Miami-Dade Police Officer Punished for Using Patrol Car to Move Mattresses

Categories: News
miamimattresscar.jpg
Miami-Dade Police officer Sandra Lyles was just days away from retirement. All she had to do to make it out of the force quietly was keep a low profile. Instead, she was snapped by an angry citizen using her county-issued police car as an impromptu personal mattress transporter and has now been relieved of duty.

Some surely crabby viewer of Local10 saw Lyles in a Big Lots parking lot off of the Palmetto Expressway strapping the mattresses to the top of her car. Miami-Dade officers are allowed to use their patrol cars for personal use, but apparently strapping a mattress on top is a bit too far.

If this was the only smudge on Lyles' record we'd probably consider the uproar a little over-the-top, but according to Local10 her record is far from squeaky clean:
According to personal records, Lyles is not a model officer. In 1990, she was taken off the streets and assigned as a secretary and has been suspended twice for being in "preventable" crashes with her patrol car.

Records show that Lyles has been disciplined 19 times in her career, several involving conduct-related issues.

According to records in December of 2007, Lyles received discipline for conducting private business on the job and in 2003 she was reprimanded for "parking a marked vehicle police vehicle in a location designed for handicapped access."
So Miami-Dade cops, if you're going to transport a mattress using your car, make sure its one of those blow up kinds that you can put in your trunk.

OMG!!!!!!  I'm hoping that some of the "commentators" are still in school trying to learn English so they can pass it on to their kids and give them a better life through knowledge!  I've seen some bad spelling and use of grammar before, but damn!

Man In Black
Man In Black

I agree with you about the "bad spelling and use of grammar!"  Those with such posts are not doing the Officer any tribute.

If it is true that the Officer was permitted to use the patrol car for personal use I do not understand why she was terminated, unless such use caused damage to said patrol car and she reasonably should have known it would cause such damage.  I am a retired law enforcement officer with 36 years of experience.  There is usually a justification for allowing Officers to use their patrol cars for personal use.  One reason would be to show that law enforcement is present and another would be the Officer could respond if needed.  Had this Officer responded to an emergency call while off duty with mattresses atop her squad car would anyone protest, or would they commend the Officer for responding while off duty?

Meohmy

She wasn't terminated. Read for comprehension.

Wendi

She wasn't terminated but relieved of her duties. There is distinction for purposes of what benefits she will be entitled to.  The AP reports I have read indicate that she will be allowed to retire and that the incident is further being investigated (not that there is much to investigate).  The force would be in a difficult position not to allow her to retire, as she was allowed to go a sizable amount of her career breaking the rules--some far worse than this.  The force trusted her with a patrol vehicle depsite crashes, illegal parking, and other misconduct.  Her past misdeeds had been tolerated (she kept her job), so it is not that surprsing she would break the rules again a few days from retirement.

Man In Black
Man In Black

Hopefully you are correct and her employment was not terminated.  There are numerous news stories that state her employment has been terminated.  If these reports are wrong it would not be the first time the news got it wrong.  Thanks for the "Read for comprehension."  I suggest you read more than one article.

Wow there are post here that I have read, and boy are they mad. I have nothing to say about the officer, because I do not know her, but she was days from retiring she should have thought about it simply because this world is full of idiots that have nothing better to do than to video tape a police officer carrying a matress!

I am sure Sandra likes all the posting from her fellow officer, with gas at @almost $4,00 per gallon and budget cuts  its funny how stupid one person can be.

ETHICSThe science of human duty; the body of rules of duty drawn from this science; a particular system of principles and rules concerning duty, whether true or false; rules of practice in respect to a single class of human actions.  All police officers are taught this throughout their career.  This is about ethics which seems to be a reoccurring problem in this individual’s career.  It is wrong to bite the hand that feeds you by doing things that could put the public safety in jeopardy.  She would not have been able to take action period. Another example of quota hiring instead of the best and brightest candidates.  I am sure that officer Lyles thinks she is special because she is a cop and uses it every chance she gets . Why else would she park in a handicapped space ? 2 crashes where I work would be a defensive driving class and maybe termination . She is just riding the clock until retirement nothing more .

