Jacory Harris Deserves Credit and an Apology For Racially Biased Sportswriting

Luther "Luke" Campbell, the man whose booty-shaking madness made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech, gets as nasty as he wants to be for Miami New Times. This week, Campbell wonders when Jacory Harris will get his due.

The sports media in South Florida is really one-sided. None of the sports talk show hosts -- Joe Rose, Jorge Sedano, and Sid Rosenberg -- has anything to say about University of Miami quarterback Jacory Harris.

Now that he is performing well, these guys should give him his due. They can't deal with a young African-American doing an excellent job. Last year and before this season began, I read a lot of articles and blogs that claimed all the players whom former head coach Randy Shannon had recruited from Miami Northwestern High School were failures. That's a bunch of BS.

Those seven kids will play in the NFL when they leave school. Just look at the magic that Harris is creating with his former Northwestern teammate Tommy Streeter, a phenom at wide receiver whose time at the University of Miami was wasted by the previous offensive coordinator, Mark Whipple. Indeed, Whipple is the reason Harris played so poorly prior to this year. But you never heard the Roses, Rosenbergs, and Sedanos criticize Whipple with the tenacity they exhibited when going after Harris and Shannon.

UM alum Michael Irvin had a message for the media: If you're going to criticize me, praise me with the same intensity. I want see them praise Harris with the same force they used to vilify him. South Florida's sports reporters need to wake up. Jacory Harris deserves the type of credit that ESPN is giving San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, who is white.

Everyone wrote Smith off before Jim Harbaugh became his coach this year. Now the young man is leading a 5-1 team and finally living up to expectations. Harris deserves the same type of coverage. But he won't get it because the lily-white sports pundits don't want to see kids like him succeed. To them, black quarterbacks are inept. Sportswriters and talking heads have a tendency to make African-American athletes the villains.

It doesn't help that there are only a token number of black sports journalists in the industry. Heck, there are no African-American sportswriters at the Miami Herald, Sun-Sentinel, or Palm Beach Post covering the Hurricanes or Dolphins, with the exception of Omar Kelly. Just look at how the media has treated Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano.

He has gone 7-9 the past two seasons, but he always got a pass because he's a "nice guy." No one was calling for his head until the Dolphins started the season 0-4. It is a double standard I find repulsive.

None of you idiots no anything about football that are commenting on this blog. Jacory Harris is playing well this season and still one of the Top QB's in all of college football you can look at INT to Touchdown Ratio all you want that means nothing to play at the next level. Go take a look at the Miami Dolphins hero Dan Marino College Career Stats and compare them to Jacory and look what you get the same. I can speak on football not only played high school but college also. Morris isnt a better QB then Jacory that's why he isn't starting two different coaching staff see the samething Jacory is better. So of you need to grow up an realize talent when you see it. Last year some of the players were in a F up situation that's why they weren't able to perform at there best. Miami win the ACC this year with J12 and watch how many of you same doubters will be praising him.. By the way check out the last few lines it clearly says with the exceptation of Omar Kelly so before all of you start commenting leaving unessary comments please read the article very carefully... Canes are back and will contend for the ACC Championship!!

Oh Uncle Luke
Oh Uncle Luke

The TD: INT ratio means he A. doesn't make good reads and B. doesn't make good decisions. THAT means A LOT to play at the next level.

Also, Morris shouldn't be better than Jacory, he was a true freshman last year and he's a true sophomore this year. The fact that they were competing and it was a tight battle is a knock on jacory (a senior) or  plus for morris.

This is the problem with todays society Luke; you have such low expectations for your own race that when he has marginal success you expect the praise to fall from the sky. Jacory has been one of the worst QB's statistically in college football. This staff came in and simplified things for him and made him a game manager. They have had marginal success and are only   4-3 today Luke. He's been average Luke. This is the same Evil White Media that has chased out tons of white QB's from the Dolphins and Canes over the last decade. This is the same white media who made Robert Marve into a quitter.....not Jacory.

Lets look at the Northwestern 7 you speak of.

Ben Jones-Does he still play for the U?-Not an NFL playerKendal Thompkins-Has barely seen the field-Not an NFL prospectJacory Harris-No arm Strength-Maybe a practice squad guy for a couple years.Brandon Washington-Will be given a look at the next levelTommy Streeter-Will be given a shot because of size and speed.Aldarius Johnson-Not an NFL player-Cut from teamMarcus Forston-Bust of a player-Not an NFL playerSean Spence-Should be a decent NFL guy

Thats 3 guys Luke that will be given a shot to succeed in the NFL. Stop with the race card please. I compare the 2008 recruiting class to Obama. So much promise and charisma. Yet a total failure on almost all accounts.

Mr. Campbell bloody well SPEAKS TRUTH to POWER!  Matter of fact, it's easy to see that SUBTLE and or BLUNT racism is ALIVE and WELL in Pax Americana as well as SoFla. Eh.

Case in point. The extreme hatred directed towards Jacory Harris was relatively due to racism and or bigotry. No if's, and's or may be's.

Yes and the stunt pulled by that narcissist whoo I hope stay locked up added to the hatred and pressure put on Jacory these are very young people who were dece ived by old evil bastards who tool advantage of their youthfullness by buying them cheap drinks alledgely. And all the sad part is all of these haters fueled up the fire of their hate by constantly speaking openly and ugly about their hate which can mentally breakdown any quarterback who is expected to lead a teamwith a bunch of fans chanting his failure like a bunch of evil warlocks.Po

Harris will be the lone NW recruit from 2007 not playing in the NFL (inside 3 years). The fact is he's just an average QB at this level. His mechanics are flawed. His decision making and ability to progress his reads are sub-par. All his success at Miami is negated by his total number of INT's and the fact that he has regressed since high school, rather than progress.

