Occupy Miami's Overtown Safehouse Raided by Dozens of Miami Police With Assault Rifles UPDATED

More than two dozen cops swarmed Occupy Miami's Overtown safehouse yesterday afternoon after responding to what appears to have been a bogus terrorism tip The raid was the second on Occupy Miami in the past six weeks. On January 31, Miami-Dade cops evicted protesters from Government Center. This time it was City of Miami police officers that arrived in SWAT vans and emerged with their assault rifles drawn.

"They were pointing guns at children!" says Ramy Mahmoud, one of three Occupy Miami members taken in for questioning and then released without charges. The Miami Police Department did not return a request for comment left last night. As soon as they do, we will update this post.

Update: Click through for New Times video of the raid's aftermath:

Here's Jake Katel's video report on the raid:

Mahmoud and other Occupy Miami members were preparing to travel downtown to protest the birthday of Chase Bank CEO Jaime Dimon when at least half a dozen police vehicles screeched to a halt in front of the building on NW Seventh Street.

A cop in a dress shirt and bullet-proof vest jumped out of an unmarked car, aimed his gun at them, and shouted, "Everyone on the ground," according to Occupy Miami members.

"I thought it was either a joke or he was robbing us," says an occupier who gave his name only as Cobra. "Then an ice-cream truck full of SWAT officers pulled up."

Nearly 30 cops -- many carrying assault rifles or shotguns -- spread out around the building, ordering people to the ground and patting them down for weapons.

"They said that they had gotten a tip that we had 'long guns' and were going to use them at our protest," Thomas Parisi says. "But we are a peaceful movement and told them that we had no intention of doing anything like that."

Occupy Miami members, who have been living at the building since they were evicted from Government Center, said the cops mistreated them.

"They stepped on our backs to see if we were packing guns," Parisi says. "They forced a 57-year-old diabetic woman onto the ground. And they pointed their guns at my wife."

Three occupiers were initially placed in handcuffs but were released at the scene. Cops then asked Mahmoud and two other Occupy Miami members to accompany them downtown for questioning. There they were kept in separate rooms and interviewed for a little more than an hour, he says.

"They were asking me questions like, 'Are you a Muslim?' and 'Do you love this country?'" Mahmoud says. "I said hell no, I don't love this country, and it's because of shit like this.

"They are calling us terrorists, but what I saw today was demons pointing guns at us," he adds. "They terrified us."

What you people need to understand that these people are not part of "Occupy Miami" they are part of "Occupy tha' Hood" and unless any of you live in Overtown and see what these so called protestors are doing you shouldnt comment. These people are 20-30 year old males living rent free, not working, doing drugs, selling drugs, and the crime rate has gone up. Overtown is an older city with a really bad rep which is ashame because its at a great location right next to downtown, 10 minutes away from the beach, grove, government center is right there, the American Airlines Arena is right there, bayside, clubs, its near the new hot spot Mary Brickell village but the City of Miami doesnt care and would much rather spend our tax dollars on another baseball stadium or shit for tourists. The city of Miami has to step it up. Ive lived in overtown for over 10 years and these bums living in "Peace City" are making overtown live up to its bad rep. 30 swat team members came into that building that has about 8 county violations, drugs and thugs and nobody got arrested?

Obvijously this has the GOOD SEAL OF APPROVAL OF CONGRESS, THE WHITE HOUSE, THE 1%, the CITY GOVERNMENT and all others who back this National "security state" version of "democracy."  It did not start with Obama...how many administrations ago? A lot of this is being done in the name of "national security and national interests" and we know what that is and who is paying them.

Americans have lived in a daze for decades. You could say they've lost the ability to tell the difference between reality and reality-based television.

All the while, people with power have tightened the noose inch by inch.

I'm very serious. I know of several Americans who helped train and finance Osama bin Laden.A little investigating. It wasn't that hard, actually? All right, let's see ... the first one is Reagan. That' R-E-A-G ... Hello? Hello?Under President Ronald Reagan America not only increased its involvement in the Middle East by supplying arms to both Iraq and Iran in their war against each other, but America stepped up its involvement in conflicts around the world, especially South America. In 1998 the CIA finally admitted to its involvement in drug trafficking in the United States after years of federal investigation by the Kerry Congressional Committee.  What the CIA admitted to was allowing cocaine trafficking to take place by Contras who were being supported by the CIA, using facilities and resources supplied by the US government, and preventing investigation into these activities by other agencies. This was done because funds for the support of militant groups in South America had been withdrawn by Congress so the CIA allowed the Contras to engage in the drug trade in the United States in order to make money to fund their military operations. If you are wondering why this was not covered more widely in the news during the Clinton Administration it may be because Arkansas was one of the major trafficking centers for the operations

I'll bet the "bogus tip" came from themselves...

Well the cat's out of the bag people. I recommend that every god-fearing white christian d-bagger call in bogus terror/weapons/drug threats related to OWS/FOP/UAW protests to local law enforcement.

And not to worry, if no one calls it in (d-baggers won't even pick a phone unless dick armey's paying for the call) the cops or DHS can just call in the bogus threat to each other or themselves. To each other is probably the best way to go as far as appearances and fourth wall of the security theater considerations.

It's clearly an effective tactic as far as denying citizens their rights and intimidating tax paying voters at the behest of the owners of america. (Kochs/ADM/BOA/DHS etc etc...

Then me and my crack team of actual bad guys can hit three banks in one hour while the cops and SWATs chase, detain/arrest and question the social justice advocates.

It's basically the plot of Die Hard 3 but I'm convinced that it could work considering that all the cops have been trained to think their job-description is "counter-terrorist....like Jack Bauer!"

It's irresistable for them at this point. Just yell "terrorism!" and you could fucking steal city hall.

The actual line when MacGruber catches the candy bar thief is "Look around! All the cops are into somethin' You could steal city hall!"

I'm all for the Occupy movement, but I do think occupying to protest a "birthday" is rather ridiculous. I get the idea behind it, but we need to occupy in protest of what's actually going on, rather than birthdays of CEOs of organizations with money. We need to be direct. Btw, make sure you spread the word of May Day General Strike. A global strike on May 1st 5 am - May 2nd 4:30 am. No one goes to work. No one goes to school. No one goes shopping. Go out to the streets and protest. Demand your rights. Demand freedom. Demand to be part of the law making process. Demand elected officials to be held accountable for their actions. We need to spread this as fast as possible to make the strike have the greatest impact. The 1% cannot stand against the 99% united.

miami is on for the general strike.this was, however, a national event against dimon that took place as people such as the "chase 5" in seattle are going to trial for daring to plot to stop bank crimes, so was a good event...miami should've planned ahead though.

Does anybody still wonder WHO owns the police? It's no longer protect and serve us. It's protect and serve THEM.

Occupiers have been arrested for ANY reason they can think of. There is no LAW or JUSTICE anymore. We live in a police state. What are they afraid of? The truth?

BTW Am sure the "tip" was a lie. An excuse to do a police "exercise" with their new toys and procedures -- while protecting the banksters. The REAL criminals in our midst.

That's some dumbass shit. I don't see how a fake bomb threat is violent - people use them to get out of class and work all the time. I have heard of dozens and dozens of cases where the perpetrators were never identified. Stop harassing people for proposing legitimate ideas and tactics on the basis of some moral superiority you presume yourself to have.

how about a tip that the execs are planning a terrorist attack  (just as believable as a group peacefull [for over a year] protesters doing the same)... with no evidence to boot.   Except they'd not react because they'd know it's bogus.  Double standard much?  The appropriate response would be to have a police presence at the protest sight to maintain order, not an unsubstantiated swat raid.