It is a safety hazard to drive with a mattress on the roof of your car.  Officer Lyle should be relieved of duty for sheer stupidity.

I have a dream.  I have a dream that one day you can drive on a Miami-Dade County expressway and not see mattresses on the roofs of cars tied with just a little bit of twine.

Amen.

Having driven on the highways of Dade county, I can attest to the amount of dangerous items, wheelbarrows, ladders, mattresses etc. This woman should have known better. Since she is a cop and apparently clueless she should lose her job.

Really!!! That's all you guys can come up with! Trashing an officer because of some stupid mattresses on her car! So How many lives has she saved. How many years has she been on the department protecting and serving her community. Some people have nothing else better to do and shame on you for putting her personal business out on the streets about how many times she has been reprimanded. It is all unnecessary and just dumb. And if they can use their patrol cars for personal use than why is this a problem.I'm sure there's not anything stating she can't put mattresses on her vehicle. To the angry, insensitive person who took the photo GET A FREAKIN LIFE!!!!!

First of all, I never said that I was in the Police Academy or ever attended and Law Enforcement Academy. Second, I only alluded to the words. In to speak frankly, I am probably old enough to be your parent. So stay in a childs place. Is this clear enough for you to understand.

Anyway, I though the comments were about the article listed above, on the Miami-Dade Police Officer been reprimanded for misuse of public trust not about defaming someone's moral character. The Officer in question is family in I am going to protect mines.

And who do you think are you Nancy Perez who work as the Miami Dade Police Commander so fast came across the water on an entertube on a banana boat. How did you get your position? Did you have to take the same test she took or did you sleep you way to the top in order to get your high position. Did you reprimand all those other crooked cops on the force? I strongly believe you have taken it very personal. It not because Sandra was carring mattresses on top of her Patrol Car while she was off duty. How many other Officers have being doing and carring things while off duty? If you going to reprimand one, how about reprimand all of them even the spanish ones too. I rather for Sandra to move mattresses on top of her Patrol car then for her to be a crooked cop like the some of them. In not just in Metro-Dade, but The City of Opa-Locka, Miami Beach and the City of Miami crooked cops killing people, raping people, taking drugs from know drugs dealers, taking personal property and making money for their own profits. And Sandra only done minder things opposes to thoses crooked crops you have and many different Police stations and you Nancy Perez are making a mockery out nothing because of one citizen (who supposing be angry at Sandra) and which, I think personally it was an inside job. Miami-Dade Police Officer Sandra Lyles was days from retirement".  Therefore, it was unfair, unjustly, and wrongful termiation of Ms. Lyles. Nancy Perez, misuse her power as Discrimination/Unfair Supervisory Practice/Harasment creating a Hostile working environment. And she probably is going up for relection this year who's to say. Let's look into Nancy Perez background to see if she's a real citizen to work in the state of Florida along with the so called angry citizen.  Sandra Protect and Serve in put her life on the line for 32 years and you, Nancy Perez is going to reprimand her for carring a mattresses...This a joke!!! I am quite sure that you have skeletons' in your closet. Because what goes around will come right back around in your face.  love your cuz in nashvilleWe are on your side

Let's not go rounds and sway off the issue at hand which is the Article. I must have got under some people skin with my comments, its shows evident that you have a narrow understanding of being a Law Enforcer. First, throwing pot shots at family members does not change the fact that Officer Lyles, dedicated 32 years of her life and public service for Dade County. It’s not fair for you people to sit up here to slander her name and make a mockery out of service. As far as my literary caliber, I think I can hold my own.  It will be beneficial for those of you, who want to take cheap shots at Officer Lyles family, choose another forum and I will be glad to accommodate with discussion.    As I have stated in prior posting, Officer Lyles comes from a rich cultivated history which I am a proud member thereof. Now if you would like to get philosophical we can go there. But if you step in something that you cannot handle, back off.

