"Occupy Tha Hood": Occupy Miami Takes Over Overtown Apt. Building UPDATED (Video)

Occupy Miami has moved to Overtown. Not everybody is happy about it.
On Tuesday, January 31, hundreds of cops forcibly shut down Occupy Miami's tent city at Government Center, ending nearly four months of protests.

But instead of heading home, dozens of protesters mysteriously migrated to a half-empty apartment building in Overtown. Apparently with the permission of the building's owner -- an enigmatic Occupy Miami member who has changed his name to Sr. Paz, or Mr. Peace -- they have taken the doors off of 26 units, spray-painted Anarchy signs on walls, and re-established "Peace City."

Rent-paying tenants, however, claim the protesters have only brought noise, drugs, and filth. "They poop on the walls!" says Sharene Odho. "It's like we live in a huge crack house now."

Update: Click through for a video report on the new camp and the residents' complaints.

Anywhere from 30 to 78 protesters now live in 540 NW Seventh Street. Odho and other tenants named a long list of complaints against their new, non-rent-paying neighbors.

First, there were, indeed, some rather large human paddies out front, including suspicious brown smudges on a wall.

Second, the removal of doors -- part of Occupy Miami's communal mindset -- had led to flooding, tenants said. Gloria Adams in Apartment 3 pointed to a giant recently patched hole in the ceiling where she said someone fell through because of the leaks.

Odho also claims that many of the protesters openly take drugs and are attracting local drug dealers.

Then there is the graffiti on several walls and several dozen young men and women hanging out on the staircases and balconies. Someone tagged the building opposite: "Occupy Tha Hood."

MIAMIoccupythehood002.jpg

Tenants say 78 Occupy Miami protesters have moved in, stripping doors off their hinges and spray painting walls. Occupy Miami members put the number at closer to 30.
Some of the changes are more positive. One apartment has been relabeled the "Future Machine." It's clean and well kept, and the door is covered with peace signs, a "To-Do" list, announcements, and the phrase: "People Over Profits."

But residents are fed up. Jessy Lopez, a young single mother, said her young son was playing on his bicycle as two Occupy Miami members made out on a truck parked in the middle of the courtyard. When she asked them to quit the heavy petting, the guy told her to "fuck off."

"They are destroying our building," Odho adds. "We've lived in this
neighborhood our whole lives. We shouldn't have to deal with this."

John Noone, a clean-cut Occupy Miami member who runs his own pet-sitting business, was keen to point out that the encampment wasn't official. "Occupy Miami is in a transition phase right now," he says. "It's not like there is a full-on consensus on moving here."

Aria Anderson, a middle aged Italian woman dressed all in black, is the group's de facto leader. She quit her job as an Ocean Drive restaurant manager to take up the cause. Anderson says Occupy Miami has improved -- not destroyed -- the building by renovating empty, run-down apartments.

"The love that initially triggered us to make a stand against injustice is still driving us," she says. "This should be a place where people can come together and find solutions."

Perhaps the only thing that the Occupy Miami members and rent-paying-tenants agree on is that the chaotic situation rests on the shoulders of building's owner, Rodrigo Duque, who now calls himself Señor Paz.

"Well, I opened the doors of this place," Duque said in a phone interview. "Basically, all peaceful people are welcome."

"Yes there have been complaints," he admits. "There is some sort of resentment probably because the tenants feel like they are paying but the other people are not. The peaceful people are not paying because we don't have a place (since the eviction)."

He says he has a simple solution for the problems between occupiers and tenants.

"The tenants are welcome to stop paying if they open the doors of their apartments," Duque says. "They are paying for privacy. That's a choice that they will have to make."

Also, F.Y.I., the building has been condemned and the owner has been told to destroy or repair by April 2012, for some reason it is still standing...

