With Hundreds of Dogs Abandoned Near Everglades, Rescuers Are Out of Funds

Candy, one of the 178 dogs rescued from the Everglades area since September.
The past four months have been a horror show for local animal rescuer Amy Restucci. Along with a group of volunteers, she has spent every weekend in rural South Dade rounding up dogs -- all of them former pets abandoned on the edge of the Everglades by feckless owners.

When she finds the animals, they're usually emaciated and sick from being tossed to the streets. "Some of them have needed leg amputations," Restucci says. "They have missing eyes. They have infections."

But here's the really bad news: After rescuing 178 dogs -- and three cats -- and spending roughly $65,000 on vet bills, Restucci can't afford to rescue the animals anymore.

She first heard about the packs of recently dumped dogs in September. They're found in Kendall, Homestead, Florida City, and -- most harrowing for the pets -- the predator-packed Everglades. They're not longtime strays: Many of them nuzzle Restucci when she approaches. It's unclear if the mass abandonment is a longtime phenomenon only now being discovered or a new by-product of the foreclosure spike and recession gripping the county.

A public service announcement for the cretinous dog owners doing the dumping: Fido is not embarking on a fun Milo & Otis adventure with, like, talking owls. If you abandon your pet in the Glades, it will most likely die of starvation or under the wheels of a car. Miami-Dade Animal Services picks up the dogs only when called. Because the animals are in bad shape, Restucci says, they are almost always quickly euthanized.

None of the animals she has rescued has been put to sleep. She raised all of the cash through donations -- documented in detail on the effort's Facebook page -- and swung discounted vet care and boarding at Acacia Animal Hospital in Pompano Beach. But she ran out of funds a couple of weeks ago. (Want to help by donating cash or adopting a rescued animal? Visit the effort's Facebook page or contact fladogs@thenokillnation.com.)

"My heart is broken," Restucci says. "We've saved more than one hundred, but it should be one thousand. There are countless more out there suffering."

How dare anyone here try to guilt me for donating to this cause?

After years of struggling, for the first time in my life I have disposable income. I split the majority of it between three projects I admire - two of which aid human beings.

Stop being so self-righteous and eager to point a finger at others. No one should ever feel bad for trying to help animals who have no means of helping themselves.

while you all argued for pages about dogs....thats right dogs...how many children do you think went to bed hungry or live in filthy drug riddled communities. Not saying this treatment of animals is right or just but we have ACTUAL HUMAN BEINGS who are shown less consideration then these dogs..Maybe when you suburban angels of mercy want to give some of that 1% bankroll to a cause how bout helping at a community center so maybe that kid you lock your cars doors when you see wont end up robbing you at an atm in 3 years.

I went to Acacia to see some of the dogs today. They were all so well taken care of, happy and grateful for being rescued! I will continue to support this wonderful cause today and always. Ladies, keep doing what you are doing!!!! You are angels!!

God Bless these people for helping, and I would rather send an organization like this money than spend it on something stupid and wasteful.

What is wrong with other people that would throw these pets out like that? If you cannot care for them take them to the nearest SPCA or Humane Society, if they cannot find a home for them at least they will be euthanized and not left to starve or be torn apart piece by piece out there or run over and left suffering in agony until they die alone? These pets cannot help themselves they depended on people and were thrown out like so much trash...

As someone who's been in animal rescue for about ten years, I can tell you, we don't really give a sh*t who gets credit for rescuing. As long as the animal is safe, we're happy.

Who are these sick bastards who think it's ok to just dump their dogs that have no abilities to live in the wild? Named and Shamed please and charged for cruelty and banned from ever keeping a pet again.

Where are the receipts? Why not scan them and create an album for it. Don't say the page because I also wasted hours looking and unless someone accidentally deleted them there is no post. Why must we argue about this continuously. I respect the work that is being done and am simply asking for compliance. Could it be Amy that NKN is not providing them to you? Nobody is down talking the need of help down there, it is great. Just asking in a polite manner to provide. I've written NKN but have not received a request for public information.

