Cyclist Aaron Cohen Dies After Rickenbacker Hit-and-Run; Driver Michele Traverso Arrested

micheletrav.jpg
Michele Traverso
Aaron Cohen, one of the two bicyclist who were injured in an early morning hit-and-run car crash on the Rickenbacker Causeway on Wednesday morning, has died.

Meanwhile, police have arrested the driver Michele Traverso, 25, after he turned himself in early this morning. Traverso was driving with a suspended license and has a history of drug charges.

Cohen and his friend Enda Welsh were biking across the causeway around 6 a.m. on Wednesday morning when they were hit by a late-model, silver Honda. After the accident the driver sped off. Both victims were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Welsh sustained an ankle fracture, but Cohen had much more serious injuries to his head.

According to Local 10, Cohen has now died.

Cohen was an experienced cyclist, Ironman competitor, and a married father to two young children.

"As you can imagine I'm totally distraught," Cohen's father Stephen told CBS4 shortly after the accident. "Aaron is probably the nicest person who has ever lived."

"He was the kind of son that every father dreams about," said Cohen. "Everybody loves him, he's just special."

Cohen leaves behind his wife Patti and two children, 3-year-old Lilly and 1-year-old Aiden.

The 25-year-old man likely responsible for Cohen's death, Michele Traverso, is now behind bars. Police were able to identify the make and model of his car from debris left at the crash site. His car, with obvious damage, was eventually located. Traverso turned himself into police early this morning.

So far he's been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and driving with a suspended license.

Traverso had previously been charged with possession of cocaine just last May and possession of marijuana in 2009.

i am so sad for many of the comments. i was hit in the same spot cohen got killed and made it alive dont know how. the guy in the car hit me with his side mirror at over 50mph. he never stopped. i did not even realize i was hit because it was so fast. blood dripping down my arm got me aware of the incident.I became afraid of riding from that day on, and now every day i go ride i pray to god to make it back alive.there is no reason why not to be carefull and take others in regard. why cant we just be responsible and care for our sorroundings.shame on humanity when these things happen, when someone gets hurt because of your irresponsability and the person responsible has no remorse, shame on us...

Facts as presented by various media outlets (and confirmed) about Michele Traverso:1. He was previously charged on Cocaine possession. 2. He was charged on Marijuana possession at a different time3. He hit two cyclists on Key Biscayne4. He left the scene5. He did not call 9116. He was Driving with a Suspended License7. He covered up the wrecked car with a TarpEven for those giving him the benefit of the doubt, this is a list of no less seven things he is factually known for, five of which relate to this incident alone. We are all human, but as I see it this is not a case of problem with bikers or drivers in Key Biscayne (Granted there is much to be done about Biker and Driver safety on Key Biscayne, no doubt about it). This is the case of a young good family man finding his demise at the hand of a recidivist. This was NOT an upstanding citizen who caused a fatal accident because of lack of barriers or not enough safety measures (not a matter of opinion, matter of precedence and fact). A good upstanding citizen would have not fled the scene or tried to cover up the tracks. A good upstanding citizen would would have not driven with a shattered windshield endangering others along the path after an accident like that. An upstanding citizen would have called 911. This is the case of someone who had a pending date with the law for previous charges. Given those specifics, why is the argument here about bikers versus drivers on Key Biscayne? The issue as I see it, is Michele Traverso.

Aaron, I am deeply saddened you had to meet Michele that day. You were a good man and I wish nothing but for your memory to stay alive for your family and for them to get through this difficult time.  Condolences to Family and Friends!

I never comment on anything but I remember about 6 months ago when I worked at a bank on us1 and I saw a hummer leaving the drive thru and hitting a cyclist... the guy and his bike flew like 2 lanes, had a road rash on his left arm, and broke a 600 dollar watch, and scratched the crap out of his diamondback.... I remember like it was yesterday, he was on his way to a job interview and took his bike because he didn't want to drive all the way to downtown. I gave him my phone to call the cops and the cops didn't do anything. The guy in the hummer was talking on the phone, and he lowered his window, looked at the guy, and left. No one got his license plate... I guess what I'm trying to say is we have to share the road guys... be really careful. My boyfriend rides everyday because he loves it and it's a great workout... I fucked up my back on my bike actually trying to ride on a sidewalk that had too many bumps.. mind you I was learning to ride again after years, and I was trying to avoid an old man who didn't see me and started to paint his sidewalk by cutler bay.....

