The Miami Jets Football Team? Rich New Yorkers and the Miami Police Department Just Made it a Reality

The hate that burns between the fan bases of the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins is perhaps some of hottest in all of sports. So we really don't know what to make of the fact that a youth football team sponsored by the Miami Police Department and the local Police Athletic League will be suiting up in green and calling themselves the Jets. The reason? Some rich New Yorkers gave the PAL $70,000 on the condition that team became a mini-Gang Green.

Here's the press release issued by MPD spokesman Kenia Reyes:

THE JETS ARE IN TOWN

Miami has a new football team and they are called the JETS. No, not the ones from New York. These are a bit shorter, a tad younger, and empowered by the City of Miami Police Department's Police Athletic League (PAL). The reason for green uniforms and the name JETS? Well let's just say there are more than 70,000 reasons. Some big ticket sponsors came to town, and in an effort to help out these youngsters of meager means and provide the underprivileged with a safe place to play, these generous New Yorkers reached in and pulled out a check and purchased naming rights for the team.

We are asking for you to come out and support the MPD/PAL- JETS this weekend at Curtis Park 1901 N.W. 24 Avenue. .

The first game is scheduled for: Friday, September 2, 2011, featuring the 70 lbs starting at 7:00 PM. Followed by the 80 lbs. at 8:30 PM.

Games will continue on Saturday at 10:00 AM, followed by a sponsorship presentation at 11:45 AM. The last game will take place at 2:00 PM.

Come out and support our youth.

We'd like to pretend we're taking the high road here and holding back our snark because, well, after all it's for a good cause, but really we're almost speechless.

We just wonder if these same benefactors are also sponsoring a little league teams somewhere in the Boston that is forced to wear pinstripes and call themselves the Yankees.

Meanwhile, we're collecting money to buy the naming rights to a Cleveland youth basketball team.