I want to tell everyone this is the most wonderful angels out there and all should pls donate to help them with donations they have brought many little dogs and cats to safety that have been dumped in the everglades there for death by mean people who could care less with no heart at all instead of careing and seeing about an animal to see they are giving a chance to live on they are not a fraud and anyone who thinks so are very wrong.Pls stop talkng bd about Amy Restucci and all who have volunteered their time to round up these babies and saved their lives and found homes and start to share even if its a dollar or pennies because those pennies amount to many dollars for the wonderful vets who nourish the babies back to health and keep them safe till they can find a home for them pls listen to me I love animals and am only one but if we work together with Amy and her army of angels we can save and to those who are dumping these babies and think to not do this we can have a better world pls think to help Merry Christmas to all and help us and Amy...

I am FB friend with this group of angels, online. I have been unable to donate due to finances this year. The economy is bad and sadly only getting worse, for most of America. In the midst of it...these folks are taking THEIR time, money, emotions to go out and try to "right" the wrong of the previous owners of these dogs. The things these people have to see (and share) are horrifying. I'm so thankful for this group of amazing people...for the hard work they are putting in. All for the love of the animals. HUGE Thanks to this group. And you better believe that when I can....I WILL financially help. Again...THANK YOU AMY and Crew!

178 animals, $65,000. That's about $365.00 per animal. That is less than what it costs me to take my 2 healthy dogs to their annual visit and shots. This organization works wonders with the funding they have. Vetting, spay/neuter, surgeries, boarding, grooming, the list goes on. Naysayers, go away. I will continue to support this group.

To the ladies that are in the trenches getting their hearts broken every day saving every life they can:  Don't let a group of small minded individuals dilute your determination.  They have obviously never been in rescue, or understood the massive expense it takes to help just one - let alone 100+.  Rescuers don't make money, profit, or benefit in any financial way from what we do - we do it for the love of animals.  Those who matter, already know what you're going through, and the endless effort you have made.  Be a donkey... face your butt to adversity and keep on working!  Kudos for all you do - the pets you have saved will be forever grateful, and that's enough said.

All I can say is if you don't want to donate, don't but open your home to one of their animals and that is really what they seek.

I am not sure why all the negative comments but I am one of the people who adopted a dog from Amy and Mirta at 100+ Abandoned dog. I somehow feel the need to share my story. The dog I adopted his name is now Tyson and he is one of the best additions to our family. When I called Amy after learning of the organization from a friend I was directed to a list of dogs available. When I chose a puppy I was 100+ miles away from her. I also provided her a few names of shelters that may take more dogs near me. She called and arranged everything. She brought our Tyson to our family. She did not ask for any money, not even an adoption fee she just wanted identification of who I was and a view of my ability to care for Tyson. Tyson was fully vetted and microchipped which was a big help for me. I was given all his paperwork showing all his vetting. They also offered to pay for his nutering (sp?) and he was still too young for this at time of adoption. I sent them many pictures of Tyson playing and happy to express my gratitude. I never knew people such as them were actually real until I met them and was shown what they do. I also freely chose to donate and send them pet items. I have no problem calling them for help with anything even after adoption.      When my other dog Sita that they did not even know was diagnosed with cancer I called Amy and she listened to all my tears. I was told by my vet that an amputation was my only option. She referred me to Acacia in Pompano and I gadly accepted. She offered to help finanically for her vet bills. At Acacia I was treated great and my fears were heard. I did not have to amputate her leg. They referred me to Coral Springs Animal Hospital where she saw Dr. Seaman. My dog Sita is now on chemo pills and she is monitored closely. She has made a great improvement. Amy and 100+ walked with me every step of the way. I am still in aww of their work and dedication to all animals. While I was at Acacia I was able to meet other dogs that 100+ had rescued and were vetting. The condition of those poor babies nearly broke my heart. Amy was there as I was leaving. She was paying for vetting for the rescued dogs, which was not cheap. Without them I would be lost.       I am sorry that you feel the need to bash them. I hope you will find peace one day and will be able to be like them. I will pray deeply for your hearts to soften. Merry Christmas!