This place is a really horrible place, the worst of the worst in Miami reside in this area and at this location in specific. In addition, that guy Senor Paz, or Peace as my ex best friend refers to him is a cult like figure among these people. He preys on the weak and desolate people of the city, and has them sign up for credit cards, cellphone plans, and other legal contracts to obtain the benefits of cash redemption programs while leaving a huge sum of money left to be paid for these people who have no scope of the real world. He took my best friend that I grew up with since middle school from me, and now has him living like a homeless man at 540 NW 7th St. He has shunned all his friends and family for this false idol, and gotten himself into deep debt for this man who has done nothing for him, but he looks at him as some sort of provider. His parents sent him to a rehab last month to change his views on the world, and help him get off drugs and from that rehab he didn't go back home and start fresh, instead he went to these God-forsaken apartments. It really is a horrible and terrible depressing story. Brings tears to my eyes to just write this.

WOW so much for their BS system and non-existing moral values. Not too long ago I was involved in a HIT & RUN accident in Miami, since my vehicleis brand new I decided to follow these morons. After the police arrived at 540 NW 7th Street, neither the driver nor the owner of the vehicle that damaged my car was to befound... These guys have no sense of responsibility!!!  It's a shame tosee young and intelligent people wasting their time...but, I guess life is more pleasant when you have zero responsibilities, nor have to pay bills. What kind of society, do these self-righteous claim toembrace? ...their peaceful movement is  BS...they are not honest...Stopwasting our Tax money and get real jobs...Be productive...

Miami's Brickell neighborhood offers you a little flavor of Manhattan right in South Florida. It is located just south of downtown Miami and considered to be the financial center of the Miami Dade area. Many international banks and financial institutions are located there,

In addition to being a neighborhood that you will find to be quite satisfying professionally, Bricklell has a lot of offer in the real estate realm as well. Depending on your preference, you may find the various high rise condominiums and residential apartments with an emphasis on luxury to your liking. If you really want to work hard and play hard, and have achieved some degree of success, Lower Brickell is home to Millionaires Row, with finely appointed homes that are exquisite and elegant.

All of you are just idiots. I can say I am part of the 99%, but you guys are NOT representing me. You guys are doing EXACTLY what the 1% wants you to do, and that is fight with each other to ruin your image. I am ashamed to say that you say you represent me and the 99%, because you guys are really representing the leftover trash,. Have some balls and occupy a nicer location where the tenants can actually do something about it and see if you get the same result. You might as well go home, because in my opinion, you have destroyed the validity of your so-called movement. The government is laughing at you as we speak. Enjoy it.

I have caught a confrontation with the same neighbor, yesterday afternoon on camera. She was complaining, stating that no one can go in the apartment upstairs from theirs, claiming that "the ceiling would fall", even though we have a couple of construction worker in our team and they assure that there is no danger of that happening at all. The husband of the lady that called the interview with the NewTimes, few minute into the argument, run upstairs and kicked one of our younger Occupiers (18 yr old) in the stomach after a long sequence of verbal abuse. This was all caught on camera. We choose the non violent way of addressing matters, I only wish more people would do the same. Also, on our way back from an outreach action on friday night, we saw a older woman using the front of the building as a toilet, and she is not an occupier. Unfortunately we did not catch this on camera and we only have about 5 eye witnesses that are still looking for her so that they can confront the matter.

This is merely one more example of"useful idiots." Strange how the building's owner is "OK"with allowing the destruction of his property . . . wonder what hisproperty insurers will have to sat about his "open door"policy when he files for reimbursement of the cost of repairing thedamage?

Altruism? Hardly!

Look at the picture of the "occupy-ers"-- young, barely educated, lazy -- that's what I think. Do they evengive the slightest impression of wanting, much less being able, totake care of and take responsibility for their choices and actions?

Hardly!

They are jealous moochers who simplywant to "protest" everything that is solid, traditional, and authentic. They will not stop until they achieve their goal ofestablishing chaos because that is the only environment in which theyare able to "succeed" in getting/taking/stealing everythingthey want.

