WSVN Still Fighting with DirectTV, but Subscribers Will Get to See American Idol and NFL

Categories: Media Watch
If you're a DirectTV subscriber in South Florida you haven't been able to see Fox since last weekend. That's because Sunbeam Television Corp., the owners of Fox affiliate WSVN, are locked in a battle with DirectTV over the amount of money the satellite provider pays the station. That means you may have missed some of the NFL playoffs and last night's American Idol premier.

While a settlement hasn't been reached, there's good news: you will be able to get the NFC Championship game and America's favorite fading singing competition through your satellite.

"WSVN-TV is still negotiating with DirecTV, but we care about our viewers, and we want them to be able to watch this game, which will determine who goes to the Super Bowl," aid Robert Leider, WSVN's general manager, tells the AP.

So, yes, Miami fans, you will get to see the New York Giants take on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. WSVN's DirectTV feed will then air repeats of the two-part American Idol premier before cutting to the local news. After that, though, its lights out once again until a deal is reached.

Regardless, that is at least good news for sports bars that subscribe to DirectTV for game coverage.

Sunbeam also owns two stations in Boston, one of which is the NBC affiliate. NBC is airing this year's Super Bowl, and that may or may not feature the Boston area's own Patriots (gross). So, some observers think that a deal should be reached before the Super Bowl broadcast.

Direct Tv told there customers that we could have all local channels provided to us.  Someone lied.  Direct Tv isn't that great.   I haven't been able to get hd for the last two days.  If you live in the Florida Keys you have comcast (which is worse) or Direct Tv.  What a great choice.   I wish infinity would come to the keys and do it right.  I would jump ship in a minute.  Thanks for the great service Direct TV.  As for as wsvn local.  I like seeing the New York news.  If a local channel wants to loose millions of customers not a problem.  They gave channel 398 with real life comedy.    I will boycott channel 7 because they don't like there customers.

I hope that my email and others to the NFL helped.

How dare Mr. Leider say "we care about our viewers"!!!!

Direct TV and WSVN have now made me re-think all of my programming options and after spending over $25,000 on Direct TV in the past I have decided that with all the options out there I really need both....you screwed me out of football, my wife missed Idol (and won't watch again) and we all missed "Alcatraz".   As to WSVN I will be permanently boycotting any and all advertisers....how this matter is dealt with will determine future contract negotiations with other affiliates....and whether you have satellite, cable or uverse, sooner or later you will be effected.

WSVN takes a lot for granted especially their loyal viewers. Once they loose their viewers they may never get them back because of their actions. Especially if this isn't resolved quickly and they find a way to make it right and apologize. We're all so frustrated right now but we'll adjust because they are way to many viewing options out there.  They can keep their programming and their station, they're not that good!

That is so true WSVN simply dont care about their viewers and this is not the first time they take actions like this to satellite and cable tv providers i think all cable and sat companies should get rid of this channel