I wouldn't give a penny to these guys. They are using this situation to establish themselves. They are dumping the dogs into private boarding, going against what rescue stands for. You don't abandon a pet after you rescue it, you take it into your home and work with it to make it adopt worthy. They've failed to call in the troops, choosing instead to leave dogs in the Everglades until they can raise more money. How horrible is that decision. I would rather die from a needle prick than from a snake bite or alligator. That's the choice given to these dogs by this group. Don't fall for it, they aren't rescuing these dogs for the dogs sake, everything they have done shows they are doing it for their own agenda, money.

Stay strong Amy!! I have donated Numerous times to No kill nation and  have had updates on what every single cent I have given does to help these animals. You people who are talking down on these groups of volunteers are probably the horrible people who dumped these animals off in the everglades! If you have nothing positive to stay then maybe you should voulenteer with them to see what they are going through if pictures arent enough for you. Its disgusting thta people cannot see the good in others. Thank you all the volunteers and people who have donated! Lets give these animals some more help!

Wake up America! This is happening ALL over! animals dumped late yesterdays garbage. This IS true, all the money goes to vetting and boarding the animals! Try rescuing just one animal and see the expense involved! NO KILL Nation is doing a wonderful job, and so are Amy and the rest! This is a heart breaking, no end situation for them and the dogs. Kill shelters KILL our pets daily! There are not enough homes for alll the homeless pets....so spay/neuter, get involved. Pull your negative heads out of your butts, and say THANK YOU! I have lived this in NY with over 100 cats, dumped by a marina, by the good people of my town because they heard the cats were being feed. They didn't know they were eating dog food, and get eaten by wildlife! Then comes me, a volunteer for a ca't shelter/ NO KILL!!!!! It took two years, but we saved everyone of them. It counts huge amounts of money to vet all of them. We were given $300 for our work! So you can not count on any govt group to help! WONDERFUL JOB TO ALL OF YOU AT NO KILL NATION! LOVE YOU AND I THANK YOU!!!!!!MK MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

Questions are not attacks. Any legit rescue or non profit is asked questions on a daily basis and able to answer them in a mature and professional manner. When an organization becomes delirious when asked questions that is a red flag. Legit organizations answer the questions because they feel confident in their organization and those that are not so legit act as though a question is an attack. Daily, I lose more and more respect for this group. Many people have asked where the money has gone. Amy has said that it has all been posted. I just wasted an hour of my life trying to find where. Where Amy? If it has all been posted then add a link to this page and people will stop asking. Until now, I had not really been one of the people who think the money is lining the pockets of people. Having gone back and seeing the statements from Amy saying it was proven and not seeing any proof, I am starting to wonder myself. Maybe the records are not shown because this group is not a 501c3 as been stated by them. The No Kill Nation is a 501c3. Therefore, the Everglades group does not legally have to show proof of their money spent. Morally they have an obligation, but legally no. Who does have an obligation legally is the No Kill Nation. I, for one, would love to see if their overall collection of donations has increased due to the everglades dog situation and of that how much has actually gone to the everglades dog group. Donations made to this group are collected and handled by the No Kill Nation and not this rescue. If a person donating does not specify that their donation is for the Everglades dog group then the No Kill Nation has no obligation to actually use the money for that purpose. They can legally use it for their own agenda. Why would a rescue group connect themselves directly with a group that works to bash not only the local shelter, but well known national groups  PETA, HSUS, ASPCA, and Best Friends? Why? So they can use the rescue to further their agenda it appears.

