X Factor Contestant Calls Show a "Fraud," Says Simon Cowell Was an Angry Prick at Miami Audition

Charlise Uribe and Melody Haughn say X Factor distorted their voices and insulted them.
When Simon Cowell's new show, The X Factor, aired last week, Charlese Uribe already knew what would happen. Earlier this summer, she and her then-15-year-old daughter Melody Haughn had driven to Miami from their home in Pembroke Pines only to get cut after a week of brutal tryouts.

But when Uribe tuned in last Thursday, her three seconds of fame were worse than she could have imagined. She claims the show "distorted" her voice and edited footage in order to justify Cowell's personal insult about Uribe's divorce.

"How low is Simon Cowell willing to go to get the ratings he wants for this show he's invested millions of dollars into?" Uribe asks.

Of course, Cowell owes his career to being a snarky asshole. He has already been sued once for X Factor.

Yet Uribe insists she isn't a sore loser. She feels set up by the controversy-fueled, ratings-obsessed show.

In last week's Miami auditions episode, Uribe and Haughn appear only for a few seconds. Uribe breaks into "Barracuda" by '70s rock band Heart before Cowell seems to cut the performance short.

"I can understand, I think, why your marriage broke up," he says. "If I was living in a house with you two screaming at the top of your lungs." The camera cuts to Haughn with tears in her eyes and Uribe's brother freaking out backstage.

The online vitriol began almost instantly. Rolling Stone called Uribe and Haughn "an obese, goth-y mother/daughter duo."

"I've heard a cat sing better when their tail was caught in an engine," chimed in another commenter. "It was horrid, and so are they."

But Uribe says a video shot by a family friend shows what really happened:

"That's not my voice [in the episode]," Uribe says. "That's not how I sounded. And the proof is in the video and the audience clapping, screaming, and giving a standing audition.

"On TV, they made it seem like I just started singing and they immediately cut us off. But Simon asked us before the audition if my daughter's father and I were still together, and I said no," Uribe explains. "I think that is completely irrelevant to our singing competition."

Uribe says it was the nasty joke blaming her and her daughter's singing for her divorce, not just their elimination, that pissed off her brother.

"I think Simon owes my daughter an apology," she says.

"We signed a waiver saying that they can use all the footage they want to make fun of us," Uribe admits. She also says backstage coaches encouraged contestants to fight with Cowell, supposedly to improve their chances but really just to make for better TV.

"I really want to get this story out, to prove that the X Factor is a fraud," she says. "They aren't making a truthful, honest show, and the public really has a right to know that they too are being lied to and manipulated."

If she wasn't a sore loser, then this article would not exist.  The song choice was horrible.  Singing karaoke doesn't make you a great singer.  STFU.

OMG STFU please....The amount of sound engineering could fix you. You still sounded terrible. sorry but seriously.....get over it.

thats when u have to stand up to audition. It also seams the brother is the father of the daughter if you read on. Got to love these people. They were that good, they had to change there voice and distorted there heads on the video. There heads were distorted years ago

If you are watching X Factor tonight or tomorrow night, jump on Judge It Live and do your own live ratings and compare yours to everyone else's in real time.  It's fun stuff.

THANK YOU Michael Miller for doing this story! I really appreciate it & love it!

And THANK YOU Alex C. in these comments! So you were actually there in person in the audience who says the audience really DID like us! It's all on video (Which was taken with a cell phone, lol) but to have someone I don't know, who was actually there in person back up my story is worth it's weight in gold, so I thank you so much! ;-)

Here's 2 more articles, in the Palm Beach Pulse from a reporter who has actually heard us sing live before.

Like I said in my 1st comment, just go to our youtube page & view our other videos, if you really think from watching the 3 secons clip that was distorted & broadcast on TV, that we can't sing, go view our other videos. Proof is in the pudding! http://www.youtube.com/sflorid...

Hey guys, this is the Mother in the article! Hello everyone!

I would like to answer some of your comments & explain what really happened! You are all welcome to go to our youtube page & see our other videos, proving that we do sing good too! It's http://www.youtube.com/sflorid... or just look up the name sfloridasinger in the search box.

What many people don't understand (assumption based on comments I have read) is that this is TV & things are not always as they seem on TV & things are manipulated & edited to serve the show's purpose! WE know that, now we want the public to realize it as well.

Let me help you understand what happened a little bit more:

#1 We didn't pick the name. A girl at the X Factor picked it & gave it to us, so we used what they gave us.

#2 I'm not 300 lbs. I'm 185 lbs. & 5'6" tall. Cameras make you look bigger than you really are. Is that FAT? Yes! Am I over 300 lbs though? NO. But.... since when does weight have anything to do with being a good singer? One of the best singers in the world was huge (Pavarotti!) so, enough about the weight... that's childish & so high school! Big deal. I;m overweight, so is 1/2 of America! Grow up. And I saw in one article, where they assumed we were gothic? That's the farthest from the truth. LOL! I don't even know anything about the "Gothic" lifestyle! We go to church on Sunday & I sing in the worship team!