I worked at a non-profit org that had donated space in an office building downtown. The Democrats and Republican parties of Miami-Dade county have local offices donated by supporters and they don't pay for them. Maybe The New Times should do an expose' on all of the non-profits in the same situation and go interview the people who share the space. You will get in-depth stories about who messes up the bathroom, who drinks all the coffee, and who steals yoghurts from the refrigerator. It's up to the owner of the building who stays and pays, it's nobody's business who pays what for rent or who get's paid what on a job. That is negotiated among the parties involved. On the other hand if my non-profit was really disturbing or disrupting paying businesses, we would lose our space. There were rules and protocols we were expected to follow. I understand that this is not an office; this is a place where people live, you can go home from work, but the tenants of this building deserve to come home to a peaceful domicile. I cannot say I have first hand knowledge of what is happening at this address, however, I do know the intention of these  activists is to do good in the community, not just crash the building. Some of the accusations launched at them are absurd, like "pooping in the alley", i can guarantee no activists are doing that. They are not delinquents. They need to work in service to win the locals, who will be the judge, lets see what happens next.

The most disturbing part of this article is the condition of the building and how a group of idealists and rent payers are being taken advantage of. This man is nothing less than a slum-owner. For Rodrigo Duque of This Faro Intl Corp to offer free rent in a dilapidated building to anyone let alone a group of young activists trying to do the right thing, and continue to charge rent to other occupants is amoral and could be illegal. Renovation projects and neighborhood beautification in low-income areas is a beautiful thing and a great path for Occupy Miami to take and I fully support that. But to lure Occupy Miami into renovating his building for free is outrageous. I don't care what he has done or not done. He is nothing more than a scumbag slumlord and should be held accountable - by the courts, the occupants and by occupy miami.

Is Rodrigo Duque footing the entire bill and paying for their labor? He has plenty of money.

Mr. Peace would best be served by learning the actual definition of the word peace. He should man up and repair his own building(s) and improve the unsanitary conditions he has allowed human beings to live in. If Mr. Duque truly wants to be '"The Change he wishes to see in the world." he needs to walk his talk and own up to his professional and ethical responsibility. Occupy Miami should dissolve the corporation they created together with Duque and stand up for the occupants of that building who are the real victims here and have renter's rights.

Shame on Rodrigo Duque

I've been to the building 3 times. At most there are 25 of our people there. The tenants should stop paying rent if they have a reason. Not liking your neighbors is not a reason. The building being condemned is. Matters of rent is between the tenants and the landlord, and we support tenant rights... even when there land lord is giving us free space.

The Occupiers were offered the space, therefore they are not trespassing nor are they squatting. The spaces they were offered are all un-rent-able do to their condition. The building has been condemned. The doors were already off, Occupiers did not take them off.  We are attempting to fix up additional units for housing as well as meeting and planning spaces.

Those interviewed speak for themselves, not the group as a whole.

One Love.
One Love.

In overtown, smoking and groping is common. These guys dont look like the usual crackheads that inhabit the area. The tenant's are just mad at the rent situation. I say let them be, join them, go help, take action. Because you are nothing but a puppet until you do. If you know everything is messed up and choose to ignore it and be a "winner" instead... Then you are probably evil at heart, people are all connected. We are family, and if your brothers dont make it, neither will you. We all need to be autonomous and self substinent, truth.