Yesterday, this group publicly reached out to HSUS only to be told that they could not directly and immediately help them. The HSUS directed them to their local shelter for help and guidance which is MDAS. Instead of following their advice, Amy and her group asked their followers to do a tactic seemingly taken straight out of the No Kill handbook. They told their followers to bombard the HSUS facebook page with the accusation that they were refusing help the their poor little group. During the time that was all going down, Amy was on her page several times claiming not one group had stepped forward to help and they were all on their own. More donations were asked for and not one dog was listed that was in their care and ready for adoption. Not one dog or cat, just requests to bash the HSUS publicly and for donations. As it turns out, there has been help. There does appear to be more than one group that has stepped forward to help. I cannot imagine how that must have stung when a local no kill group to have read that no local group was stepping forward when they, in fact, had. Those groups know who they are and they should get a public apology and credit where it is due. Also, it appears another group had been wiling to help. Ironically, it was the very same group that the HSUS had suggested they contact. It was the MDAS and it appears that their help had been refused. Amy went on to then bash the MDAS publicly and imply that something nefarious had been going on behind their doors by bringing up a past outbreak in the shelter and dogs that had died in their cages. Outbreaks happen at all large shelters as well as boarding kennels from time to time. What she failed to mention that was when the outbreak occurred the shelter eventually let every dog go to rescues or adopters at no cost. Many shelters euthanize the animals to stop the spread of disease and do not allow the exposed animals into the community. For them to take the chance and allow hundreds of animals that were possibly exposed was very unusual in the world of what some call the high kill shelters. Dogs have died in their cages. It does happen in places with huge intakes and some dogs arrive very sick. To this date, there have been no evidence given to show that anyone at MDAS did anything to cause those deaths. In the end, Amy publicly said that she would be working with MDAS after all. I guess the plan backfired.

The biggest concern I have is not for this group who is so heavily connected to such a divisive organization, no that is not my biggest concern. What leaves me awe struck is that so many people are just giving and praising and not asking simple questions themselves. Now there appears to be a number of people who are asking questions. For people to just give and give to a group who is not answering questions with facts can be a dangerous thing. One big issue the No Kill Nation's inspiration Winograd is to push for is accountability of the donations. That group takes huge issue with the funding of the HSUS and how that funding is used. So for this group to not follow their own belief is interesting.

Before giving money to any animal rescue group there needs to be questions asked. How will this money be used? What percentage of the donations go directly to the actual care of the animals and how much is administrative? Will my donation be used in a political way? What is the salary of the CEO or person in charge? Does this group have a 501c3 and if not why? If this group is using another's 501c3 why and who is that group? If the rescue is involved with another organization you need to ask yourself if you agree with their stand on the issues. Where can I see the adoptable pets? What is your adoption process? The adoption process including fees and application should be very easy to find on any legit rescue's site. Do you do follow ups on your adoptions to make sure your adopted pets are safe? Do you do home inspections? Do you send animals out of state without inspecting the facilities or homes they are being sent to? Who are all of the vets that you use? Are the animals in your care in an actual shelter, fosters, or do you leave them in boarding? What is the average time your pets are left in boarding or fosters? If no one adopts one of your animals then what happens to them? Where I can see pictures and stories of your successes? A rescue that is not showing images of the animals that are up for adoption and those that have been adopted should raise a red flag. In lieu of money can I volunteer at the rescue or foster? Will you take back a dog that has been adopted that is not the right fit for a family? A legit rescue will always take back on of their adopted. Any rescue that refuses should immediately be put out of business.

Before you donate further and go on defending this group, it would be best to make sure you are really defending someone that you truly want to be associated with. Also, I would love to know why the group turned to the HSUS when the No Kill Nation is right there. Just as the HSUS is not a physical animal shelter the No Kill Nation is not either. It is surprising the very organization that is handling the money for this group has not swooped down and fixed all of their problems like they expected the HSUS to do. After all, overpopulation is a myth they say. There are homes for all animals. If that is the belief of the No Kill Nation then why are there so many dogs stuck in boarding with no homes in a group directly related to them?

