Paul Mira, Teacher Who Had Sex With 12-Year-Old Student, Avoids Jail Time

Categories: Crime
Paul Michael Mira, the former PE director at a Miami charter school, has admitted to having sex with both a 12-year-old and a 17-year-old student, but because of a plea deal struck with prosecutors, the man will not have to serve any time behind bars. Instead, the sexual predator who has basically admitted to statutory rape will get off relatively light: probation, registration as a sex offender, and a lifetime ban on teaching.

Mira, 29, who served as the athletic director of Archimedean Middle Conservatory and Archimedean Upper Conservatory, two associated Miami-Dade charter schools in West Kendall, was originally charged in mid-November. He evaded police and at the time told his relatives he'd rather die than be caught. He stood accused of molesting the 12-year-old three times between October and November. Mira was eventually arrested more than a month later.

Police now believe that even while he was on the run, he stayed in contact with the 17-year-old. According to CBS Miami, the girl begged police not to charge Mira because she thought she loved him. She also refused to believe he would have sex with the 12-year-old because he wouldn't "cheat" on her. Police believe Mira was manipulating her.

Mira has now admitted to the sexual assaults but won't face any jail time. He entered a plea deal February 9. He pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual assault on a minor and charges of sexual abuse. He will serve ten years of probation, be forced to register as a sex offender, and must hand in his teaching certification. He has also agreed to terms that prevent him from ever again supervising children. If he breaks the terms of his probation, he could face up to 40 years in prison.

Both girls' parents agreed to the terms of the deal to keep their daughters from testifying, but according to CBS Miami, both families say the girls have had to change schools and undergo counseling after the assaults.

Anyone remember Mary Kay Letourneau? She was a teacher that got jail time because she sexed up her lover who was underage., and got pregnant with his child. Oh yeah, the underage lover happened to be her student at the time. She and her former student are now husband and wife.

The prosecutor wrote this plea bargain while he was bent over the back of the couch with his pants down around his ankles.  If this is what Miami society allows for a sexual predator to F*** a 12 year old and get away with it, then you're all animals, no better than he. Just don't cry, moan, and bitch when he does it again.

Not defending this sentence, but the prosecutor is the 1 who offered this pleabargain which Paul Mira accepted & the judge agreed to this sentence.  It's possible the prosecutor did this because they figured if they went to trial, Paul Mira may have been acquitted by jury as his defense lawyer would try to put reasonable doubts & unsure how strong the proof was.  It's possible that Paul Mira may have been innocent but pleabargained because he feared he would be convicted of something he didn't do.  Assuming Paul Mira did what he's accused of, the prosecutor after reviewing the proof, hopefully talking with the victims, made this pleabargain. The case may not be so easy as the media reports it.

WTF?!?!?!?! I'm sorry but someone that preys on young children and brainwashing them should definitely go to jail. This guy got off too easily.

Have you ever known a registered sex offender to have it easy? I haven't. Jail time or not, he's still screwed.

"if he got no jail time and she did, that tells me that female sex offenders are more worse then male sex offenders"

Are you trying to say that that male sex offenders get lighter sentences than female ones? It's quite the opposite. Female sex offenders usually get much lighter sentences. In cases where two adults, male and female, are charged with doing the exact same thing to the exact same person, often at the exact same time, the male almost always gets a much more severe punishment. I threw "almost" in there because if i said always someone would go find one example and think they have disproved my entire argument.

also "Police believe Mira was manipulating her."Thats some fine police work, i would never have caught on to that one.

Natalie, you're bashing the prosecutor but if the proof against Paul Mira was weak, then a jury may acquit him. The prosecutor may have believed that Paul Mira did it but thought the evidence may have been weak.  If this is the case, then the prosecutor may have believed that this pleabargain is the best he or she could do.  Not every1 who is tried for a crime is convicted & sometimes a guilty person will be acquitted by a jury if the proof is weak.

That POS should consider anything less than the death penalty getting off easy.

Just like Casey Anthony was guilty but was acquitted of murder because the evidence was too weak to get her convicted.