Hi..this is Aria Anderson,, I am far from being a leader, but merely a motivator and facilitator for those that wish to move forward in our Cause and march to bring Awareness of the N.D.A.A as well as other injustices that people are too busy to pay attention to, and the Journalists are too caught up with the superficiality, to make the people aware of it all.We have working bathrooms and we do not need to take our #2 outside. I know these Occupiers one by one, and they are not at all like the picture that has been painted of them. There are no crack heads among us...maybe some where already there, this is the hood after all, but not among the occupiers. We have made some noise because we are trying to fix the building so that we will have a place to facilitate the different committees we are restructuring. A lot more people will soon be aware of how bad the situation in the USA is becoming , and more people will soon be ready to make a stand against injustice, since they are loosing their jobs and their houses everyday.. We are just the pioneers in this movement that will soon become a global issue. I suggest any journalists that care to expose the truth, to spend a few days with us instead of just judge based on an hours visit in response of a call from an angry neighbor that based the complaint on Envy ..."they don't pay the rent and we do."We are all humans and we are not perfect, but at least we are trying.

The building is condemned already? Hmm, but people are living there. Strange. Also, Aria up there claimed they were fixing up the building. Why if its being condemned? Seems like a serious misallocation of resources.

If the building is indeed being condemned, Mr. Peace is just a two-bit slumlord.

You don't make a clear argument, you only speak in terms of "us/them" binaries. You don't define "us/them" in clear terms either, you constantly redefine them. For example, if you were truly an activist group, you would unite under a certain code of beliefs and follow them. That's essentially what defines any organization. Instead, you've gathered a group of people, given yourselves a title, live selfishly and without principles, and claim that it's all part of your cause. You say "We are family" in a way that creates a false sense of community. No "family" is homogeneous; families and communities are made up of different individuals with different values and goals. You can't define other people's values and goals. You're defensive about the paying tenants making value judgments about you and your group. That's because you make value judgments them: you're projecting your own tendencies on them. You're not improving society, you're operating from the same moral stage as totalitarian dictators: "you're either with us or against us. Everything we include in 'us' is good, and everything we include in 'them' is bad. You're part of 'them,' therefore, you're bad and your opinion is invalid."Your logic is fallacious; rather, you don't have logic. You're trampling the values of a pre-existing community without regard for the health or well-being of that community. You're a group of self-righteous tyrants, not freedom fighters. If you truly cared about "family" and "brotherhood," you'd endeavor to understand all members of the community and find a positive, constructive way to show people your perspectiveInstead, you've colonized an underprivileged community, told them what's best for them, and forced them to become, essentially, a part of your project. All you've done is create a microcosm of Western hegemony and said "yeah, but our principles are good, so it's okay for us to colonize these people." But you've forced your definition of "good" on others. You're self-righteous and no better than the hegemonic forces you claim to oppose.

I don't care what you are doing or not doing or how the media is or isn't protraying you guys honestly. What I do care about is that you guys ARE NOT with Occupy THE HOOD. I don't appreciate you using the phrasing associate with our movement which has a national reputation of being above being a menance to our neighbors. Spray painting walls is not "improving" a building. Taking off doors so you can't contain your noise level is not an "improvement" And Mrs. Anderson your little racist comment " There are no crack heads among us...maybe some where already there, this is the hood after all, " Is the exact reason why you should not even be In the Hood. You need to go to a white neighborhood where a majority of drug users live and pull that mess, where you damage property and behave indecently in front of people's kids. As a representative of Occupy The Hood in VA I just wanted to let everyone know This is NOT Occupy the Hood. Occupy tha or da Hood is foolish. If you hear about people being fed, clothes being donated and people of color being educated, THAT'S Occupy the Hood. Anything else is only associated with the Occupy Movement. Don't smear our name in the process. It's just disrespectful.

This is the information I have been told by folks staying there. We plan to fix the units we are going to use, so they are functional. We have to work with what we have. This is a space that has been offered to us. If we get the resources together, we can actually leave a positive mark by fixing up and beautifying the building, as well as create a functional living and work space for those in the movement. Make whatever judgement you may about our brother "peace". He and I disagree on many occasions, and seeing the conditions of the building first hand i would tend to agree with you...