Akiser304

I see a lot of people arguing onst themselves about funding and which shelter is best an who is responsible for this momentus movement, but seriously, all the arguing takes away from the animals in need. Granted, there are shelters that completely suck, Saving Argos for one of anyone is aware of the utter bull that went on with Toby, but these people are working on whatever finds we can give them to save as many abandoned animals as they can. These people have good hearts and deserve support. If there is any evidence of fraud financially, I have yet to hear of it or see it outside of the comment section of this article. Theses animals were left to die and a group of good people are stepping up to help them. That deserves support and praise, not ridicule and outrageous claims. We unite for the animals.

I have glanced through some of the comments and frankly- I cannot believe that grown adults are having this discussion?  To the the people who are bashing Amy- are you doing anything to help with the situation or do you just feel good bashing other people who are at least trying to make a difference?  The situation is grave in the Everglades.  I suggest we all pull together and help toward this effort instead of tearing this organization apart. What good is it accomplishing? Please!

Rescue work is not easy, nor is it fun to watch those suffering-day and night. I believe those who pass judgement need to volunteer in rescues/shelters/transports for a few months at minimum, fb day and night on rescue groups cross-posting each one in desperate need(reading each post), and see and feel what it really is. And yes, most of us work normal jobs 40 hrs a week on top of that. Amy and all your wonderful people who work so tirelessly-Don't give up! Chin up sweetie. While they pass judgement in words(because they have no idea)-you have the pay it forward life and each one you, and your group have saved, we are thankful- tho not as much as they are. You have spoken for the voiceless repeatedly and saved so many! We all love you for what you have given to each one of them- life.

Establish? Do you hear what you are saying?Dumping?? We have saved over 100 dogs from death.. We find forever loving homes, Are we to have countless homes just waiting as we pull these almost dead dogs from the streets? These dogs are starved, abandoned.. We rescue them , we vet them until they are healthy. They are not at some low end boarding facility , they are at vets offices, wher I myself spend 5 days a week walking loving these animals. ..until they do find their forever loving homes. If you would rather die from the needle that is your choice.. We rescue these dogs as volunteers, with heart and the very best intensions for each and everyone of them. We post video of them suffering as we pull them to safety, we post video of them entering the vets offices. We post them as they gain weight and have smiles, and twinkles back in their eyes. When they do go to their forever home, they are loved unconditionally and will never starve again. I feel so sorry for you.. We are volunteers with HUGE loving hearts, and very empty pockets.. I pay out of my own pocket for some of these dogs.. If you look up above at a post about a dog namd tyson, she called me in tears her dog who was not one of ours needed help.. I offered out of my own pocket to help her.. So save your breath .. I will pray for you.. you are so angry and so bitter.. It is so very sad.. We sure could use your help, possibly walking and loving the dogs who do still need homes, saving.. If you decide you would like to make a difference , I welcome you to just see what it is we do.. It would fill all this anger you have inside of you.. Merry Christmas.. Amy

The problem with your statement according to the No Kill Nation is that they believe that pet overpopulation is a myth. They say that there are enough homes and there should be no mandatory spay and neuter programs. They appear to have ties to the breeding industry and shift blame for the millions of animals who die yearly on the shelters. By doing that they can help keep laws out of the books that would impede the breeding industry that rakes in millions every year. Be very careful about putting your support behind a group that, based from your very statement,  goes against your own beliefs. In fact, it is also a government agency that offered to help and was refused. City shelters are government run and do provide various services other than kennels for homeless pets. The Everglades group, after seeing the error of their ways, has come to their senses and has publicly agreed to work with the government run shelter in Miami.

