Poll: Obama Would Trounce Gingrich in Florida, Tie with Romney

Things aren't getting much better for Newt Gingrich in Florida. Yesterday, three different polls showed that he's lost his lead over Romney in the state, and now his campaign has admitted his now infamously fiery response to a South Carolina debate question about his ex-wife's claims he wanted an open marriage was based on a big, fat, full-out fib.

Now, the latest Quinnipiac poll shows that Gingrich would lose in a landslide to President Obama in Florida, which questions his viability as a general election candidate.

Meanwhile, ol' Mittens Romney ties with Obama in the Sunshine State.

Here's the head-to-head numbers of the remaining GOP field when they're matched against the President in Florida:

  • Romney vs Obama: 45% to 45%
  • Gingrich vs Obama: 39% to 50%
  • Santorum vs Obama: 40% to 49%
  • Paul vs Obama: 39% to 47%

The big difference is that Romney is the only candidate who appeals to independents as much as the President does. Independents split 42-41 between Romney and Obama. They prefer Obama over Gingrich 50-33.

"At least in Florida and at least at this point in the campaign, the data indicates that Gov. Mitt Romney is clearly the stronger Republican candidate against President Barack Obama," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, in a news release.

"But Romney has his own problems against Obama as Florida voters say both men are equally competent, but 54 - 39 percent that the president is more inspiring, 50 - 43 percent that Obama would a better job in a crisis and 48 - 42 percent that Obama cares more about them," continued Brown.

Though Romney does have one key advantage over Obama. The poll says he'd do a better job handling the economy, 50-41. Obama has a slight two-point advantage over Gingrich in that department.
