Miami Dad Makes His 7th Grade Son Stand on Street Corner With a Sign For Bad Grades

Last month, Riptide chronicled the world of Miami's professional sign wavers. It's a job Michael Bell Jr. is getting a taste of and may have to look forward to as an adult if he doesn't get his grades up.

Bell Jr.'s father, Michael Bell Sr., obviously, is making his son stand on a street corner during Spring Break with a sign letting the world know that the kid is currently failing three of his courses.

It's not the first time a Florida parent has devised such a punishment. Last year a Tampa mother made her high school-aged son wear a similar sign in public because of his 1.22 GPA.

Though, it appears to be the first time the punishment has sprung up locally. According to Local 10, Bell Jr. is now spending his spring break wearing the sign at North Kendall Drive and SW 107th Avenue. Bell Jr. is currently failing math, language arts and civics.

"He has been screwing up in school, behavior and academics, and right now I am trying to send a message to him," Bell Sr. tells Local 10. "Right now, this is the only thing I have left to try and reach him."

One side the sign reads, "Hey, I want to be a class clown, is it wrong?" The other side asks drivers to honk if they think three Fs are bad.

Both of Bell Jr.'s parents are supervising him and making sure he's safe during the nontraditional punishment.

I truly believe that parents should be involved in the educational development of their child. Now that these kids have legal rights on how they can be discipline, parents have to find other ways to get through to them. Just talking and taking things away from them is not enough. At time we have to go to reasonably extreme measure in order to let our childern know that what they are doing will not be tolerated. I commend this father for handling the situation the way he did, because half of the young men growing up in this country do not have a solid father figure or male role model.

does this work all the people who think the dad is doing a good thing?  Look at those who rule the socio economic food chain and or the academic ones and you will see liberal parenting.  I am not a liberal but I can tell you this, there is a reason why the military culls its grunts from the south.  Are you spitting out any scholars?  this man doesn't know squat about how to make this kid perform in school but he is making sure the kid will not do well in school.  I have a feeling he likes to tell the kid what a loser he is and the kid is looking for any chance at all to play.

hey how about sitting down with the kid and helping him with his homework!  Betcha ya can't.  Kids who play are smarter. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, kids who are physically disciplined have lower i.q., impulse problems (um like he cant quit being a class clown in school?) and the demographics with the strictest childrearing practices are the ones that most fill our jails.  I would rather see him be able to read and write.  I am surprised this man was not arrested.  But he is fostering a loser....

Nothing wrong with trying to keep your son from becoming a professional burger flipper.  Whatever works.  I bet he'll try to do better next time, unless he wants to spend all summer in summer school and walking around with another embarrassing sign in the hot Florida sun.

Humiliation works wonders, and can be a better form of discipline than beating your son up and leaving him a bloodied mess.

Punishment does work and its not always the fault of the parent. I have three kids and when they did something wrong they got punished as did I when I was growing up.
