Jeffrey Godfrey Gets His Release From the University of Central Florida

The former star quarterback from Miami Central Senior High who broke Jacory Harris' passing record, is leaving the University of Central Florida after following his breakout freshman season with a sophomore slump.

Jeffrey Godfrey, who had requested a release from his scholarship, can transfer to any school that is not in the Conference USA or the Big East, says Miami New Times columnist Luther Campbell, who mentored Godfrey when the kid played little league football and starred at Miami Central, where he passed for more than 7,000 yards.

"I just got off the phone with his dad," Campbell says. "He is the process of finishing up the semester and looking at other schools. He would prefer to come to the University of Miami. The question is would Al Golden want him?"

Last year, Godfrey led the UCF Knights to a Conference USA championship and a Liberty Bowl win over Georgia. But this season, the team posted a 5-7 record and Godfrey struggled with Coach George O'Leary's demands to stay in the pocket instead of scrambling under pressure. He was inconsistent leading the offense.

The UCF athletic program was also rocked by scandal. Miami native and former Orange Bowl committee executive Keith Tribble resigned as the school's athletic director following allegations that he violated NCAA rules when he attempted to provide an "improper inducement to the mother of a prospective student-athlete," as well as giving false and misleading information to NCAA investigators.

The Hurricanes have been actively recruiting two-sport star David Thompson from Westminster Christian, who has committed to the University of Miami, where he expects to play football and baseball.

Everyone wants to attack Luke.  How can you not be racist in a racist city like Miami.  Most of your comments shows what type of mentality this city has.   Now it's 2011 going on 2012 and these athletes are starting to think for themselves and make wiser decisions.

All you shallow low-life banana heads in Miami can go to hell.  Hop back on your rafts and rickety boats and go back to your miserable ass Islands.  You all have a lot to say about the athletes and are all on their nuts when the fame comes but only Uncle Luke is at the park mentoring these kids when there's no one there to help him... before the lights and glam.

People, people...its funny how you THINK you the FACTS about the case when u REALLY have the slightest idea about what's going on INSIDE the program named UCF. 1st let me address the groupies who are doubting his ability to be the GREAT Jeffrey Godfrey who he is...he wasn't this bad, garbage, worthless QB when he led UCF to its 1st ever bowl game VICTORY. 2nd there is much much much more that needs/ should be addressed about what's goin on in the locker rooms, let alone the field...watch Jeffrey in more detail then watch Blake in more detail...I'm not saying Blake is terrible..but be VERY CAREFUL how you use the term C O M P E T I T I O N. They use GODFREY as a mobile QB then throw Blake in as a passer. Before Jeff went to UCF, he was known for his ability to throw the ball 60+ yards and complete passes without a problem. 3rdly and I'm closing Godfrey and drew brees is the same height. He was doubted n underestimated as a QB as well. He also didn't go high in the NFL draft. But yet and still he is a superbowl champion!!! When God has favor over your life...no man can take it. And that's all folks.

He probably realizes with the NCAA violations that he will not be able to play in a bowl again at UCF or Miami so why not go to the better of the two and get a solid education.  UCF will probably be banned for bowls for a minimum of 5 years so he will probably not be the last to jump ship.

UCF Athletics just sent out a statement declaring Godfrey ineligible for the Spring semester and it has nothing to do with the NCAA allegations.  Most likely his grades.  Most likely grades from what I have seen.

It's funny how Godfrey's father is doing all of the talking for him.  Remember, Godfrey claimed to the media that he was the "best QB in the state of Florida", but he is too cowardly to talk to anyone about his transfer.  I guess he is embarrassed by that comment now.  If anyone watched any of the games, you could see that Bortles could move the ball easily and Jeff had problems.  Bortles probably should have played more than he did.  He just screwed his future and no school will take him as a QB (except for an FCS or low grade non-BCS school).  He is showing schools that if he does not get his way, he walks away and that is not the attitude people want.  It's funny how his dad said he wants Jeff to get to the next level.  Good luck with that.  I am thankful he is no longer a Knight.  We don't want quitters like Jeff.  Godfrey for Quitters!  Bortles for Heisman!

Jeff was given the raw deal at UCF and so was every black athlete that stepped on Massa GOLs field.

This article also brings up allegations against UCF. What do you think is going to happen to UM when all is said and done thanks to Shapiro? It will not be a cake walk. I thought Godfrey brought alot of attitude and honesty with him to UCF but to walk when things didn't go his way?  I for one bought into his attitude. Coach O'Leary gave him his shot at QB when no one else did. What we got in return was if I have to compete I am outa here.

Forget about Jeff. This is more about Uncle Luke (the racist pig that he is). I do fault both Jeff and his dad for letting a mindless idiot get into their head like this. I thought Jeff grew up with competition instead of hand outs.