What was the driver doing driving home at 6:00 am? Had he been getting drunk at Club Space? Was he doing drugs that don't show up on standard drug tests?

This guy is going to jail and the dead bikers are not going to be resurrected, in this country anyone can go through a calamity like this. Its not fair to either one because both lives are over. Cyclists are a plague in KB, they are always getting hit or crashing into each other... if you want to be extreme, do so, but remember the risks... I would ban pack riding in KB. That shit cray

Guest

You are missing the point here, which is: 1) These two cyclists did not constitute a "pack" 2) This kid, who was driving HOME at 6 a.m., LEFT THE SCENE. Yes, it is a tragedy, but it is truly pathetic Traverso does not value fellow humans' lives enough to stop.

zosocane
zosocane

What does pack riding on KB have to do with two riders riding atop the William Powell Bridge side by side in a bicycle lane and getting hit by a driver who leaves the scene -- with the windshield of the driver's car shattered, yet proceeds to drive back home to KB (presumably to sober up to pass any toxicology tests)?

There is no respect here in miami for athetes at all.I bike every day in Key Biscayneand the speed limit is more like 60-to 65 miles .Where is the Police ???????you see people driving while testing and going into the cycist lane.I do not ride my bike any more during the weekends ,specially early in the morning.you just get to many drunk drivers coming out of the night clubs fromMiami Beach.WHERE IS THE POLICE WHEN YOU NEED THEM??????????

As soon as the judicial system stops playing patty cake with these killers - and they are killers - they just use a car to kill while drunk or drugged or unlicensed and straps one into OLD SPARKY for a mere 500 volt scare (not death) so everyone can see it as a WARNING - first offense shock therapy, second offense crispy bacon - will people PAT ATTENTION. Not until.

I know the guy who was driving... he was a Drunk and did coke very often... I'm 90% sure he was drunk as fuck coming back from the grove at 6 am and hit these people like a drunk idiot. Since he was drunk he fled the scene because he would have been charged with vehicular manslaughter so he rather get caught sober so they can't prove anything.  This guy had something bad coming to him eventually.... this case has nothing to do with cyclist safety   in traffic i'll tell you that much

once again another tragedy on rickenbacker causeway. I think that at some point the city needs to realize that digital speed limit signs are simply NOT gonna cut it when it comes to safety standards to the most visited biking route in the county. The city has invested millions of dollars on aesthetics, and signs that really just distract drivers even more. I understand that the roads have to be shared, but when all you have is a white line and 3-5ft of separation between cars traveling at 45mph and human beings- its a recipe for disasters. Instead of beautifying an already extraordinarily scenic route why not put up concrete barricades that will ensure no humans being hit and completely separating them? It would have been way cheaper than the adjustments they have made. Drunk drivers certainly suck and running away purposely is cowardly....but the truth is it could have happened to a texter, or just a distracted driver....it happens often...no sign or police presence will ever prevent that...if the roads are to be shared there needs to be sacrifice on both sides...and i think a PHYSICAL barricade is the only way to ensure no one ever gets hit...

zosocane
zosocane

You know what is the easier way to put a stop to this?  Have cops with speed traps right before the William Powell bridge, right before the Seaquarium, and right after the Bear Cut bridge.  People get SCARED -- especially drunks -- when they see cops with radar equipment.  Do you notice how everyone all hits the brakes at the same time and then they start following the speed limit signage?  THAT is when these senseless deaths will come to an end.

