Trayvon Martin Shooting: Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho Says Failure To Investigate is "Cause For Outrage"

Count Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho's voice among those blasting the lack of an arrest in the shooting of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin.

An Orlando-area self-proclaimed neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman, killed the 17-year-old Miami Gardens native Martin, who attended Michael Krop Senior High. He claimed it was self-defense, but 911 tapes seem to contradict his story.

This afternoon, Carvalho issued an emotional statement calling on federal authorities to investigate the killing, and slamming the Sanford Police Department for its "failure" to "properly investigate such a death."

Here's Carvalho's full statement:

As Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, a father, and an American, I am heartbroken and deeply disturbed by the senseless and untimely death of one of my students, one of my children, Trayvon Martin.

Each year we lose far too many young people to illness and accidents, but the death of a child as the result of an inexplicable violent act is not only heartbreaking, it is cause for outrage. The apparent failure of authorities to properly investigate such a death is utterly unacceptable.

Trayvon was killed on February 26, 2012, and some twenty-four days later, no charges have been filed or arrests made. Our American justice system is one that assures that all citizens are equal in the eyes of the law and that evidence, not conjecture or supposition, is to drive criminal investigations.

I join my voice with those who, in pain and mourning, demand that no stone be left unturned as state and federal entities achieve what, apparently and unjustifiably, the Sanford Police Department has not--justice.

Can't get over listening to Trayvon on the 911 tape begging for his life for almost a full minute. Held at gunpoint. Staring down the barrel. About to get glocked. Then the sneering that must have come from Zimmerman when he finally decided he had heard enough of Trayvon's whimpering and just wanted Trayvon to finally shut up. It was cold-blooded first-degree premeditated murder. With the proof on those tapes how can anybody be arguing that it might have been self-defense?

We are not alone in our condemnation of this horrible act of violence against this innocent child.  The failure on the part of the Sanford Police Department to promptly and properly bring Zimmerman to justice has resulted in a massive outcry not only in America but in many parts of the world.  Miami Dade County School Superintendent's condemnation of the unlawful murder of one of his students is both welcome and appreciated.  NO JUSTICE...NO PEACE!!

Too bad the guy who shot him didn't do that. People like Donna are not the ones keeping racism alive. Naive and unconscious racist like you are. There is dead kid who had skittles and an ice tea. Perhaps you could feel some compassion rather than your cold clinical call for "facts".

there's that. then, i ask myself where would george zimmerman be if he was black and trayvon martin was white? george zimmerman claims that it was self defense, but what could this poor kid have possibly said or done that made zimmerman feel so threatened that he had to get out of his car, that he was following trayvon in, and shoot him in the chest? why did the police officer 'correct' a witness? why aren't the police doing anything?

This murder happened for one reason and that reason is his skin color.......The murderer had prior charges of Battery on a LEO, and that charge was expunged that is a very hard charge to have expunged IMO he is close to someone or working with the police department, He did not obey Official police orders to STOP following him!!!! Something good has to come out of this I believe in God and this young man did not die in vain. God be with his family during this tragedy!!!!!!

His exact charges in 2005 were:CR-RESISTING OFFICER WITH VIOLENCEBATTERY ON LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER

The charges were dropped (not expunged) for whatever reason.  You don't get 3rd degree felonies dismissed by "knowing" someone.  Odds are that the prosecution just didn't have enough evidence to get a case going.

I'm with him, but really, who cares what his opinion is?  Not news.

He's the top educator in the school district where the kid was a student. His opinion matters more than, say, Al Sharpton's.
