Rina on Verge of Category 3, Miami Now in Possible Path

​Slowly moving but quickly strengthening Hurricane Rina is expected to become a Category 3 storm sometime within the next 24 hours as it trudges toward Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. However, the five-day projections have the storm taking a hard right turn later this week, and Miami is now within its possible path. The good news is if the storm does brush South Florida, it's likely to have weakened considerably.

Here's the five-day forecast from Weather Underground:

​At least one computer model has Rina cutting a path straight through South Florida.

Though, at this point the storm's path is mostly an educated guessing game.

"There is great uncertainty as to where Rina will be located by the weekend," National Hurricane Center analyst Richard Pasch said in a report this morning.

Forecasters expect Rina to weaken as it enters the Gulf of Mexico. A possible cold front could help the storm retain some of its strength and send it on a path toward Florida early next week.

As for the weather this weekend, Weather Underground predicts a 30 percent chance of rain Friday, a 60 percent chance Saturday, and a 30 percent chance Sunday. (Make sure your Halloween costume is water-resistant.)
