Tokyo Valentino: Neighbors Want Miami's Newest Gay Club Shut Down

It's not so much that neighbors in the Upper Eastside of Miami want the Tokyo Valentino closed simply because it's a gay club. In fact, they're more upset that it may not actually be quite such a proper gay club. They think the club, which sounds like it was named after an Asian drag queen obsessed with couture, is actually an adult entertainment business. Now, Open Media Miami's Sergio N. Candido reports the City of Miami has opened an investigation.

Tokyo Valentino is located at 8330 Biscayne Blvd., just a store front over from Don Bailey Flooring's infamous nude male centerfold-esque billboard, in fact. After paying a $10 cover charge and checking in, guests are allowed to boogie on the dance floor, shoot pool in the game room, or, uh, snuggle up for a good movie with a friend in one the lounge's private rooms. Unlike a traditional bath house, the rooms aren't rented out and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, but some residents are concerned that the place is basically a glorified bath house. The opposition claims that the club is selling adult videos and purposefully facilitating sexual encounters.

Owner Mike Morrison tells Open Media that he won't stop guests from bringing their own DVDs to watch in the rooms, and he's not going to say anything if anyone brings in something XXX. Though he denies he's running an adult business. Open Media says the place is "just like Jamboree, a gay lounge a few blocks away on Biscayne Boulevard."

Which might not be the best defense. If you're not familiar with the reputation of Jamboree we'll let Yelp reviewer Carlos P. fill you in:
And if you're feeling really adventurous, venture out to the backyard where it's so dark that you can't even see your hand in front of your face. What you will see is a lot of shadows that are humping, on their knees or walking around looking for a good time. Oh, and did I mention that if you keep an ear out, you will hear the romantic sounds of slurps and moans?
Not helping matters is the fact that the website of Pinky Productions, a company associated with the club's DJ Skittlz, currently states that Tokyo Valentino is "Miami's newest 'Underground' Swinger's Club" and "the place to be at on the weekends either with your lover or even just a friend." Oh, the things people put up on the internet.

The problem is that adult business are not allowed within 1000 feet of a school or residential areas, and Phyllis R. Miller Elementary School and several homes are close by.

So now the City of Miami has opened an investigation to determine if the club is breaking any zoning rules. The city has already cited Tokyo Valentino for operating an adult business on February 6, just weeks after its January 23 opening. The case will potentially end up before the city's zoning board.

Morrison, the club's owner, isn't deterred according to Open Media: "We took it to the attorney and he said: 'Let them take it to court, they are not going to win."

O ye great journalist - this statement "  adult business are not allowed within 1000 feet of a school or residential area "  Is that a county rule or a city rule? The school is located far north at 87th street - has to be over 1,000 feet away? The residential neighborhood? You mean the skid row apartment blocks on the west side of Biscayne behind the business?I'f they're breaking the rules, they shoudl adjust or be shut down. But I'm really curious if they fall within what is considered 1,000 feet of a school ( and the school, I belive is unincorporated Dade county, not the city of Miami? ) ...

Crazy, I bought a hutch there back when it was an antique showroom!

I drove by and thought it was just video jerking booths (which are a pretty crazy concept in the age of the internet).

I drive past that club every day and it bothers me to think of what is going on inside. This is a family community behind the street on both sides and we are trying to improve the area. We have a farmer's market on Saturdays, some lovely restaurants, and now a bath house. This needs to stop, Tokyo Valentino needs to close down and move somewhere sleazy - please watch this issue and make sure we remove this cancer from our neighborhood.

i'm a gay resident of Miami Shores area and i DO NOT want this kind of establishment in the area. PLEASE CLOSE THIS PLACE DOWN!!!!!!

this place MUST have to violate plenty of zoning codes and regulations. We are trying to bring up this neighboors withdecent places like EROS where you can find a great bar and lounge for a few hours.

I would HATE to imagine that biscayne bvld will trun out like Le Juene rd one time was...

PLEASE SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN!

"We took it to the attorney and he said: 'Let them take it to court, they are not going to win."

That is conflictory advice considering your attorney would love all those billable hours, regardless of whether or not you get shut down.

@Polincor  Family community? Please the gays out number everyone else now. Whatever is going on behind closed doors requiring an admission fee is none of your business. Hey...how about the Ferris wheel at an fair? The roller coaster at a park? The airplane bathroom? I wonder what goes on up there when there's a pantie-less slut in the picture and an unzipped horny guy? I'm so tired of these frigid, holier than thou stiffs judging the gay community. We just own up to having sex in public places, and don't sneak around pretending something we're not. I think you guys invented the Mile High Club since being out in public was taboo up until the 1990s.

Family community? This place is still crawling with hookers, crackheads, and homeless. Leave the gays alone. They will at least bring some civility to the area.

@Gay Miami Shores Resident  Have you driven down the street to Jamboree? What do you think might happen in the foliage behind Magnum and to the side of Eros. I can imagine the look on your face strolling down 82nd Street and catching a BJ being given in the bushes. I've seen it and just kept on walking. To each his own...I wouldn't risk getting arrested, but I'm not a judging hypocrit. Please...we're just keeping the sex away from the family hotels all up and down Biscayne. It's shocking at the number of expensive high rises sprouting up around Starlite East and the other seedy, sex motels along SW 8th Street. Just look the other way when it comes to a completely PRIVATE experience that is paid for and focus on much more urgent issues like bullying in schools and the alarming rate that many guys barely 25 years old are catching HIV. I'm surprised seeing the HIV status on many college age kids today.

Uhhh, isn't that why their lawyer wants the city to take it to court, where billable hours are usually logged extensively?