Kid kind of blew his future.  You compete and even if you don't win the job you help the team elsewhere, earn a degree, and learn a lot in the process. Now hes gonna end up somewhere irrelevant, never learn about persevering and probably never impact a football team worth anything.  Haha, good job.  and good job to you too uncle luke, your keeping these kids down and its disturbingly obvious

But i hope Jeff gets to UM because they need the help

Thats one of miami's problems now, those private school kids aren't tough enough, might as well start calling Miami fau, what happen to signing 8-10 top 150 recruits, we need to get the big school ball hawks, where's all those 5a-6a all county and all states kids ready to contribute right now

Thank goodness. What a Damn baby! Inconsistent at best is all he was.

He isn't gonna be good enough to play for Miami or any other major school... maybe someone like FIU will take him... though they had a great yr this yr and im pretty sure their qb is still young... anyways i wish him the best... thanks for getting us the bowl win in memphis! that game was awesome and i had the pleasure of attending it

Competition and a bone head mentor killed this kid's promise. It's competition that should make you better, but Uncle Luke's whispers that JG was getting dissed really has destroyed this kids future...anywhere. Grow up and get better! Instead, "I'm telling my dad and taking my football home.". How immature.

runs when he has to compete for his job.....nice JG. Uncle Luke will lead you down the wrong path, but stupid is as stupid does.

Very disappointed in Jeff.  Sorry he doesn't have what it takes to compete and so I really don't understand how he feels he can compete at any other D1 school.  Really disappointed that he would align himself with Uncle Luke who is such an obvious racist.

Guess its smart for him.  He won't be a QB at the next level anyway, and he most likely won't play QB at any other school.  Really wish he would have stayed and competed because at worst he would be in the running for the starting QB job.  I think Godfrey still has what it takes to start at QB for UCF, and any knowledgeable fan of UCF this year would tell you it was 40% on the coaches, 40% on the bad O-line, and 20% on Godfrey himself.  Don't like kids transferring at the slightest bit of competition.  Godfrey (nor anyone else) isn't entitled to the position.

Good luck to Jeff.  The competition might be harder at other schools compared to UCF.  If you can't be the number 1 starting QB at UCF, how are you going to be #1 starter at another school, let alone Miami.  Competition makes you stronger, but you are afraid of it and EXPECT it to be handed to you.  Thank you for leaving UCF.

You guys are missing the obvious, O'Leary doesn't want him to run around...he wants a pocket passer...News flash JG is not and will never be a pocket passer...and you wonder why he struggled this year and why he wants to leave...this is not an issues of competition O'Leary wants this kid to run a race with one of his legs tied up...I don't blame JG I would leave to....

5 year bowl ban?  You're an idiot.  If UCF gets 5 years, Miami gets the "death penalty".  Neither will happen.  If Godfrey can't make the grades at UCF, how will he do it at Miami (since they are so superior than UCF when it comes to education)?  I see Godfrey going to FIU or an FCS school.  I must admit though, his father dug him a pretty bad hole with his comments to the Orlando Sentinel.  It basically states that he doesn't want to compete.

Are you sure it was because of his grades??  I mean are you positive it was because of his grades?

What?
What?

How was he given a raw deal?  No school recruited him as a QB, except for UCF.  They gave him a chance and no one else did.

Really, you have to bring race into this.  Let's name some of the great BLACK athletes that went to the NFL under George O'Leary's watch: Kevin Smith, Brandon Marshall, Mike Simms- Walker, Leger Douzable and the list goes on and on.  At least try to come off intelligent if you are trying to make racist remarks.  I hate how if things don't go a certain ethnicity's way (any ethnicity) it is always seen as racism.  This is what is wrong with American and with Luther Campbell.  You sound stupid.

A degree from Miami is more highly regarded than a degree from UCF......

This is a pretty ignorant post There are studs that come out of private school and lower division ball all the time. Are you saying that you wouldnt want Nelson Agholor because he isnt tough enough?

Someone like FIU!?!? That's an insult to my University. Why would we need him? He's cool and all but I'm more than confident Mario would pass.

As for UM, i think Al Golden wouldn't be interested as well.

Their QB was a fifth year senior. He was the QB at Miss. State when UCF played them in the Liberty Bowl. Way to talk out your a$$.

Stop with the FIU thing like we're a wasteland. He should take his talents to FAU.

Matt

Didn't say I was positive.  I said "most likely" based on what I have been reading.

Darrell
Darrell

True but I highly doubt UM will give him a scholarship. I'm sure JG people aren't going to pay tuition so he can walk on. He'll have to get accepted as well.

Jared

The reasoning for FIU is because there is no way he gets a scholarship to Miami and no way he could afford to go there, or get accepted.  FIU is in Miami, where he is from, and it would seem like a logical choice.  I don't think most people are putting FIU down.  I mentioned FIU because it is in the Miami area and he would have a better chance of getting in there rather than Miami.  Bethune Cookman could also be an option.