Wow now I have an idea of Sandra's background. No wonder the stupidity! Nashville must be nice!

Chevignon
Chevignon

Basically you do not have an idea of Sandra's Background. Yes, Nashville is nice. Now on your comment about her background, you are just an observer looking through the glass and commenting on things you do not have a clue about. Because her family tides are deep in you do not know who you are talking too. She have a lot of family across the world. So watch what you say are who you say it too. Beside the issue is not about her rationality, it about the time and service she put in to Metro-Dade Police Department as and they are trying to shaft Sandra out of dues that to legally do to Sandra. She have Serve, protect and place her life on the line for the cizitens of Dade County Florida and for that she is due all that is owe to her.

Now we can laugh and joke all night long, but you have to remember that Sandra's livelyhood and honor are at stake. It that's not funny trying too f*** someone out of their money. If you got the balls let them hang and try to say that kind of S*** to her in face and see how long you will have them. For you spanish speaking "Si usted tiene las bolas deje colgar y miraba caida. LOL

That's rite Cuz and I am in German that was crazy, but it not about the mattress it's about how they are viewing Sandra as if she Killed people and got caught. that's not what she did? Look at you all life who are posting comments what's in your background, that we can get angry about and post our comment on it.

And for Miniguis, and Sir Sausage you both have issue too write them down and make it known before it hit the news. Doral Police Department need to investigate a lot of you Officer, Liers, murders, rapist, abuser. How is that for just over an Mattress? A lot of you need to come Clean, some just didn't get caught. What a great Job you still have done Sandra while working as Metro Dade Police Officer. Sandra didn't do nothing wrong for them to relieved her of her Duty, it's not like she was a crooked cop. Miami Dade Police Dept. that Sandra work for 32 years or so was a Great Officer. They need more good Cops like Sandra. Because she moved a mattress in her Patrol Car while off Duty don't mean nothing.

Look at those other Officers that misuse their Badge for other Crooked stuff, and use their Police Car to pull women over and do things to them and then killed them and get away with murder.

And, how much did the angry citizen get out of it. Wowww..... That's ashame!

Sandra, put her life on the line for 32 years to protect and serve and you all took it for personal game to reprimanded her for putting a mattress on top of her patrol car. Woww..! What a Joke.32 years of Good Service Sandra God is with you

"Sandra didn't do nothing wrong".  This stuff cracks me up.  Illiteracy always lends plenty of credibility to any post.  :oD  Then, I love these common comments about "life on the line" and such things when the person freely chose to pursue the career, got the benefits, cashed the paycheck, etc..  After that, it all looks pretty even to me.  If the subject is government corruption, I think that's pretty much a runaway train at this point.

Let me rewrite it:

Sandra put her life on the line for 32 years BUT from behind a desk at the midway station in Doral. She should have been fired since the 90s. I work with her and the only thing I can tell you is that she was one of the biggest liabilties the dapartment had. The sorryest officer ever!

Ok, and why are you hiding behind your name and who are you to talk? If they wanted to let her go then yes I agree they should have, but gess what they didn't So she must have done something rite in the Department and was still a great Officer even tell this day. When was the last time they wrote Sandra up? Let it go and get over it. Wowww..It was just a matress and we as people some done worst then that and Officer, Doral. I can remember when they had a big bust an how they tried to cover that up in the late 80's early 90's. Even when my uncle a Police Officer himself was Kill by another Police Officer on 826 eastbound and they cover that up. That officer was still on the force and was let go. My Aunt was left as a widow while he contiunte to do a mess up job. Did you know that? Of course you probably did, if you know everything else.A lot of you Officers was and just out for yourselves, a least she did what she had to do and learned from it even when she was behind the desk. Sandra still did her job. That's a fact! Also, you mention that she was the biggest liability then why did they keey Sandra their?