This has nothing to do with race either. Perhaps some of the blame can be put on the previous coaching staff (as evident by Sam Shields ability to  progress once leaving the U). However, the QB position is more dynamic than any other position on the field because the QB is the sum of so many moving parts. It's 40% physical and 60% mental. Harris just does not have the mental makeup at the college level and beyond. Regardless of the system, Harris made decisions to throw balls that should not have been thrown. That is his biggest flaw.

Cam Netwon had plenty of praise.. He's black.. Michael Vick had plenty of praise..He's black.. David Gerard had plenty of praise.. He's black.. Vince Young had plenty of praise.. He's black..

Ken Dorsey was white and lead the U to almost 2 perfect back-to-back seasons and a National Championship. He couldn't hack it in the pro's.. Tim Tebow can walk on water, bu he sure as hell can't throw on grass.. He won't hack it in the pro's.. It has nothing to do with skin color. It has to do with the ability to play the position at every level. Tebow was a great college QB. The kid flat out sucks in the pro's.. Harris is nothing more than an average QB once you put him above high school level. Black.. white.. doesn't matter.. It's the skill at which the position is played which determines the measurables..

I suggest you hop off that soap box.. Perhaps you're the racist Luke... Ever heard of the term "reverse racism" ???

Oh Uncle Luke
Oh Uncle Luke

Streeter was  on the bench because of Randy Shannon, not Mark Whipple.  Our offense under whipple could have been much better, if not for jacory's penchant for tossing deep balls into double and triple  coverage.

As far as this year, we shouldn't go crazy praising harris for doing what he's supposed to do. He's playing well, but he's not lighting the world on fire either. Well i guess he is playing great when you compare it to his previous performances. If he was pumping it out andrew luck style, and not getting any praise, it'd be a different story.  Let's be happy that a lot more of his boneheaded throws are being dropped this year than in previous years and that we have a beastly running game that helps a ton.

Misco Jones

Jacory Harris to the NFL? That's laughable. He can't even throw 40 yards. Harris is doing better because of more short-passing playcalls by Jedd Fisch, not because he has NFL-worthy talent.  Next time, write your blog when you're sober, Luke.

he doesn't have a gun, but he's thrown it over 50 yards in games a number of times.  He has plenty of real faults that can be brought up.

and Jacory ain't great, but look at some of the guys starting at QB or in the NFL as back ups.  Wouldn't surprise me if he starts at some point - even if briefly.

You are so misinformed its not even funny. Just do South Florida, Canes fans, and the world a favor and stop writing garbage like this.

Zlnelsonirc

He's not exactly setting the world on fire. He's a senior he should have it figured out by now. He's got a decent running game and stellar recievers that mismatch  almost all defenders. He's managing the game and cut down on his turnovers. mean time he's still under throwing guys . he's doing a nice job but not enough to crown

This is some type of record for factual errors in one article.

San Francisco is undefeated?

Omar Kelly, and David J. Neal are white?

it goes on and on.

Luke, GET OVER IT...all you do is play the race card it's played out and stupid, his African American head coach couldn't develop ANY of the players not only the NW kids, you're so ridiculous all your articles are the same thing just a different day.

Jabari Morris

Like I said on Twitter, you must have never heard of Omar Kelly or Shandel Richardson. Luke, you need to be more careful when making blanket statements like that. They tend to make you look very bad. Sedano, on more than one occasion, has defended Harris.

JMA_1966
JMA_1966

Luke's just had a bad week after Belen's O pushed his D around in the second half.  Let's give him some slack! LOL(Seriously though, Jacory has been playing much more like what we saw when he was at NW and his first season playing for the U.  The young man deserves a ton of credit for never losing the faith)That said, as noted by others here, Joe Rose was a staunch defender of Randy Shannon pretty much right 'til the end - and has ripped Sparano and Ireland so I think the accusation against Joe Rose, Sid and others is misguided at best.

Luke, I love you but you are dead wrong on most of this article. If anyone is to blame for the NW players not developing its Randy Shannon! He was the man in charge. Are you trying to tell me he didnt notice they were not developing. He hired Whipple, and the other coaches. As far as no black sports reporters, I think Omar Kelly is black, and he is down here. Not alot of black writers is a social problem, not racism.

Luke,

I always like hearing you on the radio but you are way off base on this. Sedano (the only one you mentioned that I listen to) has praised Jacory recently. He even defended him when Jacory didn't deserve any defense. You can say whatever you want about the previous coaching staff but ultimately Jacory made awful decisions and threw awful passes. I still think he's a terrible QB and Morris should be starting but that's a different discussion.

"Heck, there are no African-American sportswriters at the Miami Herald, Sun-Sentinel, or Palm Beach Post covering the Hurricanes or Dolphins."

So, when did Omar Kelly become white? In case you didn't know, Omar is a African American who used to cover the Canes and now covers the Miami Dolphins for the Sun Sentinel.

Luther, you're a joke at times and it's the reason no one takes you serious anymore. Heck, I'm sure most people in your community see you as a joke but stay quiet because you're constantly "helping" the community.

You're an idiot Luther. Joe rose has been a Shannon fan, and sid is just a retarded new yorker that doesn't deserve a show in south florida.