#3 Melody, (Just turned 16 yrs old) my daughter, did go to (2 wks later) to audition in SC for American Idol & made it to the top 125 out of 10,000 ppl. You will probably see her on AI in January! She has an amazing career in front of her (She's already been offered a record deal!) & you'll be seeing her more.... soon. ;-)

4# After the show aired, it was only THEN that everyone realized that the 3 sec clip of me singing on TV was digitally distorted. If you REALLY LISTEN to the two videos of that exact same note, you can hear (depending on how good your speakers are) the difference. It's true! And the video was taken very far away with a cell phone's camera & it STILL sounds good on a cell phone! Imagine how good it sounded live! Thank GOD we have that video so we can show the world that the show is a fraud. If they didn't want us, they should have never distorted my voice, they should have just aired it the way I sang it & simply said that we're not what they wanted. IF you look at the video & listen & watch the audience's reaction to us, you would have seen that they LOVED us. 5,000 ppl can't be wrong! Yes, there were 5,000 ppl in the arena audience that night & people were boo'ing the judges, yelling, clapping, screaming for us, chanting "One more song" and we even got some people who gave us a standing ovation! I assure you that the audience DID NOT react that way to the ones they thought were not good!

#5, I am NOT a soar loser. I have been in this business since I was a baby! I have won & lost throughout my 39 yrs & I am used to the business. I did my very first commercial when I was only 11 mths old & had a full time career as a child, with several agents & a personal manager & I have proof also of that if anyone wants it. Infact, when I was 8 yrs old, I auditioned for the role of ANNIE in the Movie & out of thousands & thousands of little girls they auditioned for the lead role, I made it down tot he final 7! I did not get the role, and I was estatic that I had just made it that far. So this is NOT about losing. We took it with so much grace & did not argue or complain or fight back with the judges at all. They tried so hard to throw insults at us left & right (It's on my youtube video of the entire audition which wasn't aired on TV) but we refused to beg, cry, argue or yell back. We KNOW that you win some & you lose some & it's OK! Life moves forward & you keep going! Like I used to sing as a child "The sun will come out tomorrow" (From Annie) ;-)

#6 I agree, I do, with the fact that we probably should have auditioned seperately & with a different song. We actually had different songs but let me tell you how it works, when we got there, they told us we couldn't sing ANY of the songs we wanted to sing & so we had no choice at the last min. to go with Barracuda, which is a song we know but wouldn't have picked for this!

#7 We thought (& the producers on the show LOVED & ENCOURAGED the Mother/Daughter thing) that it would at least get us on TV & it did. We knew it wouldn't get us to Hollywood, b/c Simon is looking for someone who is going to make him the most $$$ & I agree, there's not a lot of $$$ with another Mother/Daughter group like THE JUDDS. My hope was that they would air my Daughter singing & that someone out there would want to sign her & I then, would take a step back & let her spread her wings & fly! I'm extremely supportive of her. She's won SO MANY singing competitions in SFL & I have always supported her & been there for her every step of the way. We have never sang together in a singing competition before this.

Any questions? Feel free to ask me in an email here on Facebook! I'm open to talking to anyone about our experience & what REALLY happened backstage & on the show. There's so much that the TV audience doesn't know.

Their audition lasted 10 minutes. What did they expect? That they will air all 10 minutes to make it "fair"? Of course it's edited and everybody knows it. Other than that, they were out of tune as soloists and had no harmonies when they sang together. Get real!

If you are going to look like Susan Boyle (only fatter) and Susan Boyle Jr., you better be able to sing like her, and these women can't.

The daughter has a ton of potential if her mother would stop feeding her the way that she eats. Just cause you've resorted to weighing 300 lbs doesn't mean you need to ruin your daughter's life....

This is actually true! I remember seeing these girls perform. They were at the night audition that Wednesday from 6-10. The crowd was cheering for both of them. The comments were altered as well. They said if both of them had entered individually (the mom for adults-individual and the daughter for teens-individual), they would have both passed, but as a group they had work to do. '

Their rendition of Heart's Barracuda was amazing and I was honestly disappointed they didn't pass. If these girls read this, know I'm on your side!

Case closed, quit complaining!

If these people don't realize that reality TV is all about editing and manipulating clips to make you sound like your saying something out of context, then they just need to stay at home.  The truth is their act was horrible.  Then they come out and say that the Audience was cheering.  All I could hear was their loud ass family.  You want me to take someone seriously who says "standing audition"?  Give me a break.  Simon Cowell has led the way for some of the greatest undiscovered talent in America, These people do not fall into that category.  They might be great at karaoke night, but that is all.

I have to admit I was a little skeptical of their talent, and I thought that guy with the yellow shirt was nuts for throwing a tantrum.

After watching the second video, I could see how they could feel cheated. They have pretty good voices. The show must have gotten the only part that was off key and cut off the good part.

Reality is that we live in a sensationalist, shallow society and the only way we will let people that don't fill our ideas of perfection in to spotlight is either to make fun of them (like this show) or to make victims of them (TLC, The Biggest Loser).

(Kanye West shrug)

I think she meant standing ovation.

The Judds (Naomi & Wynonna) are the only mother/daughter sensations that I know about.  This family had to have known...1 - what these shows consist of (high ratings), 2 - that the shows are edited, and 3 - they can not say that they haven't seen Simon in action before (he does sugar-coat a thing; if you've bad, you ain't staying around).  They tried their best, but their best wasn't good enough!!!  Period!
