I think the whole maternal "instinct" isn't it. that just leads moms who don't bond right away or are more of the "fun" one instead of the "nurturing" one to feel bad about themselves and doesn't give enough credit to the great dads out there. It's compassion not maternal instinct that would prevent most people from doing this. I don't have children and, therefore, don't feel any maternal feelings, but on a HUMAN level,female or male, you would not do this to another person or living being because it's cruel. These people obviously have no sense of compassion and seem like sociopaths because there is no way you can see you cause this kind of thing, know you can stop it, but keep going anyway.

Me either. Mine kicked in right away. It's my understanding that a woman's brain rewires itself during pregnancy. I always feel like in cases like these, the bitches brain just somehow fails to do so. I like to think that there's some real reason for it, other than there are just a lot of sick twisted bitches out there.

I get that. And I'm sure not growing up with a good example of how to parent is a factor in it too. And I totally get what you mean by the other small children thing. A few months ago, I had a bad tooth. It had just cracked in half (comes from the radiation.) Anyway, I was hurting pretty badly from it and was having trouble getting an appointment soon enough. The lady at my dentist's office suggested this dental clinic. You had to go in early, you couldn't set an appointment, just show up. And people got their spot on a first come, first serve basis. The kids were out of school that day, so I ended up getting a late start and then I got lost on the way there, so by the time I got there, I actually only made it just in time and I got the last spot. I was waiting there for like three hours when this family came in. They had a little boy with them who was clearly in pain. He was holding his jaw and crying out every few minutes. I thought he was going to be turned away, and decided that if he was, I would go up there and tell them to give him my spot. It turned out that there were doctors there who took appointments, and he actually had one, so no problem. But I was nearly brought to tears just seeing him in the kind of pain he was in (Poor kid was hurting so bad that I got my son to offer him his gameboy in hopes it would take his mind off his pain and when he did the boy just looked at him and started sobbing, it was awful!). This child that I had never met, would never see again, whose name I had never even learned moved me to want to suffer in his place. And I don't understand how anyone could feel differently, but I know that there are some out there who do and it just completely baffles me.

Mine kicked in during my first trimester. I think just knowing I was pregnant changed me and the way I felt and then came the surge of hormones. I still have it. Not nearly as strong as when you have little ones but I feel it for other small children, nieces, nephews, etc. I think the nurturing component really never goes away, if you are a real mother.

I think it has to be a combination of different things because if it were only one component to it, scientists could isolate it. Probably effed up brain wiring + a little effed up rearing by at least one effed parent.
