Miami Herald Might Move to Doral

Sure, Doral seems like a decent place to run the United States' military operations in South and Central America, but is it a good spot to headquarter a once-proud metro newspaper? The Miami Herald might soon find out. The South Florida Business Journal reports the Herald is now in negotiations to move its headquarters to the Doral location that once housed the U.S. Southern Command.

The Herald sold its current location overlooking Biscayne Bay to the Genting Group last year and must vacate the building by May 2013. So apparently they're looking at the area that once housed Southcom. The military center relocated next door, and its former headquarters have been empty since December 2010.

SFBJ cites multiple off-the-record sources, and it's not clear exactly how far along the discussions are, but there have been previous rumblings that the Herald might be headed to Doral. However, earlier this month, publisher David Landsberg sent out a memo assuring his staff that the Herald was concentrating on finding a location east of the Palmetto Expressway.

The location, at 3511 NW 91st Ave., is about two miles west of the Palmetto. For that matter, it's about a 13.2-mile drive to Miami City Hall and a 11.8-mile drive to county hall.

The Herald is looking for one central location for both its office space and its printing press. Finding a suitable location in modern-day Miami-Dade sprawl won't be easy.