I ride bicycles a lot, but personally, I stick to the sidewalks all the time. Only when there's no sidewalk, or no traffic at all, would I ride on the roadsides; and then it's a frightening experience I'm only too anxious to exit. It's even worst now with cellphones and hybrid cars. If you ride a bike here, you better have your entrance into Heaven well-provided for by a strong faith in Lord Jesus.

nmora

This is a tragedy in more ways than one, my deepest condolences to the Cohen family. The gray area here is that even though cars are supposed to share the road, when on the bridge cyclists are supposed to unmount and walk over. All of us that have ridden over the bridge, or driven over the bridge know how improbable this is. Not only because the sidewalk is too narrow but also bc if you want to get a serious work out done, you are not going to walk your bike over. The speed that most vehicles carry while on the bridge is way past the speed limit, this is bc police cars cannot park on the actual bridge.Unfortunately there needs to be more awareness of the conditions on both ends. We need to share the road as drivers and cyclists.

Opus the Poet
Opus the Poet

Police could station a radar or LIDAR operator on the sidewalk with a radio and pull cars over when they get to the end of the bridge. It's a matter of actually wanting to do something about the speeding and distracted drivers on the bridge that is the problem, not a lack of space to put a police car. They also have these wonderful things called speed cameras that record your speed and take a picture of your face at the same time, a couple of them on the bridge would go a long way to reducing the number of speeders there.

Ed Ochoa
Ed Ochoa

God Bless the Cyclist and his family, so sad to hear these thing, I use to love to ride down the bridge in Key Biscayne, but lets be real here unless they make another road which is blocled off by concrete like they have for joggers, i will never ride there or in any other busy Miami street for that matter. Why would anyone take it for granted now a days that drivers will pay attention to the road with all this new technology out there, you have cell phones, I-pads, now even cars have on board computers with screens.  so sad but this will not be the last accident either

Yes there are cyclists who don't ride responsibly, just like drivers who don't drive responsibly. But I seriously doubt this tragedy was the biker's fault since he was an experienced cyclist. There are far too many people in Miami - drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians - who all think they have the right of way, don't know the rules of the road, and care so little about people's lives that they'd rather just rage all over  the road than play it safe. This guy probably doesn't even care about his own life, judging from his record. My friend got hit by a car once while she was on a bike and the driver sped away - because he hit her ON PURPOSE. True. He was pissed because we were riding in the road, single file I might add, where we had every right to be. He was just too much in a damn hurry to get where ever the hell was so important that he was ready to kill anyone who was in the way. The paramedics said they see it all the time and she was lucky she wasn't killed. People need to chill out, learn the rules, and get some respect.

In Florida the bicycle is legally defined as a vehicle. Bicyclists have the same rights to the roadways as cars do.

Both cyclists killed in ***HIT AND RUN*** collisions on Key Biscayne in the recent years were using the bike path that runs along the road.

What an ignorate statement. It's actually illegal for bicyclists to use the sidewalk and they can be fined by police for doing so ... not that it ever happens in Miami (but it should as I saw it happening frequently when I lived in Gainesville, a city in which bike laws are strictly enforced and sharing the road is done so with little uproar from motorists). And having bicycles on the sidewalk is actually dangerous for pedestrians. Trust me, I've been hurt by a bike wheel running right into the back of my leg. Florida law says bicycles must use the roads and cars must respect a bicycle as if it were a motor vehicle.

seep

"It's actually illegal for bicyclists to use the sidewalk and they can be fined by police for doing so."

Don't be ridiculous.

Reasoning101
Reasoning101

You're right. It's illegal in some states to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk (like California), but it is legal in Florida unless prohibited by local statute.

In Florida a bicycle is a vehicle and its operator is a driver. On roads they have the rights and responsibilities all vehicles and drivers, and on sidewalks the rights and duties of pedestrians.

Florida Statutes § 316.003(2), (10) and 316.2065(1), (10) and (11).

A_Constant_Reader

You are absolutely correct in everything you wrote.  Ours is a culture here where drivers aren't driving, they are fooling with their phones, eating, shaving, putting on makeup, anything but actually driving.

I will add though, that I have seen numerous cyclists disregard traffic laws as if they didn't apply to them, but then turn around and cite the same laws when it suits them.

Responsibility goes both ways.