Any questions you have about billing .. feel free to do a public records request for all info .. I could not possibly post all the receipts on facebook. I spent hours just trying to organize the ones from bravo alone. Like I said I promise you, there is nothing to hide. All is right at your fingertips, all you have to do is ask through public records request , that would be through no kill nation. We can account for each and every penny. As far as hsus, one of our supporters reached out to them, she told me I would be receiving a call, I did. We spoke for a while. she knew exactly of this heartwrenching situation .. We agreed on a lot of the same subjects. We discussed how bad things are in miami, at Miami Dade animal Services.. I explained Alex Munoz and myself speak on a regular basis. I reached out to Alex the director 3 months ago for help.. He said he could not offer any at that time. I met with him and comissioners a few weeks ago again trying to get some assistance. We put several ideas on the table.. Nothing.. So between hsus and mdas.. They could NOT offer any assistnce. I never asked for a penny, I asked for possible spay and neuter out in that area as so many animals are walking the streets pregnant and deliver in the streets. Many people who do live in the area who do let their dogs roam.. the dangerous streets, would like to have their dogs altered, but do not have the funds.. I thought if we could start somewhere to help with this overpopulation problem it would do some good.. Mirta Maltes has been begging for a facility so I asked if maybe they could give a facility to house these dogs, with a responsible rescue overseeing the animals. Not talking a horading situation a small amount to get them vetted and find homes. I am only one person.. I am trying everything I possibly can to help find a solution to this neverending situation of abandoned dogs.. We post each and every dog at the vets offices.. We post all the vets info for all eyes to see. We post pictures of all the dogs going to their new families.. Look at acacia animal hospital's facebook page.. Maybe you are not looking in the right place. I video everything.. as far as the adoption process try adopting you will see exactly how we do things.. We do homechecks, and vet ref checks.. No adoption fees. Donations are welcome to allow us to save more lives.. To answer your last question then I am done.. hsus before we hung up, I asked catherine just to be clear, when I am asked by the supporters of my page am I correct in saying hsus can't offer any help at all with these abandoned dogs in the everglades. Her answer was that is correct. Told me to contact the aspca.. Look into grants. I never told anyone to attack or post anything on the hsus site.. They did it on their own.. So please get your facts straight before posting lies.. We hope to get some help from alex munoz at mdas.. We are trying together to figure something out.. Will keep you posted .. Happy holidays, and please your attacks and lies are only hurting the animals who are suffering.. I would welcome you to bring any solutions without attacks to me directly.. We sure could use the help.. Like I said we are volunteers, We need all of you.. Amy

@Amy Roman Restucci God bless you Amy for what you are doing.I live in ohio and I just discovered your group a few months ago and I am heart broken I had no idea what was happening in the everglades until I found your group. I also do what I can here to rescue animals I feed stray cats and I myself have 11 dogs of my own..which all was in a situation that they needed a better home and I gave that to them.   I wish I could do more to help you if I lived down there I would be there helping you all. I had a thought and I don't know how you would go about getting this done ...But what if we could get your group its own show on a channel like animal planet or tlc or something...that would bring awareness to what is going on and also bring in money to help these dogs.  I would watch a show ..showing the rescue of these poor animals....This really bothers me ....I wish I could do more!

River-watcher...I don't think Mustlovedogs1378 is being rude at all! Amy has repeatedly said they have posted receipts and repeatedly people are stating that there is only one vet letter on the 100+ site and they can't find anything else so all we are asking is a link to the ones she says have been posted. Any person wanting to make a donation should ask for accountability. If you don't then you are ripe for being taken advantage of. I applaud you Mustlovedogs1378 and ask the same. Just provide the link to where you posted the receipts and if everything looks good, you will get a lot more donations...including mine! I have donated to several rescues in my area and have my own rescue dogs (which I cover all expenses for myself) and they have all been happy to open their books to me. :o)

Nobody has seen the error of their ways and agreed to work with the KILL shelter in Miami...They have decided to try to implement spay/neuter and work with outside rescue groups... The everglades dogs will NOT be going to MDAS....and FYI no one is against spay/neuter.  Please stop spewing garbage.

Can you really read all of them.? Some are soo very difficult to see that if you didn't trust then you would wonder. I have seen individual bills for Acacia. The only answer I have for the 100+/NKN is that, maybe, that record keeping is not anyone's priority. However, it should be now, with this amount of $$ coming in. If for nothing else but to answer some ??'s & cover some ass.So, was it really hard to ask nicely to see some paperwork, please, so I can pleadge?(not you guest) TYTY