But... without knowing the full story on the building, it's ownership, management, and status of residence; I can't really make that call. I can tell you he was dedicated enough to the camp and the ideals to donate several tents, a solar generator, and food on several occasions, as well as offer this space to all in camp after the eviction came down. Before the eviction of the camp, few of us new anything about this building. The issues between him and the tenants is his business... but I hope the group of occupy activist taking up residence can better the situation for all involved; 'peace', the tenants and themselves.

With the investment of labor, time and materials, improvements could be made to bring the building back into good standing... I don't know if that is realistic, but stranger things have happened.

Aria Anderson
Aria Anderson

I didn't even know about the movement Occupy the Hood, and i assure you that it was far from been my idea to write such thing in the wall. I am not a leader as i have have already state in my comment. I am only a person that care enough to take my time to see if there is anything I can do to make this one a better world for it's inhabitant.I am also very far from being a racist, never was, never will be. I am Italian ( a great minority, use and abuse in the history of this country) and I get along with all of my fellow humans, i do not judge people but the actions, and those do not have color, or religious status or anything that fall into the discrimination category.I am sorry that someone use your name that I assume is trade mark since you feel so strongly about, but it was not me, and i can only be accountable for my own doing. One thing that i can do for you, is getting a brush and some paint and next time i will be over there i will paint over it myself...but that is something I will do, only because apparently nobody else thought was something that can be done.

Aria Anderson
Aria Anderson

I am not a racist and I was never told that being a crack head is consider a race... I state the obvious when i say that there are some in this area ..it is not my doing that brought that kind of reputation ,I just state what I see, and that doesn't mean that all in there are, i did not say that either.I have no idea who was that wrote on the wall, it was never approve by any of us, nor the name it self, nor the action. We call yourself Occupy Miami Peace City Camp from the begging of our new journey. I am in the hood because I care. I do have a nice little place I call home, and that i go away from, to be in the hood, because there are a lot of things that the people that live there needs to know and that are happening behind their backs as well as the back of the rest of the country.I found that some do not have internet or even tv, and unless someone tell them in person, they will never know. Maybe since you seem to care, you should join our effort to bring awareness and bring our message further  instead of judging without even knowing our intentions or backgrounds. Some of the people in there are originally from the hood, but lost their home due to the regressions and the scarcity of job that this country is suffering for quite some time.

Kevin Young
Kevin Young

I agree with you. "Occupy The Hood" is it's own thing. These knuckle heads should have known better than to tag it up as a catch phrase. We have no "leader", we do have those of us who express leadership skills (step up, step back, be the example, know when to do which)... sadly, those skills are not whats exemplified in this article.

We are in fact, trying to create a space to offer many of the community services you described. This may or may not be that space. time will tell.

I think the doors thing is stupid and ridiculous, and this was the first I heard of it... although I've only visited the spot a few times. I wouldn't stay there without the option of privacy.

I can see how Mrs Anderson's remarks are offensive. I know that was not her intent. She does not stay there. She only goes there with the intention to try to keep people focused on getting the message out and creating a positive space. But yeah, As I read how you quoted her, that sounds racist as shit.

Perhaps a little perspective on the area... Half of the building is uninhabitable, and from what I've been told, the whole building has been condemned The two complex buildings across the street (one with 'tha' tag), also uninhabitable. The area has a  long standing history of problems with the homeless, vagrants, and drug addicts who take up residence in these abandon buildings.

But from sources who stay there, At no point in time has there EVER been more than about 25 occupy folks there at 1 time, and at no time had I or anyone else heard of our folks defecating behind the building.

I am personally embarrassed by this article after the 1200+ hrs and literal blood sweat and tears I've put into this movement here in Miami over the last 4 months.

On behalf of myself and those in Occupy Miami who will agree with me, I offer My sincere apologies to you and all who are apart Occupy The Hood; that this fiasco ever happened, and the name of your group was dragged through the mud and across the headlines.

I hope you will reach out to me and contact me on FB, so we can share what we are doing and network to create a stronger movement.
