me to write this in Spanish or is it just your grammar that's a bit off.

Hate to burst your bubble but the exaggerated real estate market was not just corporations or politics.  Well, yes, they helped facilitate with the loans being easier to obtain.  However, lets not forget the millions of Americans who thought they were Trump and over extended themselves by purchasing $450K homes making $35K a year.

ok - out of 100 % of the people there are 59.73 % who work 9 to 5 for a big corporation [ let s say that ] , does this brings any understanding to the world ? no , just an answer to something that has nothing to do with the reason of " this meeting " . So let s say you got your answer , what is your next step ? what is the teaching ? what are you looking for pointing that [ even if a real situation ] . Because you were born in a family of doctors can t you try to set better standards in medical insurances that rip of people , while you still live in your home ? unfurl pls , will do great to you .

Bodhidhoc
Bodhidhoc

Well, the whole point of civil disobedience is to bother people, the people who are otherwise ignorant of the situation, apathetic about it, or otherwise unaware. The point is to take to the streets, non-violently loose your frustrations and shake things up; to taste the exhilarating freedom that comes with calling out and shouting down injustice; to disrupt business as usual until there is no one that can continue to ignore the elephant in the room. But I agree, nothing has to get rowdy. The best protests are funny and peaceful

Violence- exertion of PHYSICAL force so as to injure or abuse. I believe the word you're trying to find is Insult. You exhibit an exemplary selfless attitude, and understanding of the English language to boot.

Default? Let's not forget Clinton laying in bed with Chinaand paving that road, just saying.  And, as far as banks, everyone's beloved Messiah(Obama) is no better either in his treatment of them.  Again, just saying.  I know, everything is Bush's fault.  Should I quote, Lincoln?

nanook5
nanook5

that'd be all well in good except the only cure for that is default and Bush stole that right from homeowners in 2005 and then again with the TARP bailouts. 3 years now of the banks not dying & all we get is suffering. it's time to turn the tables.
