University of Miami Football Team Advertising For "Any Student That Is At Least 6'1 And 230+ Pounds"

Is this a sign of a University of Miami football apocalypse? The Hurricanes are are posting fliers around the school Wellness Center, asking "any student that is at least 6'1 and 230+ pounds" to contact the team about becoming offensive linemen.

We gotta say, this does not strike us as Division-1 behavior.

This photo was first posted on the Facebook page for The U, Rakontur's documentary about the team.

Hurricanes fans-- already battered by Ponzi schemer Nevin Shapiro's explosive tales of sex parties and bribes, and the team's very mediocre 2011-- responded like Chicken Little.

A smattering of responses:

Oh how the mighty have fallen. lol Good luck with this.
‎?.....what happened to us! this is embarrising take it down!!
This has to be a fuckin joke!!! SMH!!
This is horrible

This one, by an older pudgy man, has a nice tinge of optimism:

I have the 230 lbs locked. Now if I can only grow another four inches...

The flier is definitely real. "We are in the market for some walk on prospects," emailed Matthew Applebaum, the video assistant whose email address is listed on the flier. He seemed a bit rankled when I told him this was how my school filled its football team-- and I went to a small Quaker school in Indiana. His reply:

We are not looking to fill our team. We are just trying to find a couple of walk on prospects and specifically offensive lineman. If we did not put size qualifications we would get the wrong kind of responses. We are not expecting or banking on finding a great gem necessarily, as much as we are hoping to find maybe one kid that has the right size and can help our program.

Tom Deahn, UM's director of football operations, also insisted that recruiting by fliers does not mean UM doom. "We used to do that at Maryland and Temple," Deahn told me. "We're just trying to find linemen walk-ons. You get all the skilled guys the traditional way, and you fill your other needs this way."

In fact, says Deahn, this just shows how head coach Al Golden-- who succeeded Randy Shannon in December 2010-- is thinking outside the box.

"They never really worked to hard for their walk-ons," says Deahn of Shannon's regime. "Coach Golden's philosophy is you're only as good as your worst guy. If you don't have enough big bodies, you've got a problem."

Just be glad you're NOT PITT! They would be glad to have 5'4 145 lb linepeople. We have High School teams that are better than PITT.

Amazing write-up! This could aid plenty of people find out more about this particular issue. Are you keen to integrate video clips coupled with these? It would absolutely help out. Your conclusion was spot on and thanks to you; I probably won’t have to describe everything to my pals. I can simply direct them here!

Perspective:  Miami gave up 19 sacks last year, FSU gave up 41. FSU threw the ball 383 times to Miami's 339.  FSU was sacked on 10% of their attempts compared to Miami's 5%.  E.J. Manuel is way bigger and more mobile than Jacory Harris.  Yet somehow Miami has O-line problems and FSU doesn't.  Ok.

"they never really worked to hard.... " Great copy writing/editing, fellows. Apparently, you know about as much grammar/spelling as you do about college football.

A football program needs a scout team.

The author should've said "does not strike us as BIG STATE Division-1 behavior". But Miami's a small (expensive) private school and that means the walk-on pool is much smaller and as a result the walk-on program amounts to just about nothing.

Golden, more specifically his football adminstrative offices, are trying what they can to build the walk-on program. (i.e. offering preferred walk-ons, signs on campus and even to some extent the open practice to students)

However, even with increased effort on the part of Golden and Co, the fact remains that Miami's limited and will never have the walk-on programs of the BIG STATE programs until it has the same student body. By the way, FSU has walk-ons, but because their student body is almost 4 TIMES the amount of Miami's, they don't have to advertise,  due to the fact that they get enough kids just out of pure curiosity.  I know the author has little to no actual experience with a college football program, but all the smaller private schools advertise their walk on programs(Notre Dame, Stanford, etc.)

Wow..... This is sad!!!!! If FSU was doing this I would be extremely embarrased!

A)     6’1” 230 might be O-line stats in Tallahassee, but not even close to big enough for a UM O-linemanB)      Come on, UM will never have a problem recruiting big bodies.C)      UM is a small school, no O-lineman size people walk around unnoticed.  So if they wanted to find someone from the student pop they wouldn’t need to put an open invite they could go ask him.D)     Looks like something some FIU guy posted on the wallE)      Clearly the New Times have a team of monkeys workin round the clockF)      http://www.theufootball.com/ is the place to follow Canes football since you clearly, and with good reason, want to follow the canes and here’s the info on the current O-line for 2012: No. Name Pos. never ending ways to knock Randy Shannon.  He didn't treat the walk ons great? It's a private institution, true walk ons aren't going to as numerous.  The ones that may be able to help usually are the ones that are on track scholarship.

its a miracle the team won 9 games a couple years ago based on how inept the coaching was and how lacking the roster was - since a majority of that roster was on the team this past year.

This is how they got Jimmy Graham, Carlos Huerta and Santana Moss. Don't be so stupid as to not realize there is talent under rocks and in the bushes if you shake them.

I fit all the size qualifications. But I'd be interested in hearing more details about the bribes and the sex parties before I sign up.

Hey pgh - stop with badmothing Pitt, and thereby my favorite city in America whose name the school so proudly bears. The City of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh are of the highest caliber.  The "U" and Pitt suffer some of the same problems real cities do in competing with pro sports and the many other alternative attractions that take up their residents' time.  Unlike people in Trailerhassee, who spend most of their free time squirle hunting (and, as a So. FL resident, I'll never appreciate why our forefathers would have ever designated such an awful place to be the location of the state capital), and people in Painesville, who obviously suffer from an obvious lack of dental care, as demonstrated  by the empidemic of bad breath and rotten teeth that is so apparent in that nasty little inland sweltering town they call a city or town - - (why the hell would anyone want to live in that despicable area?  Though I guess it would be a great destination for a newly licensed dentist).

lets see fsu 3 years in a row top 3 recruiting classes beat miami last several years beat uf last 2 i think fsu is heading the right direction , while its very apparent our canes are heading to a major ncca probation problem. lets wake up and admit our problems, renegade boosters players repeatly in trouble the ride over the next 3 to 5 years is going to be a problem. it to bad our fan base as small as it is becoming based on attendance figues dose not want to admit ,we got problems, maybe bigger than we want admit. facing the problem is a first step to recovery of the problem.

I'm pretty sure USC would disagree with that. I don't think they're asking anyone to walk on.

Jimmy Graham was never recruited for football, not ever and Moss was not expected to be a football contributor, he was considered to small. that would be like saying LSU had their eye's on Shaq. Sometimes a great player stumbles into you lap. Look at Sam Shields, considered a bust as a receiver ends up being an NFL star after 1 season as a CB. Leave no stone unturned.
