Romney and Cain Basically Tied in Florida, But Romney Does Better Against Obama

​It's like Republican voters don't know what's good for them. Poll after poll shows that Mitt Romney is the most viable candidate against Barack Obama, but they keep jumping around to the more conservative icon of the moment.

The latest poll of Florida voters from NBC News and Marist [PDF] shows that Romeny and Cain are statistically tied, but Romney does much better against Obama. Though, so far no Republican candidate is actually polling higher than the president.

Here's the latest poll numbers:

​Romney leads by one point among a wider swath of Republicans, but Cain leads by one points among likely voters. Both leads are within a percentage of error, so the two are basically tied no matter which way you cut this particular pizza.

Here's the thing: Obama leads Romney only 46 to 44, a statistical tie. Obama leads Cain with a much larger 47-41 split. This even as only 41 percent of Floridians say they approve of the president's job performance.

If the potential GOP field was widdled down to just Romney, Cain and Rick Perry, Romney leads Cain 40-37. They're tied at 40 among likely voters.

Another interesting survey question that may be nagging Romney: 44 percent of Florida Republicans don't consider Mormons to be Christians.
